thanks so much for the clear informative accurate information.
I myself also grow and I do sell Unusual Fig Trees in the UK.I own a 25 acre Fig Farm in Portugal with 2,000 Fig Trees.
Do email me with your requests, I can ship to the States.The trees are under 2kgs.in weight for shipping.,usually about 2 years old and well formed.Now the Fig Trees are without leaves.So now is the time to buy and plant.......
these are brown turkey or white kadota figs in the dvd. It depends on variety as well as growing conditions and water. the 2 largest we have in kona are deanna and a Japanese variety called masui dolphin which looks the same as brown turley - -only larger!
@HawaiiFruit White Kadota are green, I think they're Brown Turkey. WK are very delicious... Its like honey on the inside.. You're right, they wont ripen if you let them sit, but the ficin in them wont burn your tongue. Heat and humidity will ripen them a bit in my experience.
@exa0777 That'll take some time to do. I would suggest a good prune, to limit the number of branches that will set fruit to begin with. I got of all the branches I couldn't reach or bend in such a way that I might reach the fruit without the use of a ladder. The fig tree can take a "beating". I gave mine one a couple of years ago and this year I couldn't eat them or give them away fast enough before they spoiled. The size will ultimately depend on the variety, but this procedure is sure to help.
i've never germinated the seeds form the dry greek figs. Love to eat them though..
i would try to get them started on a damp paper towel and after a week stick it all in a pot. I would also try some direct in a pot. Still, depending on where you are it might be a lot easier to get a cutting or tree from home depot. There is no way to know for sure if the ones from greece will work these days since the xray and security even for freight is much tougher than it used to be.
Thanks for the awesome video. I planted a fig tree here in Oregon last year, and I'm really looking forward to having fresh figs. Now I know how to pick them.
The woman interviewed was very clear, very poised. An interesting video. I didn't realize there were different types of figs. Though I haven't enjoyed figs in the past, this video makes me think I should give them another try.
my favorite: black mission fig

@exa0777 How overgrown is your tree? If the tree sets too many fruit, they will inevitably be smaller.

@Teorispa
