My only concern is that the cost of this system is as much as the gavin itself! Also, it would be far better if they included more barrels, or a rapid reload capability, because after firing those two shots, it appears as if the crew will need to get out of their vehicle and manually reload the iron fist! That will be a problem in swarm RPG attacks. But don't worry, this is an amazing first step, and in a few years, linear advances/upgrades will boost its perfomance even higher!
RPGs are soo outdated there is no point in making this kind of technology to defend against technology as old as the RPG, what about the stinger and other much deadlier anti material weapons? , the only vehicles that would really need protection like this are lightly armoured vehicle.
RPGs are not out-dated; we are overmatched by their HE shock action created by their numbers; we need our own reusable RPGs at squad-level and vehicle defenses.
This is still in R&D. This is like Trophy 2, except a smaller version since this can fit on humvees or at least that's the claim. In the real world, Israel didn't put Trophy on their own vehicles when they went into Lebanon last time even when they had time to do so. They probably had sticker shock at the $300,000 per trophy unit, until they saw all their burning tanks. This system may have to be turned off if civilians or friendly troops are in the area.
trophy is now being installed on all the merkava 4 (maybe 3 also, im not sure, that will cost alot). and the iron fist is being installed on the namer ACV - maybe later on other vehicles.
One of my co-workers got to visit a test range about a year ago. Without going into the classified stuff he said that actually seeing "Iron Fist" and "Trophy" systems with your own eyes is almost like watching a magic act. It's truly UNBELIEVABLE!!
I guess being surrounded by angry psycopaths (under the guise of "religion") makes intelligent people even smarter...
I don't care how frangible or combustible the interceptor is.. that thing is going to give the commander a serious headache if he's unbuttoned and through the cupola when it launches.
Beats being killed. Button-up. Use remote weapon systems or small turrets or no turrets (STUG format). We need LIGHT tanks that can traverse closed terrain and air air-transportable. APS is necessary to protect without heavy armor that would ruin mobility.
The only problem that I see with this would be if it was pitted against and A-10.Not that it's likely, But ther is almost nothing that can stop 100 30 mm HE rounds from hitting an armored vehicle. But it is VERY UNLIKELY to happen.
The point is to first deny the air space for A-10/SU-25 type CAS attack planes to operate with your own hip-pocket FINAB air force. Next, your High-Tech Light Mech Infantry in M113 Gavins is dispersed and IR/visually camouflaged so any A-10/SU-25 "leakers" will not have easy targets, and of course some Gavin with air defense weapons...
What is an elusive concept to some people is EVERYONE MUST WORK TOGETHER as opposed to pretending one System/Branch does all the work and the rest are vestigal.
war getting complicated, now theres gonna be inventions how to defeat the iron fist and such , but its pretty cool were almost in the future xD vehicles practicly having a shield
Hey, they got George Takei (Sulu from Star Trek) to do the narration.
On a serious note, can this be set to automatically aim the machine gun turret to fire at the point of origin? So killing the RPG-troop before he knows he failed. Its one thing to survive the RPG, but IMO, deterrence can be more effective than any defense.
Maybe they should also put a machine gun on it, so that they know that anyone who fires at the vehicle will instantly be shot....thus the deterrence and the protection. Even if its out of defensive missiles you still don't want to be the one firing at the thing....
Hmm, I didn't know western armies didn't have such systems until now. It's actually a pretty old technology, fist variants were created in USSR in late seventies ("Drozd") followed by Arena in 1993.
"I was a 19D Scout for 11 years, the first six on 113s, then the piece of s**t Brads. For Scouts, it couldn't get worse than the Bradley....too big, too heavy, too loud, too complex, and too slow to keep up with the M1s it's supposed to support. A 113A3 runs rings around it, the only advantage a Brad has is firepower, but if you're a bigger target than a tank without the armor to take hits like a tank, a Brad's firepower doesn't mean a thing."
Still, I'm not to convinced it can stop a large-bore APFSDS as claimed --- HEAT warheads may be sensitive and delicate, but an APFSDS flechette is not.
Armor-Piercing, Fin-Stabilized Discarding Sabot = a depleted uranium or tungsten dart that is very, very hard that when it leaves the barrel pieces surrounding it to make it act like a large tank round fly off so it speeds up to a phenomenal mile-a-second rate
Thank you im very interested in such military information specially after the 2006 war in lebanon and hizbala ysing some high tech Anti-Tank missles and projectiles some made in USA and some in Russia, what would be an example of an APFSDS shell or rocket or what ever its called, thanks
the Abrams Tank is unstoppable now

i'd still prefer AMAP ADS
doesn't rely on a turret turned- , and a projectile launched toward the target
-> faster interception and also simultaneous interception of multiple threats if necessary
also it has no moving parts and more discharges available before needing a reload

That remains to be seen in honest tests & evals.

@anamu7tram ARENA costs 300k
iron fist costs 100k
aena 70%-90% chance of hitting friendlly troops
iron fist less then 1%

no, don't believe it, tank rounds are too fast, it can't catch them... iron fist can only catch "slow moving" object like RPGs

The issue I see with this over heavier APS, is reloading. It appears that it can only shoot twice before running out of ammo.
slushypuppies 3 years ago 2
It is easily reloaded and saving your life twice is more than enough.

Drozd had only 60 degree arc this has 360 that sstem was ahed of its time i think now adays it makes sense with the improved electronics.
