Un chanteuse qui joue la comédie ou une comédienne qui chante ??? en tous cas, ce qui est sûr, c'est les barrières tombent et que les contraintes n'en sont plus, mettre natalie dessay en scène doit être un vrai plaisir ...
some of the best operatic staging i've ever seen groundbreaking, creative and inspiring plus to have such a great artist like natalie dessay-wow what more can you ask for!
@nycnation Said like someone with that name: A wonderful spokesman for the greatest city on earth about one of the most marvelous performances of my life time. Thank you.
Wow, this is the most funny (and creepy, I must say) production I've seen. I don't understand how she can sing as well as always while moving like that. She's definitely the best in this role!
omg I've done this aria, and it is NOT easy. She's amazing! She make it almost look effortless, and the parts that require effort, she uses to make her doll character look more like a spaz. lol I love this! Natalie Dessay is my new hero! :D
What are some you talking about? she not only executes the aria on pictch to might I add... the acting is very well.....and the audience really enjoys it as you can hear... and after all thats what we're here for...
the oversized dolls swaying from foot-to-foot in the background are REALLY creepy - there is such a thing as avante garde and then there is just needlessly bizarre staging ... this production has really tipped off the scales into the latter ...
This staging is sheer genius. The fantastic and bizarre aspects are completely in keeping with the writing of ETA Hoffman, from which this opera is derived.
Dolls and eyes are some of striking similarities with the wonderful film on the Tales of 1951 with Rounseville and Moira Shearer. While the recent production may be a cute and clever one, it still goes far afield from the believability of the poet falling in love with a doll-woman and not a nasty, screechy Shirley Temple.
the point of olympia is the contrast between antonia, giulietta, and the 'magic' doll that he falls in love with! i think this is played and staged unbelievably beautifully!

It's much less cutsy-pie, listening and not distracted by the visuals. Then one becomes aware of quite a bit of flatness, in other words, frequently being slightly under pitch, not always together with the orchestra, taking rhythmical liberties for convenience and not for the music's sake and above all the ubiquitous aggressiveness of the sound itself.

More like belly-flopping onto the notes, somewhere around the pitch, the oscillation a little higher and a little lower than what it should be--utterly different from what Callas talked about (film here on youtube) about the absolute need to center the tones, otherwise it is not bel canto, or beautiful singing.
the problem is because it was in a big coliseum in Orange in the south of France, I try in french is simple lol... Les "problemes" de justesse sont la parce que c'est en plain air en ete avec le mistral, en tout cas: Natalie!! Chapeau!!! One of the best singers-actresses we have!!!!
Brava! Just Amazing...A Doll! A truly gifted singer, keep reaching those high notes and making the audience believe...Love you so much!:) Come to San Diego Opera in 2009!
her ornamentations on this song are legend, and mostly started by her. and all of the different ones she's been popular for using are put in the coloratura arias for soprano book... pretty friggin awesome.
Now that I know what this scene is about, I think it might have been better to dress her more maturely, since Hoffmann is supposed to be attracted to her. But she is easily the best singer of this aria!
I believe the attraction wasn't so much physical, as it was more like the little mermaid... he heard a beautiful voice, and he loved it, and had to have it for his own.
Canto superlativo...
I did this opera when I was 16 and I am obsessed with it and I have to say that her interpretation of this aria is FLAWLESS. I want to have her babies.
E' un genio chi ha progettato questa scenografia! E' davvero un genio!!! Che dire della Dessay? E' semplicemente la più stupenda Olympia che sia mai esistita! Grazie Naty!
I have to say. I'm not really a fan of her voice but I like her interpretation of this aria. It's better than all of the other videos of her singing this aria on here.

La chanson d'Olympia! Ah!
Tout ce qui chante et résonne
Et soupire, tour à tour, ,
Emeut son coeur qui frissonne d'amour!
Ah! Voilà la chanson mignonne

The vocal music of the 19th century sounds best with this technique. Otherwise, it is not "can-belto" either.
