@CelineChanteuse, totally agree, mariah is still better and what's most impressive is that she's a contralto whereas lea is a mezzo. Mariah has impeccable technique because it's very impressive for a contralto to belt a g5 whereas it isn't as much for a mezzo(lea). But lea is still amazing, vis a vis her contemporary rivals for that matter :).
@rfvmarques12 The song is Don't Rain On My Parade from the episode Sectionals in season one. It was originally sung by Barbra Streisand in the play and film version of Funny Girl :)
Reach super high notes does not mean to be a super great singer (Mariah reaches those notes in whistle and there's no way she can belt an A5 and make it sounds awesome as Lea)!!
@CodyRawlukTV 5 octaves? I guess if the lowest note is very low then I guess maybe but Mariah has a 5 octave range and can go up to a D7 if not higher... I don't think Lea can go THAT high... not that I live Mariah... just saying.
@Gleek1able I like Taylor's music but she does not have the voice, dramatics, and interpretive skills to be eponine. But I will always have lea salonga as the best eponine
well guys, you really don't know how her range is.. she showed us that she also a soprano in the past Glee episode.. she's unbelievable.. she can hit really high notes :) she really does have a once in a generation voice. and she's better than Demi Lovato.. :)
@teototallyspie She hits notes in the fifth octave but her voice doesn't cover 5 OCTAVES. If her range was from A1-A5, then yes, she'd have 5 octaves. Her voice only (as far as we currently know) covers only 2.3 octaves. She doesn't even cover the entire fifth octave.
i cant believe she sung "my man" live, its a real hard song to sing!!! she is so talented but beside her amazing voice, she has the personality, her voice is so touching and she is so great actress and sweet funny and kind woman, that´s why i love her!!! i love rachel she is the best in there! and stop talking about barbra ! lea is only 25 we dont know what will she be on future, she doesnt need to be barbra because she is amazing as she is!
@MrBrawler92 The first one is from the Musicares performane where she performed it in front of Barbra Streisand. The clear one is from a performance at Feinstein's before she was on Glee.
She did an A5 on a guest appearance on the Cleveland show. I think it was just a pretty strong head voice note, but I guess some people would classify it as a mixed note. Want the link?
@123buffylover She's got talent but no way... Barbra Streisand's voice at it's prime was truly incomparable... no singer can beat that voice, no singer.
@ManOfBamboo Ok then, whose voice is? Because I can't think of anyone that comes even close. Listen to the Main Event by Streisand... better with headphones... and tell me who has a more clear, smooth and powerful voice than her... just one example
@ManOfBamboo You have got to be kidding me! Literally kidding me! I'd say the second after Barbra is Whitney.... I'm guessing that you're a person who isn't a big enough fan of Barbra that you haven't heard ALL her work?I have! I'm not talking about Evergreen or the Way we Were..... I'm sorry.....I actually really like Whitney but I'm being serious... none of the singers you mentioned come even close. Did you listen to the Main Event? Try Since I felt For You... no one has a vibrato like her!
@stevesg92 Actually, I am NOT "literally kidding" you. You asked me to name a voice more powerful than that of Barbra's; already, I can name Mahalia Jackson, Shirley Bassey, and Whitney. You asked me to name a voice clearer and smoother than Barbra's --- Billie/Dionne/Ella all had voices as clear, smooth, and soft as Barbra's. Oh, and please refrain from questioning how much of a Barbra fan I am. I love her --- she's not my FAVOURITE singer ever, but I do love her. Barbra is NOT insuperable. :)
@ManOfBamboo Jackson.... raspy... Bassey... has the classic power of a black singer and indeed is a powerhouse... in 1970 Barbra Streisand's, which in most people's opinions was its prime was so powerful that it sounded at times like she was black and yet her voice was as crystal clear as a brilliant diamond.
@stevesg92 Mahalia (who is widely considered to be the greatest, most amazing gospel singer that ever lived) having a raspy effect in her vocals does not constitute inferior vocal power to that of Barbra. At all. Are you really trying to say that any white singer that possesses powerful vocals automatically sounds black by default? Dude, I hate to sound rude, but that sounds stupid. Nobody ever thought that Barbra was black, either.
@ManOfBamboo I didn't mean that literally. I just meant to say that at times ( Butterfly album) Streisand sounded almost like a black woman singing because black women usually have a characteristic sound to their voice and it really reminded me of that in certain songs.
@ManOfBamboo Plus... she is the greatest in my opinion because she is a blend of both great vocal power and softness and high range.... yes Bassey's voice is more powerful, you're right.
@stevesg92 Barbra is not the first singer in music history to possess vocal power or a big vocal range. She ain't the last singer to have all of those things either.
@ralphromeoRR023 Billie Holiday was one of the greatest singers of the 20th century, vocal range is not the sole purpose of a vocalist. Aretha Franklin obviously comes first in any list of great female singers in music history, I also like Mariah and Whitney's voices better than anybody --- IMO, Mariah and Whitney have the top two most beautiful female vocal tones of all time.
@stevesg92 and before you attack me with your opinions please note perfect Barbra as every singer isn't the perfect vocalist and does have bad qualities as well as amazing.
@Gleek1able I didn't say she was "perfect" and I realize you can't use a superlative like " she's the best or greatest" you have to say "one of the greatest" but she's right up there if you had to list the best and they would all be equals.
@ccishot564 Which? I'd say the only one that could've been Amber's was 11:15 but Lea was singing the same note. And the F#5's on "And it feels like HOME!" aren't Amber because her mouth wasn't even moving. And thank you so much :) I agree, she has one of the best A5's Ive ever heard.
