You don't get much better sung Handel than Inger Dam Jensen's.I want to buy this production on DVD,so am going through YouTube t o see how I like it(as it is a modern production)I think I am getting used to it now.I wonder when someone will show this production to David McVicar.to prove that this is a DRAMATIC opera, and NOT a fairground sideshow/cabaret as he turned it into at Glyndebourne?
@MrSwifts31 THANK YOU!! I was disgusted and distrubed by the glyndebourne version. fairground is an understatement. every scene made me uncomfortable and then I turned it off. half way through act I.
Bald or not, her voice is A+, and she does a phenomenal job. It's such a hard aria to sing, despite seeming slow and easy. Handel's arias are like Mozart's: close to impossible, and none but the best succeed.
@cantanteporsiempre Cleopatra queen of Ancient Egypt like all Pharaos used to shave their heads, they could wear different wigs, crowns....It was a widespread custom for also reasons of hygiene.
She's not the tallest of women - and she's on her knees with "no" hair - on the side of a huge empty stage, singen a very minimalistically instrumented aria.
gorgeous voice! And historical accuracy aside (re. the wig and loss of it) why do so many opera directors and designers go out of their way to make ugly-looking productions? Ugly costumes difficult to sing in; bare, boring sets... sometimes I think they are jealous of the singers and want to make them as uncomfortable as possible.
i am in tears! Gorgeous! It is so punk rock! LOVE IT!!!! Love the costumes, the set! She is to be studied! Her voice is so in the pocket! Thanks for posting this version!
I believe one of the best version of this aria on YouTube, if not the best... She has an incredibly beautiful vocal colour together with her good vocal control. To bad she doesn't perform as often, especially here in the states.
Piangero la sorte mia, si crudele e tanto ria, finche vita in petto avro. Ma poi morta d'ogn'intorno il tiranno e notte e giorno fatta spettro agitero
Isn't it beautiful. I must admit that I almost wept when I watched this for the first time. It's a beautiful version. You should get a hold of Dame Joan Sutherland's version. It's pure perfection. She holds a note toward the end that drags every last breathe from your lungs.
when i hear something this perfect - i always want to hear the version they started with... to see the progression of how the coachings helped her develop this version - freaking amazing
I wonder how many times she thought "why the hell did the director make me do/wear this?" over the course of one performance. Her voice is absolutely stunning in this aria.
Actually singers don't think that way too much, except a little while putting on the costume and seeing it in the mirror. Once it's on and the singer is on stage, don't forget, there is no mirror there. It's just like one of the most recent rehearsals, only better; with an audience.
On the other hand, have you seen "Tu la mia stella sei (Giulio Cesare) - Inger Dam-Jensen" yet? I believe same production (copy & paste) what a contrast! Absolutely stunning and so is the performance. SEE IT!
Perhaps, because according to historical sources Cleopatra was not beautiful at all (just charming and erotically active)... Otherwise, I don't know I haven't seen this interpritation of 'GC' yet.
Actually its because (when she is singing this aria) she has been defeated by Tolomeo and his army. Before this aria, Tolomeo sings "Domero la tua fierezza" (translated: I will tame you of your pride.") So this is what Tolomeo did to bring her down and humiliate her.
People- People. This is the best perfomance of Caesar ever. From Copenhagen 2 yeas ago. I watched it 4 times. AWESOME!!! If Inger sings good, then you should hear Tuva and Scholl...
This is the perfect example of a singer not yet known as a star but equally or even more musical and moving with a beautiful voice and technique. Thank you so much for posting this video and to open to a large public the art of Inger Dam-Jensen !!!!!
It says "Inger Dam-Jensen" if you read on top. at the right, it says "about this video", you can alwasy get some information there, sometimes less, sometimes more. Good luck with future videos.
Tra le versioni presenti su Youtube, di gran lunga la più emozionante per portamento, intonazione e sprezzatura. Meravigliosa.

Why bold??? is it her condition of slave? or it´s has to be with the production?

Must have been horrible for Palle (Achilla) to be lying there through the course of 3 arias and recitatives.

Great singing but such a horrible production! What is going on? I can barely watch it. Such a shame!
sopera123 3 years ago
What is going on is that Tolomeo has stripped her of her dignity and removed her wig.

i dont think so....close up you can see distinct skin differences, and it wrinkles way too much to be her own skin.

Beautiful! For those who have already got the DVD with this version, is the libretto included?
QueenOfShemakh 4 years ago
Libretto not included, only a synopsis of the plot.
I'm gonna try to upload some of the best arias, but then, I could post the whole thing.
Dam-Jensen is perfect in this role.
She has hair until she's let down by Tolomeo....
