BMW making wierd noise, pinging at topend, HELP

Def. a valve train issue. I would say stuck or collapsed lifter. Def. top end tho.

I have an e38, 98, and that noised happened to my car one time. The first time i heard it was because it was overheating, the coolent container had broken, causing all of the coolant to come out. i didn't notice that until the temperature went to red. the clapping noise that sounds idle and then when you rev to it makes the sound that my car made when it was hot. After fixing it, the car was good. - but the metal grinding noise...that i dont know

its happening to my e21 323i -_- right after i changed the water pump on it my self.

any ideas? ps to all the people saying valve lifters, how hard are they to change?

I'd check for loose spark plugs plugs first. You can hear the vanos chain ratle and some valve clapping in the background too. How's the driveability, any flat spots? Also, emissions check can tell you a bit about what is going on in there.

YOu should check your spark plugs, it could be a detonation problem.

my car made a noise like that and it turned out to be an exhaust leak.. urs is rattleing though when u rev it so its definetly in engine- making this comment completely useless to u :)

Yep its your valve lifters. Or a worn camshaft
