can you skip over gears while switching or do you have to go through every gear. say your in second going 40 kms down a residential street. your approaching the freeway can you skip directly to fourth? or do you have to clutch-pass through third, clutch-go to fourth?
You can, mechanically the car should let you, but since you're trying to go from 25 to 65 mph, it isn't a good idea. This is because lower gears = more torque = faster acceleration. So if you go straight into 4th then you'll have very little acceleration even with the pedal to the floor. A better idea might be to hold it in lower gears until the RPM(s) in each gear are at say 4,500, then shift. Once you're up to speed then you could "clutch-pass" into a higher gear to bring the RPM down.

and if you drive a manual( that how it called no matter if it has 3,4,5,6 or 7 gears ffs) you will start feeling the engine power and you'll know exactly about engine power all across rpm range. according to that you will shift. there is specific rule, every engine has different power across the powerband. this sounds hard but it's easy, just like changing gears on a bike.
