Well I didn't buy it, my wife bought it for me... but if I remember correctly she bought it for $180... I don't know where, somewhere online though. A couple of years ago, I don't have it anymore because I didn't care for it as much as I did my BM 51. I got $600 for it when I sold it so I'm not complaining.
i finally got the cheddar to get me a 42 after selling a guitar :D now i'm waiting for this guy to pm me and gimme directions to his house so i can go and buy it. if that doesn't pan out i got a buddy i met on the forums and now i talk to regularly that might sell me his for almost a hundred bucks more :I
Well I hope you can get a 42 my friend... it definitely a great balisong.
I sold mine for $600 not too long ago. Sometimes I miss it a little, but I still love my 51 and 32 a bit more... I would be very sad to sell them... ain't gonna happen.
I put in a pre-order on the new BM 62 coming out soon as well... hope my damn check gets to me before they decide to release it. Gotta pay some bills now though. =\
600? you're evil man lol. but once i get my hands on one i probably won't let it go for anything less under a grand, damn i want one. i'm having fits for having the money for one finally and not being able to get one instantly. i hope you do good with your sales (you tried the forums like jerzee devil?) and that check arrives soon. everyone's hating on the 62 for being a stainless handled sandwich 42 copycat but i think it's cool and it puts a decent balisong in the price range of more people.
LMAO! I know... straight up wicked... all the way to the bank!
Thank you bro, I appreciate that.
I've looked at Jerzee Devil before... but I'm not really into forums much to be honest. My buddies MPSecare and Calvinnation are on JD too though... maybe I'll join one day, who knows.
I have my gripes about the 62 myself... but all in all I think it will be a good one... a bit pricey for what it is I will admit... and it better have a latch gate! HAHA.
@X4CTO damn right it better have a latch gate, shit for over $200 it better have a spring latch too, shit. on the flipping arena facebook i showed my displeasure about the materials and price on someone else's post.
Well I hope it does indeed have a spring latch... I mean at least from the closed position... I don't care much if it springs open while it's locked in the open position ya know. I rarely ever latch lock my balis when the blade is out anyway.
I'll get one and try it out... as long as it's a good flipper then I'll be happy. Might not beat my 51 in that area... but as long as it feels good nonetheless.
where do you get all of these funny little guns? (as seen in background) i know you say in some other videos, but it would be nice if you could give me any store names.
Yeah I mentioned where to get them in my "Small gun collection" or my "X4CTO's Big Update Video."
MonkeyDepot . com... but they probably don't have these exact models anymore since they come out with limited runs... that's the only place I know of.
Well I don't have a 42 anymore... traded that one... I never had a Spyderfly, but I almost did... I told that story on here several times... it's a shitty story because I lost my chance to get a very rare VG-10 bladed version of the Spyderfly and I had my head up my rear end and didn't take the opportunity. LMAO.
I do have a Smallfly though... haha... and a couple of Benchmade Morphos.
I will assume that you are in agreement with me then, that Benchmade should re-release the 42! =)
Oh by the way... have you been over to any of the knife forums? Sometimes people sell these things in the for sale sections there... or maybe look around on eBay. I do wish you luck... the 42 is a great bali, a damn classic that BM should have never discontinued... they would definitely make money on them still... weird decision on their part in my opinion... but what do I know, I'm just a guy with some money willing to buy knives, LOL.
Yeah I agree... well when you're talking channel handles from Ti... but they could do sandwich style handles in a more economical manner... then charge a reasonable price. Ti is not too hard to work these days with all the kickass tooling. My uncle runs a machine shop and he can do some crazy things for a decent turn around with his new milling machine... yeah the machine was like $100,000... but it makes business mo' betta, haha!
Yeah Ti definitely does cost more... but that's a price I'm willing to pay myself.
I'm honestly a little pissed at Benchmade... they're on my shit list lately... but I'll manage, LOL.
The 62 looks good... I'm not liking their material choices... SS and D2... ACK!
I like lightweight balis like the 51 and 32 and Smallfly... I prefer speed to control, LOL. I use speed to give the illusion I have more control while flipping... we all have our flippin' style.
Yeah I'll probably end up getting one as well... I mean as much I as I hate paying around $200 for an SS handled bali when the Bradley Kimura is only around $100 ya know... but at least it has zen pins... which I prefer over the 42 and Kimuras!
I almost prefer they didn't put in extra work polishing the 62's handles and just charge less for it... and use 154cm or S30V as opposed to D2... either way, it does look nice.
the question, which should i buy, the 42 or the 51? answer: YES. the only real question is which will i buy first? probably the 51 because there's only like a $75-$100 difference from what i've seen in recent market trends and i'll have a real hard time saving up for a 42 while that 51 sits in my bookmarks hollering at me. i dig the 51 because like you said it's more custom lookin. back in the 80's the 42 would've cost $1,300 because titanium handles were a $1,000 option back then.
Yeah the 42 is a great looking blade, no doubt about it... but for flipping I really just love the 51... damn thing is fast! I can actually get the 32 going faster than all of them despite it's smaller size... actually because of it's smaller size. Some people don't like how the 32 feels when flipping... I am not one of those people. =)
Well I hope you can get them my friend... they're all awesome blades!
i just bought a 51, get it in the mail next week - 1st balisong. I wanted to have the more classic 42 to begin a balisong hobby with, but I saw it was discontinued a while back. hopefully they bring some form of full titanium balisong back, the sound it produces while fanning is so unique and adds to that classic feeling of the blade
@Darkstar2520 wow thats the cheapest ive heard of most sites have them around 350 or so. To bad theyre dicontinued. my dad has one and i have knife envy :)
Damn it's a shame I really wanted to watch your video but you do my personal youtube pet peeve which is you smack your lips pretty much at the start of every sentence. :(
LMAO... I actually don't do that much... my other videos will show you that, that was something I did when I was not as comfortable in front of the camera, seeing as how this is one of my very early videos. My personal You Tube pet peeve is when people make judgements after having only seen one video.
Thanks for answering, removing the torx screws won't risk others parts falling off the knife unintentionally, right? Like the latchkey or making parts of the handles wobbly...
You're welcome! Well the two torx screws are what is holding the spacer and latch on, so you will indeed need to make sure to remove them carefully so as not to lose anything. It's easy to do though. The handles will not be wobbly if you reassemble it correctly also.
Alright, and for my most important question. How poorly do the lighter handles affect flipping. I bought a rather poor quality balisong four days ago, and it broke today from me flipping it too much. Originally I wanted the 42 but seeing that it's discontinued and I'm not too confident with my chances of finding a legitimate seller I figured I'd settle with the 51. Do you find it more difficult/less fun to flip? I know you gave an explanation but emphasis will satisfy my curiosity.
Honestly, I greatly prefer the 51 over the 42... I sold my 42 as a matter of fact, I would never give up my 51 or 32 though. I can actually move a lot faster and more accurately with the 51... it seems more precise to me. I can do some things with the 51 that I had a harder time doing with the 42 as well. I just like it better overall.
Alright, cool. My now deceased balisong had metal handles. And while I felt the momentum I could build up with it was great, the weight actually gave me hand cramps after a while. And since I can't actually feel the blade for myself, my fear was that it'd be so light flipping it would be awkward and hard to control. I think I'm pretty much sold on the 51 now. Thanks for your patience, your answers really helped out.
The 51 is actually lighter than the 42 in numbers, but honestly it doesn't feel too much lighter once you get it in hand... it just feels a little different. At least to me anyway.
It only took me about 3 or 4 minutes of flipping (the 51) to fall in love with it... and every time I pick it up I can help but play with it for awhile, haha!
You're welcome, glad I could offer some info on it for you.
X4CTO please reply, Does the pocket clip on the 51 affect the flipping capabilities ?? Does it feel uncomfortable ? Im very interested in this balisong. Your feedback would be most appreciated.
I don't personally think that the pocket clip hinders the ability to flip the 51 at all... in fact I actually prefer it. It's not been uncomfortable for me yet, it's actually very well done in my opinion... it doesn't interfere with anything I've ever wanted to do with the balisong. As a matter of fact, I actually prefer the 51 more than the 42 myself.
@X4CTO Thankyou for answering so quick, I forgot on very important question... The latch on the 51, I've seen videos where the person flipping has to constantly remove it from falling between the handle's.... do you get this problem often ?
I hardly ever get that problem honestly... it has resistance before it move to the area where it would be in the way of the handles... you have to apply a little force to overcome that resistance. Maybe it's just how I flip it, but I really have never had that problem. The latch pretty much just flops around a little, but out of the way due to that resistance. I do like the 42's latch a little better... but the 51's latch is just fine with me.
appreciate the side by side, good review. i sold my 42, when prices went nuts and kept a Kimura1 instead (now for sale). i plan on getting the 51. to me, it was time for them to update the balisong. the 42 had small revisions, here and there, but was pretty much an old 80's balisong. the 51 seems like the natural evolution of the bali. plus it just oozes class :)
My mom and dad are making me wait till my Birthday in May to get my first balisong :'( good thing is is that they said they would through a little extra birthday money in for a Benchmade 51! But you kno i've flipped a couple balisongs around at my friends house and what not but i've never owned my own and im still learnin. Should I still get the 51 even though im still learning?
The 51 is hands down my favorite balisong at the moment... in my opinion nothing else feels quite like it! I think it would be one hell of a bali to learn on. If you can get it, then I say definitely go for it. A lot of people prefer the Benchmade 42... I am one of those who prefer the 51 and 32.
Haha, that might feel neat indeed, but I wonder how it would flip!? It might stick between your fingers if it was too grippy you know. Still would be cool though.
I am selling the benchmade 42 with original sheath. Please contact me at blackoutdrunk17@gmail.com. This knife is completely sold out everywhere so contact me before its too late!
Benchmade used to be Pacific Cutlery... the old Pacific Cutlery knives are quite collectible as are the older Benchmades. It really depends on the model and condition, but yeah I would say it would have some value to a collector out there somewhere.
PLEASE PLEASE PLEASE, could u tell me where 2 find a benchmade 42, i reaaaalllyyyy wamt 1 but i cant find 1 in stock, do u have any suggestions as where to look ?
Your best bet would be on one of the knife forums or maybe on ebay if you can come across one. They have been pretty hard to find since they discontinued them, but every now and then one will turn up somewhere. Good luck on your search.
Try Knifecenter . com or bladeplay . com... those are not too bad usually. There's also a place called Shades of gray tactical that sometimes has good prices.
Those balisong knives are gangsta dude. I was hopeing to dave enough money to buy the 42. But it was too late. They discontinued it. I'm thinking bout getting the 32 morpho ro a 51 morpho.
Nah man, I don't have any idea at the moment... maybe you can find one on one of the forums like Blade Forums, The Flipping Arena (brokenbrains), or maybe on eBay eventually. Sorry I can't be of more help right now.
I have a feeling they are going to be bringing the 42 back into the product lineup in the future... it did too well for them... and I think I might have read that they are going to re-release it somewhere too... we'll see.
@X4CTO since the 42 was discontinued, do you know where i could buy one? I've heard to check in with a local dealer but that's about it. No one seems to want to give up their precious balisong.
They're not built anywhere near the same in fact they have significant differences. For one thing, the 51 has a sandwich style handle design whereas the 42 has a channel style design. One has two separate pieces on each handle hence the sandwich and the other has a single piece of titanium for each handle carved out giving you the channel design.
I like the feel of the 51 better, but objectively the 42 is a higher quality knife. I mean, milled titanium? You just don't get much better than that. It's discontinued because Benchmade can make more of a profit on the 51, simple as that.
I agree with that... milled Ti is hard to beat... except for carbon fiber, haha... but yeah the 42 should not have been discontinued. I do like flipping the 51 more personally, but like I said, I agree it is not as strong.
I think they should have put carbon fiber scales on the titanium liners of the 51 and 32... now we're talking.
I am not sure really, but I'm sure someone is selling one out there still... just have to keep your eyes open. Maybe look on eBay often... maybe you could try some of the knife forums... some shop could possibly still have one, might have to call around and ask though. If I come across anything I'll let you know, I always try to keep my eyes out for Benchmade and PCC balis on the loose. Good luck in you search.
Well only you and the shipper would know... you want the knife and the shipper wants to make money, so there should not be a problem there.
Your mail cannot be legally opened by anyone other than you, a postal inspector, or law enforcement with a search warrant. So, unless you have a history of bad dealings with the Post Office or local law enforcement, they're not going to spend any time or resources trying to stop a knife going to a collector. Just my thoughts on it, should be OK.
Lol this vid finaly convinced my to get a 51 I just ordered it and I'm going fucking nuts just waiting for it i'm almost like a 7 year old going to Disney land... I lost like 4 days just thinking about flipping a 51.
I hear ya bro... I hate waiting on new knives... drives me crazy with anticipation. I was the same way when I ordered my 51, just sitting there wondering what it felt and looked like in person.
Anyway, congratulations on the purchase, I think you'll be pleased. It is so much better looking in person, no photos I've seen yet can do it justice.
i was constantly laughing through this review man, right from the start when you said you were a big ol' slut for G10, great review!!! im getting a 42 tomorrow and hopefully will try for a 51 when i get the money
Well congrats on the 42... happy flipping... it's one hell of a balisong that's becoming a collector's balisong it looks like at this point. I hope they re-release the 42 later on... maybe an anniversary edition or something.
I like blade on the 42 better, but 51's handles look awesome, I'm not sure about the laminate on it, when I get it, I'm thinking about sending it to someone to replace the G10 with SS or Ti.
I think a 42 blade in a 52 handle would be nice. Titanium handles would be great on the 51 too I think, as would some G10 like Spyderco uses. I do think that the G10 on the 51 does a good job of staying in your grip when flipping, but it's not super grippy.
the decision was kind of made for me when the 42 was discontinued, because the price SHOT up, but i think i'd like the lighter one more anyways, thanks for the review and comparison
Yeah, I do like the 51 better overall... but the 42 is a classic. It's a hard choice, but I really do think the 51 feels a little better when flipping... at least to me it does.
Well I can tell you alot about the Mayhem, but it ultimately comes down to what features you prefer. The 51 has the titanium lined G10 handles and the Mayhem has titanium with a bead blasted finish, so the 51's handles feel "warmer" to me... not like the metal of the Mayhem or the Benchmade 42. The Mayhem is comparable in weight to the BM42, the 51 feels lighter (and is) than both other knives, so I can flip it faster. I'm running out of space here, I'll send you a message with my other thoughts
can you tell me where you get your knifes at my email is john.sansonetti@yahoo.com thanks

Damn it's a shame I really wanted to watch your video but you do my personal youtube pet peeve which is you smack your lips pretty much at the start of every sentence. :(
heroxlegacy 11 months ago
LMAO... I actually don't do that much... my other videos will show you that, that was something I did when I was not as comfortable in front of the camera, seeing as how this is one of my very early videos. My personal You Tube pet peeve is when people make judgements after having only seen one video.
X4CTO 11 months ago
Can you remove the pocket clip? That's what I need to know...
NuclearXmas 11 months ago
Yes, you can indeed remove the pocket clip... it's just held on by two torx screws that run through handle.
X4CTO 11 months ago
@X4CTO
Thanks for answering, removing the torx screws won't risk others parts falling off the knife unintentionally, right? Like the latchkey or making parts of the handles wobbly...
NuclearXmas 11 months ago
You're welcome! Well the two torx screws are what is holding the spacer and latch on, so you will indeed need to make sure to remove them carefully so as not to lose anything. It's easy to do though. The handles will not be wobbly if you reassemble it correctly also.
X4CTO 11 months ago
@X4CTO
NuclearXmas 11 months ago
Honestly, I greatly prefer the 51 over the 42... I sold my 42 as a matter of fact, I would never give up my 51 or 32 though. I can actually move a lot faster and more accurately with the 51... it seems more precise to me. I can do some things with the 51 that I had a harder time doing with the 42 as well. I just like it better overall.
X4CTO 11 months ago
@X4CTO
NuclearXmas 11 months ago
The 51 is actually lighter than the 42 in numbers, but honestly it doesn't feel too much lighter once you get it in hand... it just feels a little different. At least to me anyway.
It only took me about 3 or 4 minutes of flipping (the 51) to fall in love with it... and every time I pick it up I can help but play with it for awhile, haha!
You're welcome, glad I could offer some info on it for you.
X4CTO 11 months ago
@X4CTO
Awesome, that's very reassuring to know. Once I get the money, I'll probably order it.
NuclearXmas 11 months ago
X4CTO please reply, Does the pocket clip on the 51 affect the flipping capabilities ?? Does it feel uncomfortable ? Im very interested in this balisong. Your feedback would be most appreciated.
1xSpiike 11 months ago
I don't personally think that the pocket clip hinders the ability to flip the 51 at all... in fact I actually prefer it. It's not been uncomfortable for me yet, it's actually very well done in my opinion... it doesn't interfere with anything I've ever wanted to do with the balisong. As a matter of fact, I actually prefer the 51 more than the 42 myself.
X4CTO 11 months ago
@X4CTO Thankyou for answering so quick, I forgot on very important question... The latch on the 51, I've seen videos where the person flipping has to constantly remove it from falling between the handle's.... do you get this problem often ?
1xSpiike 11 months ago
You're welcome... glad to do it!
X4CTO 11 months ago
appreciate the side by side, good review. i sold my 42, when prices went nuts and kept a Kimura1 instead (now for sale). i plan on getting the 51. to me, it was time for them to update the balisong. the 42 had small revisions, here and there, but was pretty much an old 80's balisong. the 51 seems like the natural evolution of the bali. plus it just oozes class :)
zignal0 1 year ago
I traded away my 42... I liked it a lot, but I love the 51 a lot more honestly!
The 51 is easily my favorite balisong at the moment... it's very well built and classy indeed!

MboroMarksman4 1 year ago
The 51 is hands down my favorite balisong at the moment... in my opinion nothing else feels quite like it! I think it would be one hell of a bali to learn on. If you can get it, then I say definitely go for it. A lot of people prefer the Benchmade 42... I am one of those who prefer the 51 and 32.
X4CTO 1 year ago
@X4CTO Well since you dont prefer the 42 anymore you should mail it to me :D hahaa im jus playin

I was thinking that the 51 was made of some type of rubber the first time i saw it. THat would feel great
MboroMarksman4 1 year ago
Haha, that might feel neat indeed, but I wonder how it would flip!? It might stick between your fingers if it was too grippy you know. Still would be cool though.

I am selling the benchmade 42 with original sheath. Please contact me at blackoutdrunk17@gmail.com. This knife is completely sold out everywhere so contact me before its too late!

Does benchmade still make and sell any products like the 42, by that I mean how it looks
ShocKWav2 1 year ago
They only sell the 51, 32, and 53 as of right now... I've not seen anything from them lately that resembles a 42.

Would it be worth alot today?

Benchmade used to be Pacific Cutlery... the old Pacific Cutlery knives are quite collectible as are the older Benchmades. It really depends on the model and condition, but yeah I would say it would have some value to a collector out there somewhere.

@satchboogyfan the pacific cutlery one is now about 500 dollars

No I haven't, but apply some Loctite threadlocker to all of my balisong screws as soon as I get them... helps with that a lot.

X4CTO 1 year ago
Those balisong knives are gangsta dude. I was hopeing to dave enough money to buy the 42. But it was too late. They discontinued it. I'm thinking bout getting the 32 morpho ro a 51 morpho.
101Slowride 1 year ago
Gangsta indeed... I love balis.
The 42 is great, but I really like the 32 and 51... I think I like the 51 more than the 42 actually.
X4CTO 1 year ago
since the 42 was discontinued, do you know where i could buy one?
mcmadpac2 1 year ago
Nah man, I don't have any idea at the moment... maybe you can find one on one of the forums like Blade Forums, The Flipping Arena (brokenbrains), or maybe on eBay eventually. Sorry I can't be of more help right now.
I have a feeling they are going to be bringing the 42 back into the product lineup in the future... it did too well for them... and I think I might have read that they are going to re-release it somewhere too... we'll see.
X4CTO 1 year ago
@X4CTO Alright man, thanks, hopefully I'll hear about the re-release of the 42 before the discontinue it and buy one.

X4CTO 1 year ago
@X4CTO since the 42 was discontinued, do you know where i could buy one? I've heard to check in with a local dealer but that's about it. No one seems to want to give up their precious balisong.
mcmadpac2 1 year ago
They're not built anywhere near the same in fact they have significant differences. For one thing, the 51 has a sandwich style handle design whereas the 42 has a channel style design. One has two separate pieces on each handle hence the sandwich and the other has a single piece of titanium for each handle carved out giving you the channel design.
joey20112 1 year ago
That is correct... but they're both built well in my opinion.
X4CTO 1 year ago
I like the feel of the 51 better, but objectively the 42 is a higher quality knife. I mean, milled titanium? You just don't get much better than that. It's discontinued because Benchmade can make more of a profit on the 51, simple as that.
Doggieman1111 1 year ago
I agree with that... milled Ti is hard to beat... except for carbon fiber, haha... but yeah the 42 should not have been discontinued. I do like flipping the 51 more personally, but like I said, I agree it is not as strong.
I think they should have put carbon fiber scales on the titanium liners of the 51 and 32... now we're talking.

labuican 1 year ago
I am not sure really, but I'm sure someone is selling one out there still... just have to keep your eyes open. Maybe look on eBay often... maybe you could try some of the knife forums... some shop could possibly still have one, might have to call around and ask though. If I come across anything I'll let you know, I always try to keep my eyes out for Benchmade and PCC balis on the loose. Good luck in you search.
X4CTO 1 year ago
Hey, can you please, please give me your BM42 please? Just send me a message if you would like to talk about it.

BalisongZealot 1 year ago
Haha, it is a great blade for sure... have fun with it.
X4CTO 1 year ago
do you think i will have trouble getting it in the mail? since its illegal...or no?
xStraightEdgexH20 1 year ago
Well only you and the shipper would know... you want the knife and the shipper wants to make money, so there should not be a problem there.
Your mail cannot be legally opened by anyone other than you, a postal inspector, or law enforcement with a search warrant. So, unless you have a history of bad dealings with the Post Office or local law enforcement, they're not going to spend any time or resources trying to stop a knife going to a collector. Just my thoughts on it, should be OK.
X4CTO 1 year ago
@xStraightEdgexH20 very cool. that helps a lot. thank you.

Haha, well that's cool man... glad I could help.
I hear ya bro... I hate waiting on new knives... drives me crazy with anticipation. I was the same way when I ordered my 51, just sitting there wondering what it felt and looked like in person.
Anyway, congratulations on the purchase, I think you'll be pleased. It is so much better looking in person, no photos I've seen yet can do it justice.

skatingcreed 1 year ago
Haha, glad I was entertaining... thank you.
Well congrats on the 42... happy flipping... it's one hell of a balisong that's becoming a collector's balisong it looks like at this point. I hope they re-release the 42 later on... maybe an anniversary edition or something.

[kefiR likes]
I like blade on the 42 better, but 51's handles look awesome, I'm not sure about the laminate on it, when I get it, I'm thinking about sending it to someone to replace the G10 with SS or Ti.
Kefir96 1 year ago
I think a 42 blade in a 52 handle would be nice. Titanium handles would be great on the 51 too I think, as would some G10 like Spyderco uses. I do think that the G10 on the 51 does a good job of staying in your grip when flipping, but it's not super grippy.
X4CTO 1 year ago
the decision was kind of made for me when the 42 was discontinued, because the price SHOT up, but i think i'd like the lighter one more anyways, thanks for the review and comparison
whereyouben 1 year ago
Yeah, I do like the 51 better overall... but the 42 is a classic. It's a hard choice, but I really do think the 51 feels a little better when flipping... at least to me it does.
You're welcome, and thanks for watching.

X4CTO 1 year ago
hey i was looking in on buying either the 51 or the bradley mayhem. can you tell me if u know anything bout the mayhem, thanks
L1NG4N 1 year ago
Well I can tell you alot about the Mayhem, but it ultimately comes down to what features you prefer. The 51 has the titanium lined G10 handles and the Mayhem has titanium with a bead blasted finish, so the 51's handles feel "warmer" to me... not like the metal of the Mayhem or the Benchmade 42. The Mayhem is comparable in weight to the BM42, the 51 feels lighter (and is) than both other knives, so I can flip it faster. I'm running out of space here, I'll send you a message with my other thoughts
