but now he has lots of friends which is nice to see

but this may sound mean but i think the story would be alot better if everyone still hated naruto but then right near the end of the series he proves them wrong by defeating the final guy after ages of training and becomes hokage.

and it would make it more sad which for some reason i would prefer

I get your point, but I like how gradually everyone has grown to trust and believe in him. I mean.. one of the scenes in the latest chapters creates a strong contrast from the image in the first chapter or so, where the villagers all have their backs to him. I don't want to spoil in case the anime hasn't gotten that far yet. Plus it shows that he is slowly accomplishing his dream. That everyone in the village should acknowledge him.
