This currently 2.0T in the GC is a dog, it makes very little power, has a poor power band and little tuning potential until the ECU is cracked. On the other hand a GTi with a tune and a downpipe will run 13.5's (Mine does) The majority of tuned GC's dont even get under 14's... Big turbo GC's do low 13's where as GTi's with do low 12's/high 11's. Look at the dragstrip posts on both forums and you'll see. The hyundai is a great try for its first generation. The GTi has had 6 gens to improve it.
Keep in mind that this review is coming from a guy that drives very high powered cars... of course this car is gonna feel weak to him! just drive the car for yourself to get the best idea of how it will feel! thats what i plan on doing!

Can't tell the difference between an Equus and a C class? Apparently you don't know how to drive. Look up Angeles Crest Highway on Google Maps. I drove a Mercedes C300 through there flat out, the car stayed flat and the brakes stayed strong. I don't think you'll be doing the same thing in an Equus.

With just a software upgrade my car runs 253hp 303tq. Waiting another year to do the K04 turbo upgrade that gives 366hp and 380tq. I haven't bothered with 0-60 times, they're meaningless. I'll let you know how it runs in SCCA events this summer.

It's not an "illusion" it's only different because it's the first time this new car is beings sent to the U.S. market. The car has been around longer before. Hyundai has a 65g car which has a massage in the rear, with a v8 engine.??
Not an illusion? Look at the Equus and a Mercedes. They're nearly identical. Except, of course, until you drive them. Take a corner in a Mercedes and you'll understand what the extra $20-$30k is for.

PEOPLE, I just bought a 2012 Genesis Coupe 2.0T. Nice car, however, there is a smell of gas inside the cabin. Last night I woke up with chest pain. I googled it and found some others having the same issue with the smell of gas inside the cabin. Can you please message me if you're having the same problem.
I think the genesis is a nice car. Maybe the reason it doesnt engine brake because the koreans tuned it to stay in the turbos power band and why would u need to engine brake when like you said you have big brembo brakes n suspension.
I think, and i may be wrong, but he seemed to not like the car for its purpose of being a entry level track car competitor. Its almost as if the car is all bark and no bite with its real wheel drive, tight suspension, big brakes and turbo. At the end he says he likes the car for everything else, build quality, style, etc...i haven't seen enough of his reviews to get a biased vibe, but i have seen a few and i don't feel it. it seemed to be a pretty honest review. IMO.
i dont understand his complaint with the power obviously if youre paying 27k yiu can afford the 3.8 so if power is what you want why not just upgrade to the 6. this review should ha e been reviewed as what it is. a base model 4cyl coupe. so what if it has turbo? the cruze does too. doesnt mean its fast. a 7 sec 0-60 is still decently quick for a 22k car.
Finally - an honest review about the 2.0 - I test drove one and I was amazed at the total lack of power in the car - it makes no sense they would put this weak of a motor in a "sports" car - my Mazda 6 is much quicker. I'm now looking at the 3.8.
No disrespect Matt, but the idea of any of these cars is not fast stock. The Its all about the aftermarket. I'm not a big fan of the Gen Coupe, but I've seen modded 2.0Ts tearing apart the 370Z and going after V8s. That's the fun in these cars. ;)
i agree with this guy. i test drove the same car and i didnt like. i was pretty happy about test driving the car but i left hyundai a bit dissapointed.
The 2.0 is way lighter then the 3.8V6. Its easier to throw into coners. I know the power isnt hat great but I'm sure there are plenty of upgrades out for this car already.
The extra cash you get to mod a 2.0 is way better. 4000 will get you over 300whp and the 2.0 is much more mod friendly than the 3.8. Built off a Evo X engine block, the Truth is the 2.0 has way more potential than the 3.8.

In Europe the Hyundai is way more expensive, and we only drive stick here, so yes, this was a very interesting review. I was wondering about the 2.0 T (because 3.8 rips you off in taxes over here + at 1.63 Euro per liter!!! (9.16 dollar per gallon!! at the current rate)). And as we are very 'occupied' drivers, busy making art out of the driving experience itself, it is not a car we should buy. (oh, sometimes I wish being an American : relaxed cruising), but here everything is corner and turning.
@2fourOh Actually, you are right, I was too much stereotyping. But you should see it over here, roads are much less consistent, than in the States. I was there in 2005, and I liked it much more than here. The of cars I drove there, were living rooms compared to our 'boxes'. And since about 10 years, American cars are much nicer, than our eco boxes.

B.s review, Stock maybe not that much power but 210 isn't 2 bad, Personally i love the car i got to test drive one and it was awesome. The interior is very nice, And RWD 4cyl its pretty sweet, But really if you want power get a v6 or v8 like come on guys.. Its a 4cylinder they put out a little bit of a punch with mods they can keep up with the stock 3.8 gen And still be better on gas, I think the 2.0t is a damn nice ride and a blast to drive !

Great looking car. I agree the 2.0T isn't that great, but that'll change when Hyundai puts the Sonata's turbo-4 in. That has 274hp and will kick all kinds of ass.

I'm from Portugal, and Hyundai is an recent mark a couple years (maybe 15)!How do this guy compares marks that are un the market for a long time, like subaru, and hyundai???It's the same if u compare a citroen C4 with a BMW 1 series!Hyundai its a mark that surprised me a lot for it's development!And sincerilly i think this car is great! If he wants to compare, why not with, for exemple the audi TT? I had one, and genesis it seems just like it!

I agree with this review so bad. I just went to the Hyundai dealership, exhaust sounds bad, and that steering wheel really sucks!!!!! Anybody who knows this category "entry level sports car" knows you need a nice leather steering wheel. It looks great, period. I cannot believe the comments posted saying Matt is a dumb reviewer. Can they find another review who is so blunt and relevant? Good job Matt.
I would like to just take a minute to express my excitement to Hyundai fan everywhere. It is just truly amazing how 10 years after the Honda prelude, Hyundai came up with something that can almost keep up. The quarter mile and 0-60 times are about equal, and the Honda prelude type sh pulls .01 or .02 gs harder. But congrats Hyundai, you are only about 10 years behind Honda!

@wrert123 I was referring to the first year of production which is 1997. So technically the technology of the fifth generation Honda Prelude started in 1997.

@PantstofryPWNZ I agree that a lot of best performance cars were made in the 80s and 90s, however I think that Honda is having the last laugh. With the talk of gas prices going to $5 a gallon, a sporty hybrid was a great idea. The crz probably gets what the genesis gets for highway mileage in town. I used to rag on the crz as well, until I rode in one. They are a neat little car, and before you know it Hyundai will have a sporty hybrid.
@1993hondaaccord Although I do find that the CR-Z is a neat little car, it does NOT get good mileage for what it is. If it were a sedan like the Insight, or at least had more than two seats, then the mileage would be great. But there are non-hybrid small cars that get better mileage at a much cheaper price, and many have practicality with 4 or 5 seats.
The CR-Z does have a little niche, but honestly I think it fails at being "sporty" and "green", it got caught in the middle unfortunately.
They are only happy to see Hyundai getting bigger because many of them are Anti-Japanese, Pro-European car snobs. Once they see Hyundai becoming like Lexus(which I highly doubt), that's when you will see the real bashing.

The other Hyundai fanboy brought up the Fit, not me. Apparently the fact that the reviewer likes the Fit and not the Genesis confused him. The Fit is good at what it's made for, the Genesis isn't.
With just a software upgrade my car runs 253hp 303tq. Waiting another year to do the K04 turbo upgrade that gives 366hp and 380tq. I haven't bothered with 0-60 times, they're meaningless. I'll let you know how it runs in SCCA events this summer.

Last I checked it isn't 2013 yet. The current V6 is 300lbs heavier, has less torque, costs $7000 more, and has an all-plastic interior.
I was actually trying to save you some embarrassment on the 0-60 times. The stock GTI and Genesis Coupe 3.8 have the same 0-60. With a software upgrade, the GTI does 5.2. Sorry, but the Genesis is a lame car. Seriously.

It's not an "illusion" it's only different because it's the first time this new car is beings sent to the U.S. market. The car has been around longer before. It may not be totally original, it's still filled with many features. My dad has porsche but I wouldn't mind having a hyundai. His car is around 70grand yet it shows plastic. Hyundai has a 65g car which has a massage in the rear, with a v8 engine.??

Not an illusion? Look at the Equus and a Mercedes. They're nearly identical. Except, of course, until you drive them. Take a corner in a Mercedes and you'll understand what the extra $20-$30k is for.

I think, and i may be wrong, but he seemed to not like the car for its purpose of being a entry level track car competitor. Its almost as if the car is all bark and no bite with its real wheel drive, tight suspension, big brakes and turbo. At the end he says he likes the car for everything else, build quality, style, etc...i haven't seen enough of his reviews to get a biased vibe, but i have seen a few and i don't feel it. it seemed to be a pretty honest review. IMO.

i dont understand his complaint with the power obviously if youre paying 27k yiu can afford the 3.8 so if power is what you want why not just upgrade to the 6. this review should ha e been reviewed as what it is. a base model 4cyl coupe. so what if it has turbo? the cruze does too. doesnt mean its fast. a 7 sec 0-60 is still decently quick for a 22k car.

Finally - an honest review about the 2.0 - I test drove one and I was amazed at the total lack of power in the car - it makes no sense they would put this weak of a motor in a "sports" car - my Mazda 6 is much quicker. I'm now looking at the 3.8.

The extra cash you get to mod a 2.0 is way better. 4000 will get you over 300whp and the 2.0 is much more mod friendly than the 3.8. Built off a Evo X engine block, the Truth is the 2.0 has way more potential than the 3.8.

In Europe the Hyundai is way more expensive, and we only drive stick here, so yes, this was a very interesting review. I was wondering about the 2.0 T (because 3.8 rips you off in taxes over here + at 1.63 Euro per liter!!! (9.16 dollar per gallon!! at the current rate)). And as we are very 'occupied' drivers, busy making art out of the driving experience itself, it is not a car we should buy. (oh, sometimes I wish being an American : relaxed cruising), but here everything is corner and turning.

I was there in 2005, and I liked it much more than here. The of cars I drove there, were living rooms compared to our 'boxes'. B.s review, Stock maybe not that much power but 210 isn't 2 bad, Personally i love the car i got to test drive one and it was awesome. The interior is very nice, And RWD 4cyl its pretty sweet, But really if you want power get a v6 or v8 like come on guys.. Its a 4cylinder they put out a little bit of a punch with mods they can keep up with the stock 3.8 gen And still be better on gas, I think the 2.0t is a damn nice ride and a blast to drive !

I would like to just take a minute to express my excitement to Hyundai fan everywhere. It is just truly amazing how 10 years after the Honda prelude, Hyundai came up with something that can almost keep up. The quarter mile and 0-60 times are about equal, and the Honda prelude type sh pulls .01 or .02 gs harder. But congrats Hyundai, you are only about 10 years behind Honda!

@1993hondaaccord That's pretty much true of many older Asian cars. The best performance Asian cars were made in the 80's/90's, with a few exceptions.
But Hyundai's getting all the laughs right now, they made the Genesis Coupe, while Honda's latest sporty addition is the... CR-Z. Right. 126hp is it, in a hybrid? ........

@PantstofryPWNZ I agree that a lot of best performance cars were made in the 80s and 90s, however I think that Honda is having the last laugh. With the talk of gas prices going to $5 a gallon, a sporty hybrid was a great idea. The crz probably gets what the genesis gets for highway mileage in town. I used to rag on the crz as well, until I rode in one. They are a neat little car, and before you know it Hyundai will have a sporty hybrid.

@1993hondaaccord Although I do find that the CR-Z is a neat little car, it does NOT get good mileage for what it is. If it were a sedan like the Insight, or at least had more than two seats, then the mileage would be great. But there are non-hybrid small cars that get better mileage at a much cheaper price, and many have practicality with 4 or 5 seats.
The CR-Z does have a little niche, but honestly I think it fails at being "sporty" and "green", it got caught in the middle unfortunately.
