ALEX + MIKE + EDDIE + SAMMY = MY FAVORITE VAN HALEN BY ABOUT 999999999 TRILLION MILES!!!!! This is one of the greatest songs of all time!!!!!!! When I imagine Roth trying to sing lead vocal on "Dreams" - I just laugh. He was great on the early albums - for those songs - but this is (100%) out of his range/capability!!!! "Dreams" is inspiration to do better - be your best!!! Thanx Van Halen!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!
Im a huge fan of both eras, but I have to say that I couldnt be happier that the band is back with dave and are playing better than they ever have.ADKOT kicks ass
thanks so much for posting this. May-8 ~1992 time frame, I saw them at the Cow Palace in San Francisco. The whole venue was General admission I saw the entire show 20 feet from Eds side of the stage. We sang Happy birthday to Alex that night. I forget the opening band... might have been Alice in Chains. Some of the fondest memories of my youth are centered around Van Halen concerts.
Dave made the band. Sammy has great vocals. But, he ruined the music. It had no guts anymore. Guess it all depends on which era you grew up in. Loved Sammy but really prefer the Dave era.
@TheRoitto. here is some news for you in case you didn't know! In Van Halen, David Lee Roth got kicked out, Gary Cherone got kicked out, Michael Anthony got kicked out, Sammy Hagar got kicked out and in the Michael Jackson song (Beat it) they didn't physically see each other and work together on it because the song was sent to him (Eddie) and he put a solo on top of it and sent it back! So....OH WAIT...! I guess my question still stands!
@SuperOminous you're wrong. Sammy has a great high end voice and Dave has a good low end voice but if you had to compare the 2 Sammy is a better singer. If you know anything about singing and range and tone you would understand. I like listening to VH with Dave better than with Sammy because I enjoy Eddie's sound. I've seen both singers in concert and Sammy stays in tune better than Dave but Dave has a good stage presence. But you can't change the past. Van Halen is just good music wether it be
When i run for President of the United States. This will be the song that plays after my Republican nomination acceptance speech. Cant you just see it? Me waving to the crowd my family coming out and all of us huging and then my vice president comes out and we go down to the crowd shaking hands with the crowd. This song wil make the moent..
I get the whole "Van Hagar" thing... I think its stupid because he never replaced a "Van Halen" brother... call VH what you will, I'm a "Van Halen" fan so even if Kenny Loggins was their singer I would still dig them.
The great thing about this band is that no matter who the singer, the band is great. It just so happens that hagar is a better singer than roth, however, roth is the showman. With this band you win regardless
@bukofezra wrong is voice is as great as my mother shes not arockstar singing in arock band ia more about character and sam as none and is singing is overrated davids voice is underrated roth as unique tone
I remember when I was young two movies got me into Van Halen unbeknownst to myself. Power Rangers with this and Twister with Humans Being. That is all they did good. Hahaha
Wait a second..So Sammy toured with Van Halen before they even made 5150?!? Anybody got some footage of that concert? Was that tour their audition? And who else did Van Halen tour with (audition) after David Lee Roth but before they decided to settle on Sammy? There's got to be some concert footage of that floating around somewhere.
When Roth was around, Eddie's playing was raw and angry. When Hagar came aboard, Eddie's playing matured and mellowed. Both eras were spectacular, for different reasons. Which ever lineup you prefer, Ed's guitar was still the star of the show - and ALWAYS will be. Enough of the Roth/Hagar bashing. Ed was and is Van Halen.
Whatever happened to Eddie that he had to blow this up? Whatever version of VH you prefer, you have to admit this is good stuff. Lately, its just watching a once great band make retirement money.
Man this band was so tight and consistent. Sammy's vocal is note for note perfect from the album. If it wasn't for the piano in place of the keyboard I'd of thought this was just from the album.
@ROOKTABULA Yeah I used to think so too but I'm kind of used to the sound now. The fills in this clip don't hold a candle to whats on the album, there are some incredible drum tracks on 5150 and 1984 AVH is a very underrated drummer - I think 1984 used synth drums without stepping over the line whereas 5150 went too far.
Man, I wish they could have stayed together. They were so FU**ING AWESOME!!!!

@JLKnChrist Eddie wrote most of the music during the Hagar years. Do your research. Sammy is more talented then Dave and always will be.
