@albertrand71 they have a T.V series that is not bad at all, everyone has their favorite though.. search this ""Dune" (2000) (mini) TV-Series" they also continued it and made Children of Dune series too. Its very faithful to the books. People argue the acting is not as good but still its a definite watch for a dune fan.
I first saw this movie in 84 as a 14 year old and hated it. I've since become a huge fan of Dune and David Lynch, he truly made Dune as cerebral and bizzare as he was allowed to, even though he was denied final cut. Frank Herbert loved the film, so he must of done something right. Is it flawed? Oh yah, but it is not as bad as its reputation makes it out to be.
just watching this with all the imagery of a dark gothic style is conjuring up the question of why they cant do a warhammer 40k movie.......the dark gothic atmosphere lends itself well to that kind of film
David Lynch's "Dune" differs from the book. That's why many people criticize it but I don't agree. The whole movie was very well done, visual effects were great for that time and the acting was brilliant. Kyle MacLachlan and Francesca Annis were stunning
wah it's not just like the book.books are not written with a cimematic adaption in mind. what pleases fans of the book may not translate well to general audiences. narratives and characters are changed all the time in movie adaptions and if you had not read the book you would be none the wiser. lynch disowned the film because of studio interference which made him feel it was no longer his film or vision. if you can't enjoy a film for it's own merits than why set yourself up for disappointment ?
Someone should do an Avatar-Dune parody trailer with the audio of Avatar's trailer set to scenes from this movie or the Mini-series since Avatar is the same as Frank Herbert's Dune novels and share similarities.
Those books are fantastic but this adaptation is kind of a horrible parody of the great novels and Lynch was the wrong man when it could have been Alejandro Jorodowksy or Ridley Scott who both had amazing ideas to make Dune into a movie when Lynch was a gun-for-hire as he doesn't know anything about the books. He even disowned this movie in 1988 and doesn't like to talk about it for it's a painful memory as it taught him never to do big budget hollywood films again
I personnally just love the cast. I never read the books, and probably wont. But I wish they could make a another movie. I didnt like the miniserie, but I did like Children of Dune, but I have no clue if it was closer or not to the books.
This movie, today seems like a crazy miracle. A big budget production, directed by David Lynch with music by BRIAN ENO / Daniel Lanois (the Pearl)... one of the most cerebral, philosophical and old school sci fi narratives ever made. A part of me deeply wants to make a DUNE tv series inspired by the great american artist David Lynch.
I read the book first then watched the movie. I only liked the movie because I LOVED the book. I can't see anyone that hasn't read the book like the movie by itself. Dune is too epic and outlandish and ridiculous for a silly movie like this to do well.
the movie its horrible, cheap, not convincing at all, the script is a disaster, and the role play ......well enough for a day. today thanks to tech, we have better fanmovies than that shit, the story is ok but nothing special.
Just like the creation of book's world in the movie. Making Baron Harkonnen flying up the ceiling, mentats looking like zombies, or guild navigators looking like big bugs, instead of fish-like humanoids. Fremen fighting with LASER GUNS?! it was originally supposed to come out in 1975, have a team of authors work on the script (Herbert, Wells etc.) and have Pink Floyd do the soundtrack. That would have been great!! but no.....we got Toto LOL
I read the first two books of the series and I'm currently reading the third. I was really curios about the movie so I asked my mom about it and she said that I would probably be disappointed in it... mostly in the special effects but I'm more interested in the story. It's true that I am very critical about the accuracy of the story and I am disappointed in most of the movies that way (mostly if I read the book first) Anyways...I wanted to ask you guys if it's worth seeing :)
@free2runthrough Even if i have not seen it, some people would characterize the 84 movie was weird and it strayed from the book. I would suggest you watch the remake of Dune which would be shown in 2012.
I was a kid when I watched this movie...It was EPIC!!
I am trying to find it somewhere to watch it again..... And yes, the guy at 1:03 is Patrick Stewart (Picard), and the blond guy at 1:52 is Sting...Yes, the same one who sings Desert Rose.
Never seen it, but curious as to why it was one of the biggest movie bombs of all time. They nearly got Salvidor Dali on board from what I heard. That would have been interesting. I'm sure if it was done again, with a different and more truer vision it would be better. James Cameron or Peter Jackson on directing duties perhaps?
@DeadWhiteButterflies My god. Please no James Cameron. Yes he made Aliens and Terminator 2, but he has fallen into the pit of not being able to tell a story, and focus only on special effects. Peter Jackson on the other hand, I would like to see that.
@TerpaX89 Would you want for Peter Jackson to direct Dune, the sequels and the prequels? There are 9 books, which comprises of the sequels and the prequels.
@Sweetmervs Yes, but Herbert's Son's prequels suck and are riddled with horrible continuity errors (11 of them with 2 more on the way), so really it's only 6 total unless you want to count Encyclopedia Of Dune. Is Peter Jackson my ideal choice? No. But better then most. Really for such a complex story I can't think of a current director off the top of my head that can do it.
@TerpaX89 Thanks. I was just imagining, what would be the outcome of the film if he were to made 3 of the first books? Who would he cast for the characters in the book?
@DeadWhiteButterflies do not,i repeat,do not let anything get in the hands of that James Cameron...it'll all turn into a brightly/ugly colored movie with no story
Loved the book, hated the movie. Impossible to follow for people who have never read the book. Hard to follow even for people who have read the book. That being said if you could get into it... it was okay. Nothing memorable like the book but it was okay... The Sci Fi channel's mini series of Children of Dun in my opinion was a little bit better.
Horrible adaptation, but great movie. But that's what happened when you give it to David Lynch. Lynch is awesome, but he has his own unique vision (which is what makes him awesome), and can't be expected to make a true to book adaptation. I hope someone else does one, but doesn't make this movie any less great... just not a very good adaptation.
DUNE WAS A NICE PLACE AS MOST PLACES AS A CHILD YET

What I dont understand is why it was panned so univerally by the critics. The very same critics are always belly-aching about how Hollywood movies are so formulaic, predictable and boring...........so then they encounter a movie thats a bit challenging they say its "too difficult". Dune was the second movie in history to make more from video and DVD sales than it did at the box office.
@stegatops: One of the problems was that it was something like 10 years in the making; de Laurentis shot mountains of film and threw it all out and started over multiple times; they nearly killed people trying to color their eyes blue, before finally settling on CGI. It was like a 10 year TV serial before it ever got to the screen. It seemed to purposefully pull away from the book, munging philosophies and motivations all over the place. People just got tired of hearing about it.
Great movie even though it's not quite like the book but i do agree the Mini-series with it's superior sequel "Children of Dune" are the closet movies of being like Herbert's vision. I enjoy this movie since i was a kid in the 80's watching it on video and i had a few of the Dune toys.
Anyone thinks the closet movies similar to Dune are Stargate, Avatar, The Fifth Element, Total Recall, Dark City and The Matrix?
,Lynch's worst movie! This appalling mess should not have been called Dune but Dunce for the way they filmed the story.and butchered the characters..
The mini series that was made later is a superior and faithful telling of
the Dune saga and obviously handled by people who care about the story. and
A beginning is a very delicate time. Know then taht it is teh year 2010. The most precious substance in the universe is the petroleum oil. The oil enhances life. Only with the oil people can travel from continent to continent. The oil exists mainly on one country on the planet. The country is Iraqis, also known for dunes....
I suggested earlier that DUNE was an allegory for the Iran/Iraq war.......the only difference being the spice is really the oil and the planet Dune the Shat-al-Arab waterway..........and I got caned by the trolls for my efforts!
@stegatops Well its not an allegory, as Dune was there earlier than the war. But one must admire Frank Herbert, the author of the book for making the conflicts about short resources, global politics and religion a topic back in the 50s, when everybody was busy hunting communists.
Great cast. I wish Lynch could do it now with computers as they are. This movie should be longer and it didn't work out with all this " thinking going on in those heads" as to this trailer it looks like from the VHS ;) like in the childhood again! thanks
It would be a lengthy movie. They'd need extensive voice-overs not only to speed up the pace, but also to translate the thoughs, emotions, visions of characters. There's a lot of material to cover.
The soundtrack for this movie is amazing.

It's true that I am very critical about the accuracy of the story and I am disappointed in most of the movies that way (mostly if I read the book first) Anyways...I wanted to ask you guys if it's worth seeing :)
free2runthrough 1 year ago
@free2runthrough Even if i have not seen it, some people would characterize the 84 movie was weird and it strayed from the book. I would suggest you watch the remake of Dune which would be shown in 2012.

I was a kid when I watched this movie...It was EPIC!!
I am trying to find it somewhere to watch it again..... And yes, the guy at 1:03 is Patrick Stewart (Picard), and the blond guy at 1:52 is Sting...Yes, the same one who sings Desert Rose.

siskosb 1 year ago 82
@siskosb Amen. The 90's Sci-Fy version was much better than this "cliff notes" movie. The 2001 Dune was just ... awful ... beyond words.
But the books? Wow.
AirelonTrading 1 year ago
Never seen it, but curious as to why it was one of the biggest movie bombs of all time. They nearly got Salvidor Dali on board from what I heard. That would have been interesting. I'm sure if it was done again, with a different and more truer vision it would be better. James Cameron or Peter Jackson on directing duties perhaps?
DeadWhiteButterflies 1 year ago
@DeadWhiteButterflies My god. Please no James Cameron. Yes he made Aliens and Terminator 2, but he has fallen into the pit of not being able to tell a story, and focus only on special effects. Peter Jackson on the other hand, I would like to see that.
TerpaX89 1 year ago 2
@TerpaX89 Would you want for Peter Jackson to direct Dune, the sequels and the prequels? There are 9 books, which comprises of the sequels and the prequels.
Sweetmervs 1 year ago
@Sweetmervs Yes, but Herbert's Son's prequels suck and are riddled with horrible continuity errors (11 of them with 2 more on the way), so really it's only 6 total unless you want to count Encyclopedia Of Dune. Is Peter Jackson my ideal choice? No. But better then most. Really for such a complex story I can't think of a current director off the top of my head that can do it.
TerpaX89 1 year ago
@TerpaX89 Thanks. I was just imagining, what would be the outcome of the film if he were to made 3 of the first books? Who would he cast for the characters in the book?
Sweetmervs 1 year ago
@DeadWhiteButterflies do not,i repeat,do not let anything get in the hands of that James Cameron...it'll all turn into a brightly/ugly colored movie with no story

Dune is the greatest sci-fi series EVER. No discussion/
Sniffer194 1 year ago
Loved the book, hated the movie. Impossible to follow for people who have never read the book. Hard to follow even for people who have read the book. That being said if you could get into it... it was okay. Nothing memorable like the book but it was okay... The Sci Fi channel's mini series of Children of Dun in my opinion was a little bit better.

Don't you think it's funny that the same dude has been doing the voice over for the trailers for like almost thirty years!!!
When he dies, Pablo Fransisco will have to take over....

Horrible adaptation, but great movie. But that's what happened when you give it to David Lynch. Lynch is awesome, but he has his own unique vision (which is what makes him awesome), and can't be expected to make a true to book adaptation. I hope someone else does one, but doesn't make this movie any less great... just not a very good adaptation.
arthereld 1 year ago
This is a kickass trailer! Also, a valid criticism of the movie would be the fact that it departs from the book quite a bit in it's presentation.

What I dont understand is why it was panned so univerally by the critics. The very same critics are always belly-aching about how Hollywood movies are so formulaic, predictable and boring...........so then they encounter a movie thats a bit challenging they say its "too difficult". Dune was the second movie in history to make more from video and DVD sales than it did at the box office.
stegatops 1 year ago

Icy2429 1 year ago
,Lynch's worst movie! This appalling mess should not have been called Dune but Dunce for the way they filmed the story.and butchered the characters..
The mini series that was made later is a superior and faithful telling of
the Dune saga and obviously handled by people who care about the story. and
not just effects!

A beginning is a very delicate time. Know then taht it is teh year 2010. The most precious substance in the universe is the petroleum oil. The oil enhances life. Only with the oil people can travel from continent to continent. The oil exists mainly on one country on the planet. The country is Iraqis, also known for dunes....
alfa6c2500e 1 year ago
I suggested earlier that DUNE was an allegory for the Iran/Iraq war.......the only difference being the spice is really the oil and the planet Dune the Shat-al-Arab waterway..........and I got caned by the trolls for my efforts!
stegatops 1 year ago
