It's so funny how different the US and Japan are in terms of talking with strangers... in the US people would probably say "Happy New Year" back to you, but in Japan people are so reticent and afraid to look back at you, haha. I still remember my aunt getting nervous that I had told a guy on the subway that he had a cool tie :P
