i actually loved it, you guys are only gonna care about "Oh i man no cry" thing. it was a really sad movie. compared to all the "action" movies these days that only have zooms, booms and OMG a moment. this has a story. this review is probably the most screwed up review. a 1 and 2? are you like aliens? i bet the guy in the middle gets more love letters for knowing the story line and whats going on.
couldnt be bothered with this one, i thought a few reviews might change my mind but sadly no, still might watch it just to see for myself but its not at the top of the list.
They are very shallow to not feel anything watching this film, there are not many films that concentrate on such a theme.
I think it's made very emotional by the realism of the rape and murder, the fact that there are many sick bastards out there who prey on young vulnerable girls.
The two guys reviewing this are irritatingly ignorant, they should stick to the likes of jackass.
Guy with the glasses is one of the biggest PRICKS I have ever seen, not open minded in the slightest. I didn't enjoy this movie first time round because it literally made me feel sick (I wanted to kill Tucci's character the whole time, evidence he played the part perfectly), but I think it was brilliantly made. I now find myself wanting to see it again (ordered the dvd yesterday), as VERY VERY FEW films have touched a nerve like that.
To those moaning about differences from the book, get over
WTF????????? Am I the only one that actually understood this movie? You don't have to be a girl to understand the meaning of a deep movie, you just have to have a couple of brain cells (which those two fags don't have). The movie is great 8.7/10.
I didn't read the book but the movie was pretty bad. Two major things for me personally *Spoiler* is that they don't find her body, and he doesn't get caught. Plus the movie just seemed to drag on and on. At certain parts you are just like "What the heck does this have to do with anythin?" Plus you never actually see any true communication between her and her famly. Then the special effects were kind of bad/over-dramatic. I think the story could have been better but somethings just totally stunk
I just finished watching the movie. It was awful. A film called What Dreams May Come portrays heaven in a completely beautiful and breathtaking cinematic way. This was just schlock and cliches. The book is a good read though and the screenplay didn't do it justice.
i loved the movie it made me cry it is one of my favorite movies the only thing that made me stop crying was that i remembered she went to heaven. and im a dude
I agree that this movie sucked. That's coming from someone who both read the book and is a Peter Jackson fan. The adaptation was horriffic, there is adapting a movie for the screen and then there's raping it, hacking it up, throwing it in a safe and chucking the bastard in a sink-hole. And people complain that "The Road" was poorly adapted for the screen? Man fuck those people and fuck this movie. Susie Salmon would turn in her grave if she saw this worthless Piece of Shit.
This movie sucked. It was two hours of a dead girl narrating her life and afterlife. And especially really depressing if you don't believe in afterlife.
I seem to disagree with Jenk and most comments. I thought it was terrible, especially when compared to the book. Some acting was good, but the special effects were WAY overused, there was no good storyline like in the book and especially the parts of the movie did not come together. (So lala land, the parts of the family, the mother going away, the grandmother ????, etc.)
Ugh. I could hardly bare to watch the whole review! I watched this movie yesterday, and I thought it was so sweet! And the mom DID NOT vanish, she left for a while! I'm starting to think that they didn't watch the movie at all! Like, they just saw the trailer! Or, someone told them about the movie after they had seen it months ago!
@TheAllPowerfulBunny In terms of plot and continuity she DID in essence vanish. Its not about what literally happened, but about what the audience perceives, and how it fits with the story.
@TheYou0Tuber Oh, well I thought it was really obvious that she left for a while because she was so mad at the dad. However, I think this was waaaay more of a girl movie than a guy movie.
It's weird i usaly don't like these kind of movies but it's actualy my most favorite movie ever. Unless you don't like creative movies then you will love this movie
lol the most terrible review i have seen done by ANYONE. Now I know who's reviews NOT to watch. This movie was great and you sir's, are simple minded.
I don't know about this review, but I agree that the movie was pretty horrible. The spirit of the novel was lost. The theme of the novel was moving on (but the family moving on) The film dealt with Suzie moving on. That was what annoyed me the most I think. The Middle world was ridiculous and overly flashy, distracting from the purpose of the place. Oh, well. It is already done and made, and it has been very negatively received. Too long, too much license taken, it was not good.
This Review is terrible, it does no justice to the film. Also, i'm not being a feminist, but there were no women reviewing it, and it is more of a 'woman film' (More moving and emotional than action and grenades ect.) The film was never supposed to be an action horror. It's just a beautiful film and i really liked it.
Look people I loved the film... There are some people out there, that are (since it's peter whom did the film) comparing the film to LOTR. Which are not right. Even though I was completely obsessed with LOTR I do Love this Film, and I don't think even M. Night could do this film better than what Peter Jackson had done. Regardless of what the book had. Everyone knows that they don't film the exact of the book. Why not this film, Everyone loved HP and that's nothing like the book itself.
i didn't like it. there were too many flaws. the scene where the sister was in the house was a great scene, but the movie was just, blah. the heaven scenes were okay, but at parts it looked cheesy. it's a mess because you see these girly scenes and then it cuts to these disturbing scenes. and when the girl was in heaven, she had really cheesy dialogue. but stanley tucci was good in this movie, even though i despised his character.
@hippiegirlie123 So did I (male). The whole thing with the communication and the "In-Between" is just a metaphor to show stupid people how it feels to still love and live with a person that died already. The rose in the dads hand did not really turn brightly red, he just realized it. I know the movie puts it out difrent, but I think it's also understandable for people like me, who would never belive in anything, happening after death. Also : @eyewoodsay Transformers 0/10 worst movie ever.
girly movie??and these guys are payed 2 review films...grow up....great movie.. crap critics who didnt get it bore me 2 bits.....bet they loved transformers
It was a terrible movie, I went in it with an open mind, a joint in my mouth, and it started off well with Stanley's scene with the girl but after that it's terrible, Whalberg is downright laughable when he finds out his daughter's dead, the ending is completely uninspired, and like the TYT crew said there's way too many moments that just make no sense in the movie. I really wouldn't recommend it to anyone.
@XxSayrosxX Haha, oh yeah your right about Whalberg... I laughed my ass of at his overacting and the fact that he got his ass kicked by a teenage punk.
You give a 2 at the best. But this movie deserves -(minus)-10. Nobody could figure out what the hell is going on and her father and younger sister knows who the murderer is just by a damn random photo she took. It was so annoying and a big pain in the ass to watch it. Never been so pissed after watching a movie. I think the dead girl's screaming was so freaking annoying.
as bad a film as iv seen in a long time, very very very slow, the end was a non event after having sat through it. But the worst part was the holes in the plot, the scene with the safe, awful, it encapsulated the entire move, a cronic melodrama, dont listen to cenk, i watched it with a woman she thought it was dreadful as well, god the end really was terrible.
this movie in my opinion was great. but i found the stupidest part was SPOILER when the sister got the creepy guys book and just stood there and like you found the person who killed your sister
I'm definately scared now. I read the book when I heard Jackson was making this movie. I usually hate book-to-movie translations (as do most), with the cast I'd loved in previous films, plus of course Jackson.. I had high hopes.
But then I started seeing the reviews... lets just say I'm not going to see it at all. If you hated the movie, please please please read the book!!! It's actually a legit, good, well-written story!
It's a story about a 14 year old girl who gets sexually assaulted (tortured) and then murdered. In the girls afterlife exist all the killers murder victims, all children.
Ben, you heartless bastard, what do you WANT their afterlife to look like?
Yes, the book outshines the movie by a mile. The movie was too long for sure. It was kind of ridiculous in parts.
You guys didn't even seem to pay attention to the story. If you are going to openly review a movie like this pay atention and stop worrying about your masculinity. You guys just seem to prideful you are men to pay attention to movies like this. This iss not a girl movie by any means. It is a story about loss and life. In other words it acctually has a story which most movies these days don't have. It's differnt but good.
@csnell14 The story was fine, although it needed some spicing up, but the cinematography was terrible and the special effects were ridicules. It is a story focused around human emotion and all we see is purple trees. The acting isn't that great either.
a 1... a 2? I haven't seen it but I hope they have thought this through... it is far too easy for critics to get pissed off and give a lower score than a film deserves.. and vice versa.
But of r a film to get a 1 I expect to see some boom mics, huge gaps in continuity, set falling over and hear a crew member's cellphone go off.
i loved this movie.....it was really sad...but thts just my opinion... i honestly think u guys are just looking at all th bad stuff....im a 14 year old girl and if i was murdered and could never see my parents or boyfriend or brother id be soooo sad but happy just like susie was
Made terrible use of its time, and at 2 and 1/2 hours that's inexcusable. Too much is left unexplained (Why Marky Mark just gives up, why he accused Tucci, why Weiss leaves), too many characters are wasted (Sarandon and Weiss), and the plot is uneven.
I'm a 22 year old guy who actually went out of my way to see this movie. I wasn't dragged to it by a girlfriend or anything. I must say, I really really enjoyed this movie. It was very suspenseful and had superb acting.
this movie has much meaning to it i did read the book before i whatched it. But for the first time in my life i will say that the movie this time was better than the book IMO
I read the book over a year ago and heard they were making this but I don't plan on seeing it soon because it doesn't seem to be fairing well which is a huge dissapointment.
I bet if you didn't read the book you thought it was good. But I read the book, and the critics said that if you read it you'd hate it cause they changed it so I'm not seeing it because the book was so amazing.
I bet this movie is good even though I haven't seen it yet. Why? Because first of all the visuals look great, and second ambiguity is a good thing.
Only people with no imaginations need every thing explained for them in a film. "Can the girl talk to her father? We never know this there for it sucks", actually not knowing is an invitation to fill in the blanks and use your mind. It's also a sign of a great artist. Thanks to this negative review I will now go see the film.
Post a comment on here and let some of the users know how you liked the movie, I'd be curious. The idea seems to remind me of What Dreams May Come (which I liked), however this film has a higher IMDB user rating.
umm... do they not know who peter jackson is? he made horror comedy grindhouse movies, then he made lord of the rings and king kong. he's not some new director making a name for himself. also, are they trying to say purgatory doesn't make sense? OMG i never would have thought*
Some movies you need to be in the mood or head space to watch and enjoy. I haven't seen this, but it seems like this would be one of those movies to watch on a winter day when nothing else is going on.
three thumbs up??? If you think megan fox is ugly than I dont wanna see who you think is good looking. Yeah I think she vastly over rated, but she's hot and this is not bizarro world
His "radical evolution theory" was just that mutations can happen and they can be drastic... not that everyone will turn into cat people. It was nothing radical at all, he just applied it to an extraordinary story.
I find it funny that Ben attacked it with logic when the movie preyed on raw human emotion. I'm not saying you can't critique a movie based on that notion, but it wasn't supposed to be a straight-edged melodrama. That'd be like a critic criticizing Star Trek IV for not explaining the dialogue between the alien probe and the whales. It's not supposed to make 100% sense, it's a fantasy. There's supposed to be a higher level of disbelief, or else it's not a fantasy.
I saw the movie. I'm a dude and I'm completely with Cenk on this one. I ended up enjoying it. Yes the movie could be vastly improved, yes the logic was sometimes faulty. However, the movie tapped into a raw nerve of emotion for me. And I think it will for anyone with a close family connection. I like never cry in movies, ever, and I see a lot of movies. But here I cried twice.
Without knowing anything about this film except what's revealed here, it sounds like the two other guys have better arguments for the film's crappiness than Cenk's "I know it doesn't make any rational sense but I kinda sorta liked it" argument.
Oh gosh, thank goodness Ryan Gosling dropped out of this movie!! Maybe he realized what a sprawling disaster it would be. The whole thing seemed like a ploy to get that Atonement girl another Oscar nomination.
But for the people who hate on Peter Jackson, see Heavenly Creatures. It is exceptional.
Hey, also female here. :) He's calling it a "female" movie based on the stereotypes of male/female being logic/emotion. Not to say ALL men and women are defined that way we know they aren't I happen to be much more logical than emotional... but... on a grand scale, hormonally, it is that way. I don't think he meant to be offensive it's just psychological talk.
Haven't seen the movie yet. Read the book earlier this year, and enjoyed it quite a bit. Thought it wrapped up a little too neatly, with one huge cop out at the end, but otherwise was great. Looking forward to the movie, though.
wahlberg is a right wing tool, if hes in it, it ll be bad, and jackson is a mainstream hack, as lovely as lotr might look on the surface, its a hollow fascist war opera and it helped getting the public hyped for the following real "wars"
@random0815 I know what you're saying. Political affiliation is really important for enjoying the acting in films. Like Ellen DeGenerate. I can't stand her. If any gay people are in a film, I just can't watch it. It's just too disgusting!
Dude, I was answering a person who did not like Wahlberg's acting because he considered him right wing. I mean, I don't particularly like Wahlberg either, however, don't you think his political stance is a bit irrelevant as to his acting?
I love your movie reviews. I probably will not see this movie based on your critiques. I read the book and loved it. I imagine the movie would be a disappointment.

I enjoy it and did not think it was a chick flick, and it has story line that most movie do not have nowadays. This is just my own opinion.

Yes, the book outshines the movie by a mile. The movie was too long for sure. It was kind of ridiculous in parts.
But fanciful and cutesy? Fuck no. At no point.

It's differnt but good.
csnell14 2 years ago 28
@csnell14 The story was fine, although it needed some spicing up, but the cinematography was terrible and the special effects were ridicules. It is a story focused around human emotion and all we see is purple trees. The acting isn't that great either.

a 1... a 2? I haven't seen it but I hope they have thought this through... it is far too easy for critics to get pissed off and give a lower score than a film deserves.. and vice versa.
But of r a film to get a 1 I expect to see some boom mics, huge gaps in continuity, set falling over and hear a crew member's cellphone go off.

Such a boring movie. Just another murder thriller (a very poor one at that) with some SE (nothing special). Poor, poor effort. Terrible ending.

Actually, I agree with Cenk. It was a good movie--not the best, but not as bad as I thought it would be. The imagery was awesome, the score was okay.

Thanks to this negative review I will now go see the film.
fathead8489 2 years ago 2
Post a comment on here and let some of the users know how you liked the movie, I'd be curious. The idea seems to remind me of What Dreams May Come (which I liked), however this film has a higher IMDB user rating.

His "radical evolution theory" was just that mutations can happen and they can be drastic... not that everyone will turn into cat people. It was nothing radical at all, he just applied it to an extraordinary story.
Cheespuffs45 2 years ago
I find it funny that Ben attacked it with logic when the movie preyed on raw human emotion. I'm not saying you can't critique a movie based on that notion, but it wasn't supposed to be a straight-edged melodrama. That'd be like a critic criticizing Star Trek IV for not explaining the dialogue between the alien probe and the whales. It's not supposed to make 100% sense, it's a fantasy. There's supposed to be a higher level of disbelief, or else it's not a fantasy.
AxelLaw 2 years ago 2
Ben is a suckbag. I can't stand him
devourerofbabies 2 years ago
I saw the movie. I'm a dude and I'm completely with Cenk on this one. I ended up enjoying it. Yes the movie could be vastly improved, yes the logic was sometimes faulty. However, the movie tapped into a raw nerve of emotion for me. And I think it will for anyone with a close family connection. I like never cry in movies, ever, and I see a lot of movies. But here I cried twice.
Anyways, just my 2 cents.

Without knowing anything about this film except what's revealed here, it sounds like the two other guys have better arguments for the film's crappiness than Cenk's "I know it doesn't make any rational sense but I kinda sorta liked it" argument.

Cenk, I'm a chick and I think I would HATE this movie. I don't like these types of movies at all.

This movie sounds strange
Its like they are trying to make some child's fantasy flick about a fucking kid being murdered!!
Plus from what Ben says it sounds very loose and disjointed
Also whenever I think of Peter Jackson, I just think of the first time I saw Brain Dead, and can't help but laugh

lol, this movie sounds horrid. Like if Cold Case met What Dreams May Come...
furseiseki 2 years ago
Oh gosh, thank goodness Ryan Gosling dropped out of this movie!! Maybe he realized what a sprawling disaster it would be. The whole thing seemed like a ploy to get that Atonement girl another Oscar nomination.
But for the people who hate on Peter Jackson, see Heavenly Creatures. It is exceptional.
charliebubblesoar 2 years ago
Looks like a even more crappy version of What Dreams May Come with a Murder... shit this looks so bad!
stevenaudet 2 years ago
I'm a female and have no idea what Cenk is talking about.
apapat 2 years ago
Hey, also female here. :) He's calling it a "female" movie based on the stereotypes of male/female being logic/emotion. Not to say ALL men and women are defined that way we know they aren't I happen to be much more logical than emotional... but... on a grand scale, hormonally, it is that way. I don't think he meant to be offensive it's just psychological talk.

@random0815 I know what you're saying. Political affiliation is really important for enjoying the acting in films. Like Ellen DeGenerate. I can't stand her. If any gay people are in a film, I just can't watch it. It's just too disgusting!
