  • This is the titular track of "House On Hill."

  • Jorge Rossy was, in my opinion, one of the elements that made Brad Mehldau such an iconic musician and since Rossy left the trio became trivial and brad mehldau playing alone just doesn´t cut it anymore he can be boring as a solo pianist

  • is it true that Rossy has quit drumming and now he's a pianist ?

  • @Vitaminnn07 Yes

  • the best trio ever. brad is one of a kind.

  • To HoratioParker (1 year ago)

With all my respect for 100´s of great alive piano players; Hancock, Barron, Corea, Jarrett, Broadbent, Kikoski, Walton, Rubalcaba, Jamal, Gruisin etc.

I started as a Bill Evans listener in the early 60´s and have constantly listening to jazz through all years. My conclusion is that the players above really enhance the art. But two giants, Evans and Brad Mehldau, took / take the art of piano playing a BIG STEP FORWARD like Tatum did once upon a time.

  • Fine sound!!!!!!!

  • where?

  • This is from House on Hill actually. The tune is the title track, House on Hill.

  • It´s quite good the wave of energy that grows through the tune. Mehldau's sense of space and silence help the band to communicate and really create something together

  • no way, thats nuts, which cousin, 1st?

  • I don't really want to go into details here, but yes, first. I'm prety sure at least. I'm not old or anything, only 13 but if you ever meet him, tell him the Jamisons says hi. He'll know. Oh, and tell him Gerney is proud of him.

  • Music is not sport. There is not votes 2:1 or 1:1 ... All stuff is good, difference is musical taste...

  • brad mehldau is brad mehldau. and herbie hancock is herbie hancock. they both have their own voice, and they're both fucking awesome. we're listening to brad mehldau (the trio) now. listen to it in the now. you people seem to forgetting something important.. why you like music.

  • this is my cousin.

  • prove it;)

  • This is wonderful... great dynamics, relaxing, and a great arangement... i woudn't say this is boring at all

  • Brilliant Brad!

  • Wonderful!!

    I love his music.

  • Odd meters may someday rise above the quirky, but it hasn't happened yet. A minute or so of blazing 4/4 groove by any number of groups blows this stuff away.

Mehldau's very talented, but I don't think this is going to the next level, whatever that may be.

  • the only reason you don't like this is because you have heard 4/4 grooves your whole life. if you had listned to 7/4 your whole life you wouldn't like a 4/4 song. it's all about understanding of music. brad mehldau is probably the greatest pianist in our time, at least right up with jarrett.

  • i almost agree, bennich, but be careful: jarret is in a different dimension of any pianist past, present, and future

  • i am aware

  • altough, i think brad is a better improvisor, and has more intressting ideas than jarrett.

what i love the most about brad, is his amazing timing.

  • my friend, i see you are a connosieur, so i highly recommend you to get deeply into the solo piano concerts fo el Maestro, and i don't mean Koln concert, but things like Vienna, or Bremen-Lausanne...Timing? Jarret was on earth when time was invented, bro, the same as Bach! Brad, as Hancock, and so many others, are terrific, outstanding, genial musicians...Keith is in dimension we are unable to understand

  • i have listened deeply in to jarrett's work, and i love it. but it's all a matter of taste. i think brad is more intreresting.

  • I've heard odd meters since I was a teenager. Just because something is different doesn't make it better.

Listen to Trane with Elvin, or Mingus, or Miles. The overall structure will be 4/4, but everyone will be in a different place. *Simultaenous* different meters, instead of everybody slaving away keeping the same 7 together. Those grooves burn much hotter.

  • Since Herbie is still around, the mantle can't be passed to either Jarrett or Mehldau. Even so, I prefer Mulgrew Miller or Kevin Hays to BM. But that's not to say that BM's not a great player, he is.

  • brad is way ahead of herbie

  • Ok I love Brad, think he is a groundbreaking pianist, but to say he is 'way ahead' of Herbie Hanock is simply ridiculous. Herbie's experience and persistence through 3 decades dwarfs Mehldau's breakthrough up-and-coming contributions to music. Period. That was a very hasty comment Bennich.

  • ok. sorry. i know herbie has done more for the music developement, but then again, brad is way more specific in his playing. especially his timing.

  • all of them contributed to music, but you simply can't compare mulgrew with mehldau, with herbie, etc.

  • relly some of you guys , ignorancee is relly...

  • Sorry, but it's boring.

They're pretty comfortable in odd meters, and they can all play, but in the end it doesn't amount to all that much. Not much textural variety or interplay, which isn't surprising since so much energy has to go into holding down the fort. Also, this inside/outside harmonic approach has a lot of room for slop in it. Again, that's not necessarily a bad thing, but the fire doesn't catch here, IMO.

  • ah, c'mon, you're not serious... what exactly is happening here is that they are all DAMN convincing and this is, for me, exactly the right fire for music. not all music has to be related to dancing, although i could move pretty well on this. and, btw there are ethnic regions that find 'odd' meters very natural and comfortable. brad has a lot of non-jazz related influences.

  • classical trained nazi. go listen to metallica and radio head. slop? try harmonic genious up there with coltrne... also im quite sure brad is way my comfortable in 7/4 than you will ever be, and music is not just to mak people stand and be noisy. Hell, almost all great music is rejected at first, I bet you don't like jaco, you ignorant piss.

  • I do like Jaco. I like Brad Mehldau, too. I've heard him a number of times. But a player can be great yet still not transcend the medium. That's what's happening here.

But neither Jaco or BM is Coltrane. Never forget that.

And to even mention pop music hacks like metallica and radiohead is out of bounds here. If we're talking sausage, then bring up the sausage makers.

Are you into music or hero worshipping, make up your mind.

  • radiohead aren't hacks!

  • guys, btw on emule i got the video of brad's new trio playing all the things you are. cool think to compare it with famous aott 4 version!

  • i am a great bmt fan and i think this is the trio at its very finest! i have the whole version and the way they play time after time combined with happy tune is magnificent!! i like new stuff with ballard also, but trio now evolved into a bit different sound. jorge is my absolute favourite drummer! this trio made a revolution in jazz piano playing, it was prepared before by great people but anyway, brad's bunch did it!

  • to jazzgreek :

well, jarrett played this extended tonal material in late ´60th (as student-)- nothing special ..

    :-)

and phrasing- well listen to "all the things.." - standards vol.1 -

    thats phrasing and time_ing ..

sorry, but these guys are students ..

    peace..!

  • to jazzpiano251:

    was nothing personaly -

    ..peace !

  • hey doublearejazz,

nothing personal, but what brad is doing with phrasing, in which he constructs odd metered phrases against a standard meter, and then accelerates and deaccelerates the improvised line repeatedly, bringing it back to the downbeat, well that stuff has never been done. I love keith. I've heard his trio, and I've heard brad and frankly, mehldau is way ahead of his time. i think keith is way more accessible melodically, but brad's on to something.

  • Yep. Brad's the man. I wouldn't say accelerating/decererating has never been done,

but it's his concept of time flexibility and taking that to the nth level. Only since I went to America did I really dig the real spirit of what goes on here. i.e. the essence of jazz, -to be an INTERESTING player. Good players here do not just re-gurgitate, but have studied the ways to inject INTEREST into the playing. So....that means continuous quarter notes a la Oscar Peterson are out from beat one.

  • No diss to Oscar (an idol of mine) but the concept of jazz has changed. It's not all about demonstration of technique or to dazzle,

but to hold interest on a consistent basis. When it's predictable, it gets old fast. In a word...Surprise. That's no easy task. Chapeau to Brad. He's awesome.

  • my pleasure jazzpiano251 !

    ...peace !

  • I mean what´s the point of comparing? Don´t you think these guys (brad) knows their Miles and Parker..? If you want to use your talent, you better do something of your own, thats what this music is about.

And, yes I also listen to everyting from Jerry Roll, Bud, Bill, Wynton Kelly, Herbie, Jarret.

  • sorry i dont wonna be rude but:

if you wonna know whats a real hi-class jazz

listen, miles quintet, coltrane quartet, jarrett standards trio ( 85 til 89 )..etc..

    :-)

..compare with jarrett, jack and peacock are these guys only talented students..

    :-)

..and every young jazz-pianist who want be good have to listen masters as bach, mozart, miles, parker, coltrane, evans, jarrett and have dont waste a time with popular averege..

    ..its only a good advice..

    peace brother !

  • Thanks for the "advice"...

  • it is a real good video

  • Beautiful! Three masters at work; nothing less than that.

  • Don't forget: Larry Grenadier is the MAN. If Brad is the next Bill Evans then Larry is the next Scott LaFaro. Great stuff.

  • well, not bad..but jarrett trio is a "heaven" for it..

    :-)!

..you wonna see/hear something innovative -

how to improvise classical music ?!

look for video : "bach sarabande jazz guitar"

or visite renatorozic dot com ..you ll be nicely surprised ..

    :-)

  • One day I hope that I will be able to play lines like him.

  • Xie xie ni...

  • Te echamos de menos, Jorge

  • A bold statement even for brad

  • THE NEXT BILL EVANS? SURE LOOKS LIKE IT

  • Brad would hate you for saying that haha.

  • I miss rossy!!

  • Jorge's got the groove!!!

Well, all of them obviously! Really beautiful stuff!

Trios are the best way to flow in music, in my humild opinion...

  • Pretty sure this is 'House on Hill', from the album of the same name, the last album brad and larry made with jorge before jeff ballard joined the trio. Love Jorge's playing.

  • gracias brad!!!

  • This is why he feels every notes he touches. And he can project sound and silence in a very immaginative way.
