I forgot how much I loved this music. I need another dose of it. I dont listen to much popular music now there is no soul, it is mass produced garbage. This is gold.
@dancefloorkid so, in other words you know fuck all about Rowland S. Howard, Tracey Pew and Mick Harvey and their individual talents and contributions. Pretty dumb comment.
@nzoz1981 Calm down dude I was just talking about how Nick looked all drugged out while the other guys were playing, I wasn't trying to take away from their music. Shit, you people are fucking touchy. Also, I was a total of one years old when this video came out so no, I don't know much about them, or Nick Cave either. However, I do greatly enjoy their music. So there.
Rowland S Howard, looking elegant & a little perplexed by the antics. Just saw the doco. about him, Autoluminescence' (is that how it's spelt?). A great film.
As Molly would say, do yourself a favour! The mood & feel of his music & Rowland as an artist & man was really evoked in the film. A very special one, often under-appreciated & railroaded by others. Plus there's lots of classic footage from those early eras of the Birthday party, the Berlin underground scene etc. I came away from it feeling very touched & nostalgic.
@nzoz1981 Go to ABC iview. It might be saved on there. Otherwise maybe someone will record and upload here. Have you got someone that can record it for you.
@77AWAKE77 I set the DVD up and got it recorded... I liked it, very good documentary... however, there was a lot more revealing stuff on the first trailer that Ghost Pictures posted on YouTube a couple of years ago. I hope the DVD release includes the entire interviews.
2:02 - Poor Mick. "Hey, go wander around the crowded bonfire blind-folded and see if you can make your way back to your instrument before the drunk people with fireworks knock you in."
oh did i mention this is really fucked up & brilliantly disgusting in a very satisfying way? well it doesn't need to be mentioned. it speaks on its own .
I would have loved to see the birthday party. I met him when he was in Toronto signing books for the death of bunny munroe. I also once paid a stripper to dance to the song Junkyard. Btw If you get a chance could you check out my blog. I do Music Reviews. I know theres ads there, and its been quite tough for jobs here were I live. So if you could maybe click on an ad. That would be awesome.
nzoz1981 , I liked the music, but could not take the singing. I don't care who praises who/what. What matters to me is if the music "speaks" to me & pulls at my emotions. Which this clearly did not. It bored me. And no, I don't like pop. I actually have a wide range of music genres that I enjoy. But to each their own. Have a good night.
@ctopherm16 Well... Nick Cave isn't pop and the credibility he has earned over the years is justified. Sorry if this didn't impress you, but it is not representative of his entire work... My main suggestion is to not by pass an artist on your initial glimpse on their work... I can't promise you that Nick's work will pull at your emotions, but his work has for many people... it's youtube - there's plenty of Nick Cave & The Bad Seeds 'speaking' material. Yeah, goodnight.
That was the wonderful genius known to the rest of us more enlightened beings as Nick Cave singing with the gong-but-not-forgotten Rowland S. Howard and Tracy Pew, with the guitar contribution by the brilliant Mick Harvey and rhythm of Phil Calvert. The outfit was the Birthday Party, straight from the tense and very seedy Melbourne underground punk scene; pre-mass critical praise and recognition from Johnny Cash himself (see Mercy Seat). If that puts you off, move on thank you.
@ctopherm16 Nick and the boys pushed the envelope here and the Bad Seeds' music is the better for it with their own noisy excursions being used for greater effect and perhaps also more acceptable for audiences with acclimatised ears. A lot of this noisy stuff, including post punk and industrial music is an acquired taste but their is often method in the madness to be appreciated if you make the effort.

Yes, however I prefer to consider that those two videos are currently missing not lost, along with the documentary footage of the legendary Birthday Party gig at the Astor Theatre. It's possible that Evan English has a copy of the two videos. I have asked him, but he isn't sure if he does. He needs to go through his archive sometime. I don't know if they were ever played on TV, but I seem to recall they were. Both videos are in studio performances.
this video was made in Melbourne by The Rich Kids (Evan English & Paul Goldman) and other Swinburne Film School students in 1981. It was shot at the Hawthorn tip. 3RRR (community radio) broadcast a request for punks to dress up and go to the tip to be extras in the video. They also made videos for the songs Shivers, The Hair Shirt and After a Fashion.
About 'The Hair Shirt' and 'After A Fashion' - the videos for those two songs seem to have gotten lost, according to Paul - who admits to have lost them. Would you know more about those two clips? What they looked like - if they got played on TV - where they're where-abouts are?

@TheGreaterGood80 hate to sound like an Oz Rock Bible bashing preacher, but Melbourne also produced The Primitive Calculators, who Rowland S. Howard hated, but did confess that he had never heard nor seen a band like them before (on the 'We're Living On Dog Food' documentary). There were heaps of great post-punk bands from Australia during this period and most were very good, interesting and had a healthy dose of the 'Australian' attitude (debatable).
@nzoz1981 I think it's fair to say that The Birthday Party are to the Aussie post-punk scene, what The Rolling Stones are the London blues-rock scene.
So who are the Beatles of Australian post-punk.... hmmm... The Scientists.. nominated!!!
@nzoz1981 thanks as I'm pretty ignorant about Aus music from this time period. I found out about The Birthday Party because they are cited as an influence on bands from here like the Jesus Lizard and Scratch Acid(I didn't even know Cave was in the band). I'm a big fan of Feedtime, but that's probably the only other band I've heard.
my friends and i talked and drank some wine a couple of days ago, they wanted to know why i loved nick cave so much. i sang this song and explained the video. they didn't understand..haha
I should have known I'd find the Birthday Party on here. I'd never heard of Nick Cave til I went home with girl from a drunken, acid-laced birthday bash in SF. I'll never forget their cover of Drunken Sailor on her bootleg collection. Ramped up to beyond belief levels of manic aggression. Now, that's the only way I want to play it. Thanks, Nick
Lest we not forget. The 1980's wasn't all Duran Duran, big hair, spandex wank and Cliff Richard being wired for sound. We had good family sing-alongs like this, however Grandad dancing on all fours is starting to where a little thin.
i love this film clip, so trippy and awesome, obviously under the influence of some drugs but makes for an awesome arty clip, birthday party are superior to post punk/ noise rock movements
So much love for The birthday party, Crime and the City Solution, The Bad Seeds and These Immortal Souls!!! R.I.P R. Howard xxx

So, this is where Reznor got the idea to include the impaled pig's head in his video for "closer."

I've never heard anything like the Birthday Party, ever
TheGreaterGood80 1 year ago
@TheGreaterGood80 hate to sound like an Oz Rock Bible bashing preacher, but Melbourne also produced The Primitive Calculators, who Rowland S. Howard hated, but did confess that he had never heard nor seen a band like them before (on the 'We're Living On Dog Food' documentary). There were heaps of great post-punk bands from Australia during this period and most were very good, interesting and had a healthy dose of the 'Australian' attitude (debatable).
nzoz1981 1 year ago
@nzoz1981 I think it's fair to say that The Birthday Party are to the Aussie post-punk scene, what The Rolling Stones are the London blues-rock scene.
So who are the Beatles of Australian post-punk.... hmmm... The Scientists.. nominated!!!
nzoz1981 1 year ago
@nzoz1981 thanks as I'm pretty ignorant about Aus music from this time period. I found out about The Birthday Party because they are cited as an influence on bands from here like the Jesus Lizard and Scratch Acid(I didn't even know Cave was in the band). I'm a big fan of Feedtime, but that's probably the only other band I've heard.

I'd mash this up with footage of "Manos: The Hands of Fate" but most people probably wouldn't get it. People are dumb and that makes me sad. : (
