  • So much love for The birthday party, Crime and the City Solution, The Bad Seeds and These Immortal Souls!!! R.I.P R. Howard xxx

  • I forgot how much I loved this music. I need another dose of it. I dont listen to much popular music now there is no soul, it is mass produced garbage. This is gold.

  • If we launches this into space. Aliens would shit themselves they would never dare touch earth.

  • I always pull this one out at those special times......

  • i think the video is crazy

  • Why didn't they just name the band "Nick on Heroin and Some Guys" ?

  • @dancefloorkid so, in other words you know fuck all about Rowland S. Howard, Tracey Pew and Mick Harvey and their individual talents and contributions. Pretty dumb comment.

  • @nzoz1981 Calm down dude I was just talking about how Nick looked all drugged out while the other guys were playing, I wasn't trying to take away from their music. Shit, you people are fucking touchy. Also, I was a total of one years old when this video came out so no, I don't know much about them, or Nick Cave either. However, I do greatly enjoy their music. So there.

  • @nzoz1981 My second point: You're a dumb comment. HA! I win.

  • @nzoz1981 fuck yeah, tell em brother!

  • @dancefloorkid HAhahaha! I was thinking almost the exact same thing.

  • @dancefloorkid Also, this is awesome!

  • Rowland S Howard, looking elegant & a little perplexed by the antics. Just saw the doco. about him, Autoluminescence' (is that how it's spelt?). A great film.

  • @MsRedbelly I've been waiting for that movie for so long and now that its out, I have no time to check it out :(

  • @nzoz1981

As Molly would say, do yourself a favour! The mood & feel of his music & Rowland as an artist & man was really evoked in the film. A very special one, often under-appreciated & railroaded by others. Plus there's lots of classic footage from those early eras of the Birthday party, the Berlin underground scene etc. I came away from it feeling very touched & nostalgic.

  • @MsRedbelly Thanks for the word... I'm really looking forward to seeing it!

  • @nzoz1981 Go to ABC iview. It might be saved on there. Otherwise maybe someone will record and upload here. Have you got someone that can record it for you.

  • @77AWAKE77 I set the DVD up and got it recorded... I liked it, very good documentary... however, there was a lot more revealing stuff on the first trailer that Ghost Pictures posted on YouTube a couple of years ago. I hope the DVD release includes the entire interviews.

  • @nzoz1981 If you haven't seen autoluminesenct yet, it's available to watch on iview at the moment

  • @danielnelles Thanx for the word... I've already seen it... I just hope the DVD has extra's with the entire interviews.

  • 2:02 - Poor Mick. "Hey, go wander around the crowded bonfire blind-folded and see if you can make your way back to your instrument before the drunk people with fireworks knock you in."

  • Porca dio!

  • Nick Cave. Like a boss.

  • oh did i mention this is really fucked up & brilliantly disgusting in a very satisfying way? well it doesn't need to be mentioned. it speaks on its own .

    .me gusta.

  • So...fucking...gone!

  • Hell looks sexy

  • @mothbits If you think drug-fucked 23 year old guys running around in nappies is sexy than knock yourself out...

  • Comment removed

  • @nzoz1981 Man of my dreams

  • damn fukkin hot he is and always will be..well at least for me!

  • I love this song so much. I listen to it a lot in the mornings. No joke, its the music I listen to when I'm waking up and making breakfast.

  • my English teacher recommended this music to me....

  • No kidding! i heard about from my philosophy prof.

  • pure and utter punk.

  • @nzoz1981 I thought most insects only had the queen. Oh, wait, never mind. XD

  • @XXmello42 they love mummy

  • are they singing insect or incest?

  • @XXmello42 both... the song is partially about incestuous behaviour among insects.

  • just a must !!!

  • wow diz saounz awful.

  • porn music

  • Who knew he'd go onto "Into my Arms?"

  • I would have loved to see the birthday party. I met him when he was in Toronto signing books for the death of bunny munroe. I also once paid a stripper to dance to the song Junkyard. Btw If you get a chance could you check out my blog. I do Music Reviews. I know theres ads there, and its been quite tough for jobs here were I live. So if you could maybe click on an ad. That would be awesome.

  • Golliwogg APPROVES of this song.

  • I'm not sure I fully comprehend what I've just viewed...

  • nzoz1981 , I liked the music, but could not take the singing. I don't care who praises who/what. What matters to me is if the music "speaks" to me & pulls at my emotions. Which this clearly did not. It bored me. And no, I don't like pop. I actually have a wide range of music genres that I enjoy. But to each their own. Have a good night.

  • @ctopherm16 Well... Nick Cave isn't pop and the credibility he has earned over the years is justified. Sorry if this didn't impress you, but it is not representative of his entire work... My main suggestion is to not by pass an artist on your initial glimpse on their work... I can't promise you that Nick's work will pull at your emotions, but his work has for many people... it's youtube - there's plenty of Nick Cave & The Bad Seeds 'speaking' material. Yeah, goodnight.

  • @ctopherm16 Listen to 'The Ship Song' by Nick Cave & The Bad Seeds. If it doesn't move you, then nothing by Mr Cave ever will.

  • @ctopherm16 Really? I love his vocal.

  • @ctopherm16 also - fvck yourself

  • @ctopherm16 Eat shit Yank! I will gut you like a pig and your fucking children, while playing nick the stripper. Bwahahahahahahahaha!

  • What the fu(< was that?! Terrible.

  • @ctopherm16

That was the wonderful genius known to the rest of us more enlightened beings as Nick Cave singing with the gong-but-not-forgotten Rowland S. Howard and Tracy Pew, with the guitar contribution by the brilliant Mick Harvey and rhythm of Phil Calvert. The outfit was the Birthday Party, straight from the tense and very seedy Melbourne underground punk scene; pre-mass critical praise and recognition from Johnny Cash himself (see Mercy Seat). If that puts you off, move on thank you.

  • @ctopherm16 Nick and the boys pushed the envelope here and the Bad Seeds' music is the better for it with their own noisy excursions being used for greater effect and perhaps also more acceptable for audiences with acclimatised ears. A lot of this noisy stuff, including post punk and industrial music is an acquired taste but their is often method in the madness to be appreciated if you make the effort.

  • Dear Paranoia,

Ever feel like someone or some organization is watching you when your not looking? Have your thoughts and feelings become so frayed from all the tradgedy in the world that you wished you were comfortably numb? If you answered yes to one of these two questions you are now eligible to watch my new music video MOTION CAPTURE DEVICE!! watch?v=DjM3paIQmBQ

  • AAAAAAAA S00000000000 FUCKIN'G00000000000D

THE ENTIRE 'Prayers On Fire' ALBUM'S A GEM!!!

    FUEL4YA/EARS&MIND!!!

  • 1:44 Bishop 1:53

  • hmmm Junckies.

  • Yes, however I prefer to consider that those two videos are currently missing not lost, along with the documentary footage of the legendary Birthday Party gig at the Astor Theatre. It's possible that Evan English has a copy of the two videos. I have asked him, but he isn't sure if he does. He needs to go through his archive sometime. I don't know if they were ever played on TV, but I seem to recall they were. Both videos are in studio performances.

  • this video was made in Melbourne by The Rich Kids (Evan English & Paul Goldman) and other Swinburne Film School students in 1981. It was shot at the Hawthorn tip. 3RRR (community radio) broadcast a request for punks to dress up and go to the tip to be extras in the video. They also made videos for the songs Shivers, The Hair Shirt and After a Fashion.

  • @MickBellTV

About 'The Hair Shirt' and 'After A Fashion' - the videos for those two songs seem to have gotten lost, according to Paul - who admits to have lost them. Would you know more about those two clips? What they looked like - if they got played on TV - where they're where-abouts are?

  • @MickBellTV Had ta get the 12inch/single outa me WARdrobe to check ,,Side 1 Nick the Stripper Side 2 Blundertown and Kathys Kisses ,yer 12inch Single runs at 45rpm So much Vinyl for 3 Songs (wieght in Gold)

  • <3

  • PORCA DIO

  • A fucked lille insect'...

  • This video is just great

  • INSECT!!

    Only the best band ever.

  • One of the most underated and overlooked rock bands of all time. I have only met about 3 people my whole life who like The Birthday Party. I remember when David Yow of The Jesus Lizard turned me on to this band...I was shocked and amazed when I first listened to Hee Haw and Prayers On Fire.

  • Let the Gen Y blonde mean girls O.M.G O.M.G this ! The stockpile of Australian Art have allways shocked the bimbos.

WHITE AUSTRALIA HAS A BLACK HISTORY.

  • They make Ramones look like spice girls

  • @rotherhiteboy whatever you say. this music can still be traced back to the ramones and others.

  • Nick Cave has given us so much.....but I didn't know he invented 'pole dancing' as well....what a talent!

  • @steveobie1 HAHAHAHAHAHA, excellent!!!!

  • @steveobie1 jajajajaja!

  • The Birthday Party were/are a true inspiration for Art Rock, I will never forget the first time I saw them I was transfixed and in a way I was never the same concerning my musical tastes and attitude towards what a band could be and do live. In my opinion there hasn't been a band like them since and probably won't be. Part of their depth and believability is due to the fact that Nick Cave is very well read in the Classics. Sadly I could care less for what they all did once breaking up.

  • @NadaInterior And you would know it well seeing that you eat so much of it your brains are full of the stuff.

All your taste is in your mouth and you are completely bereft of intellect. Thanks for playing; Enjoy the Rice-A Roni and a version of the home game.

  • @NadaInterior thanksfor your honest opinion

  • is this nick cave?

  • @mysmallass nah... it's a Nick Cave wanna be singing a song about himself.

  • @nzoz1981 lol. why do you say that? The song is hardly narcissistic. "Hideous to the eye"

  • @StudlyCuddlyBuddy pure sarcasm to answer somebody who had a relatively silly question

  • @mysmallass it's just lil tween nick cave

  • Comment removed

  • love the song and video thanx Madi for turnin me on to this

  • It's amazing a voice so deep can come from a man so thin.

    Thanks for posting. Great tune.

  • nick cave preformed stragulation on my freind in a bar once after one ove his gigs in auckland. the late 80s early ninties.

  • @powertrust71 "nick cave preformed stragulation on my freind" lucky bastard!

  • its funny how Nick looks about 12 in this vid, but sounds about 50!! But in Grinderman he sounds so much younger...

  • scarriest music ever

  • hee haw

  • Amaysing wattchewcando winyougirton toppowedagalowes.

  • rowland i love you

  • at 1:21 porca dio !!!!ahahaha..

  • It's a cliche thing to say, but they just don't make videos like this anymore. Video is more or less a dead medium.

Back in the day you would just get together with your buddies and do your own thing and make crazy images like this. Even when videos try to be "gritty" they are still glossy and boring.

  • @TheGreaterGood80 Toitally totlly agree with your views there..music videos today are too clean-cut and 'nice'...the edginess in music is slowly disapperaing methinks

  • @oogie11 not so much the edginess, just mainly music videos. I'm sure people are still making creative and interesting videos out there, but you're not going to find them on MTV or similar channel. You could, at one point, but not anymore

  • @TheGreaterGood80 Well, I see where you are coming from. In all honesty, I feel that most music videos are bland in a way, it's all about dance and r n b and hip hop...rock seems to be taking a back seat these days...

  • Ahahahahah, the write on his chest, PORCO DIO! An italian blasphemy sorta like God Is A Pig!!

  • hole are a great band eh guys ?

  • can someone explain the vidoe and song relation to me?

  • @seerauberjohnny no i meant like after they leave the tent thingy and danceing around a cross and have a goat and stuff

  • f'ing love this song. nick's vocals are incredible

  • fucking Evil song!

  • good on ya .. good to see that while all those new romantics were dolled up in shiney suits listening to peurile crap there was real music for real people out there live long and prosper Mr Cave.........PS when queen liz snuffs can we have Nick Cave as king of australia

  • Adelaide 1980, Tivoli Hotel - Musical bedlam!!! loved it

  • I would click on the like button but as it stands it's at 666 likes which i think is appropriate for this song :) so i will just say that i love this song instead

  • @vampyricIust somebody is bound to spoil it!

  • @nzoz1981 - i hope not

  • @unclegus don't worry... i print screened it!

  • @nzoz1981 upload the pic, and share a link with it ^^

  • @mar1lynman5on1 i'll see what I can do!

  • @nzoz1981 SWEET dude!

  • So how many albums have these guys made?

  • i want cave to write the new australian anthem

  • This is Australia's gift to the world ... mind bending twisted gutter tones. Never better, never bettered ...

  • Cooooool - I love Youtube; here I find all my favourite songs, even The Birthday Party!!!! Reminds me of those days when we still listened to LPs... Thanks for posting this!!!

  • Halloween song

  • @noongar1234 The guy can't sing for shit, yet Johnny Cash covered one of his songs 'The Mercy Seat' later in his career. I really do hope you are a little more enligthened about Nick Cave than your comment suggests.

  • @noongar1234 Listen to the song Shivers, or Into My Arms, then say that nick cave cant sing, douchebag.

  • @ggriggles The guy didn't answer back.. doesn't that say a lot about the person behind the comment?

  • @nzoz1981 or maybe he just has better things to do than get in fights on youtube about his opinion. not that i agree at all with him, but still.

  • @thedharmabum67 True...

  • @noongar1234 its not about the singing moron, the song is meant to give a certain feeling. It becomes infectious after the first listening for me anyway!

  • @noongar1234 ... go back to your justin bebeir existence gimp, mr cave is an artist not some radio friendly marketing tool designed to feed the ever complacent masses, intellect propels this man not ambiance.........

  • fucken amazing. long live nick

  • So, this is where Reznor got the idea to include the impaled pig's head in his video for "closer."

  • The calculators were brilliant. Sadly Rowland missed a trick there. Shame i wasn't around for their reuion shows.

  • @MrMeddled FUCK YOU

argentina rocks better than your shit of country

  • @MrMeddled lol.... leaving Canada out of the list and then bringing up Rush might hurt a few of our Canuck friends.

  • I've never heard anything like the Birthday Party, ever

  • @TheGreaterGood80 hate to sound like an Oz Rock Bible bashing preacher, but Melbourne also produced The Primitive Calculators, who Rowland S. Howard hated, but did confess that he had never heard nor seen a band like them before (on the 'We're Living On Dog Food' documentary). There were heaps of great post-punk bands from Australia during this period and most were very good, interesting and had a healthy dose of the 'Australian' attitude (debatable).

  • @nzoz1981 I think it's fair to say that The Birthday Party are to the Aussie post-punk scene, what The Rolling Stones are the London blues-rock scene.

So who are the Beatles of Australian post-punk.... hmmm... The Scientists.. nominated!!!

  • @nzoz1981 thanks as I'm pretty ignorant about Aus music from this time period. I found out about The Birthday Party because they are cited as an influence on bands from here like the Jesus Lizard and Scratch Acid(I didn't even know Cave was in the band). I'm a big fan of Feedtime, but that's probably the only other band I've heard.

  • GOAT KISSES!

  • so fucking niceeee

  • this is what it feels liek to be my brain 24/7

  • such a great band/song!

  • my friends and i talked and drank some wine a couple of days ago, they wanted to know why i loved nick cave so much. i sang this song and explained the video. they didn't understand..haha

  • How many fuckin drugs !

  • @BigPorro2 At least we know what its like to win a war.

    Remember the Falklands?

  • Comment removed

  • 30 years later and Nick Cave is still dancing around his pants.

  • I caught myself today singing:

Jaaaack the Riiiipper, a-hideous to the eye...

    hahahahaha XD

too much nick cave is no good for you!

  • mistrz

  • I should have known I'd find the Birthday Party on here. I'd never heard of Nick Cave til I went home with girl from a drunken, acid-laced birthday bash in SF. I'll never forget their cover of Drunken Sailor on her bootleg collection. Ramped up to beyond belief levels of manic aggression. Now, that's the only way I want to play it. Thanks, Nick

  • @kevin652010

Replicating those events and conditions is now on my bucket list....

  • banned for years from New Zealand television - hah! Go Nick and the boys *yeah*!

  • I'd mash this up with footage of "Manos: The Hands of Fate" but most people probably wouldn't get it. People are dumb and that makes me sad. : (

  • no one understood my halloween costume, "im nick the stripper, douchebags!"

  • "He's in his birthday suit. He's in his birthday suit. He's in his birthday suit. He's in his birthday suit."

  • ha ha ha @ uncle nick

  • No other band sounds quite like the Birthday Party...

  • @raggedyanarchist check out Yell O Yell

  • This is demented...

  • oh my ..lol !

  • Lest we not forget. The 1980's wasn't all Duran Duran, big hair, spandex wank and Cliff Richard being wired for sound. We had good family sing-alongs like this, however Grandad dancing on all fours is starting to where a little thin.

  • I first saw this clip tripping on Acid back in 86 and couldn't stop laughing for days

  • His voice reminds me of Carl McCoy of Fields of the Nephilim.

  • I love these guys,.....I heard them 10 years ago. I fell in love! check out lydia luch,..they did GREAT songs together

  • PORCA DIO! ahah!

  • You will be offended.

  • Well, he's a FAT LITTLE INSECT-AH!!!!

  • As many times as I watch this, it never stops being cool.

  • I wouldn't be myself if I didn't make a comment on this particular video.

  • i love this film clip, so trippy and awesome, obviously under the influence of some drugs but makes for an awesome arty clip, birthday party are superior to post punk/ noise rock movements

  • Nick Cave is something that you find nestled deep in the wild. A rare beast!

  • this is so fucking weird

    and i love it.

  • i love nick cave. he's my hero
