Both great singers!!! I dont want to get into who is "more superior" because I think in their own right Both Ladies are great. Mariah has a beautifully trained voice and range; Whitney was blessed with a soulfilled and angelic voice....My opinion of who is more talented depends on the circumstances, like now verses 10-15 years ago....I think Whitney was better then, before the crack and crazy stuff, and Mariah has brought herself back from pressure to have a decent and stable career and life.

This "comparison" is such a JOKE. The song was performed the way it was vocally arranged and recorded. It would be one thing if it were a "free-for-all" but it wasn't. They each performed their parts and the other gave them their room. You're talking about "the voice" and who "disappeared" for nothing. You should learn about frequencies in the upper range being more audible, AND learn about live mixing, etc before you attempt to compare vocalists in the future.
Actually, this is a bad pairing because they sing in the same keys for too much of the song, both powerful singers. Love both of their voices, but together they get on my nerves equally.

But this song was never performed at the Grammy Awards, it was performed at the Academy Awards in 1999 AFTER the performance on Oprah in 1998
And please allow me to comment once more on Mariah's vocals. She is able to hit the notes she does because she sings in a faulseto voice and uses whistle tones and is singing purely in head tone. Celine Dion however is a true Soprano. Singing mostly from the chest and can hold longer noted than MC and WH.

For the past ten years she's sounded like she's singing through an air gun... it's kind of sad, she has to whisper through most of her songs. Whitney's performance here was powerful ! At the 1 minute point in this video Cissy takes lead and she blew away all the competition with those vocals back then.

A massive chunk of Mariah's voice is disconnected which some would argue leaves her with 3 octaves.. and her lows are almost completely air.Whitney has a completely solid and connected low,mid,high chest and headvoice which is powerful all the way through.Mariah has gaps.

Both are great singers but in this performance Mariah did seem to shine more versus the Oscars where Whitney sounded better. As far as their artistry, I prefer Mariah. She's proven to be very versatile in the songwriting and production of her material. It's rare that an artist can have such an array of hit songs that range from 'Vision Of Love,' 'My All' & 'We Belong Together' to 'Honey,' 'Heartbreaker' & 'Touch My Body.' I also appreciate she takes risks like with her collaboration with O.D.B.

Whitney was totally relaxed and belting all her notes, and although Mariah did a good job, she was off and focusing hard to maintain her control. Also, on that first part, Whitney just belted all in one breath, while Mariah took a breath, and ended her note early. Whitney's jumping & carrying on was Whitney feeling it. The song is arranged such that Whitney has more of the melodious parts when harmonizing, and Mariah is harmonizing with her. Although Mariah is hitting higher notes than Whitney on that part, it's done like that for proper harmony...they can't do the same note, or it'd be unison, and wouldn't sound right. That part isn't a battle.

Mariah had some nice runs when she had Kelly and Melonie singing backup because she learned from them. Mariah was good but she's never quite been what Whitney was as a vocalist.

I love both these women, they are 2 of the greatest vocalist in the world...However, Mariah is far far far superior than Whitney. Mariah's voice has got it all, range, power, versatility, control, etc. She can even layer her own voice that's why on some of her songs it seems there are 4 or 5 differetn Mariah singing, who else does that?, just an amzing artist overall...

This "comparison" is such a JOKE. The song was performed the way it was vocally arranged and recorded. It would be one thing if it were a "free-for-all" but it wasn't. They each performed their parts and the other gave them their room. You're talking about "the voice" and who "disappeared" for nothing. You should learn about frequencies in the upper range being more audible, AND learn about live mixing, etc before you attempt to compare vocalists in the future.

But this song was never performed at the Grammy Awards, it was performed at the Academy Awards in 1999 AFTER the performance on Oprah in 1998

And please allow me to comment once more on Mariah's vocals. She is able to hit the notes she does because she sings in a faulseto voice and uses whistle tones and is singing purely in head tone. Where Whitney sings Saprano in chest and head tones. She has a pure quality to her voice where you understand what is said in all of her high notes where in MC's case you don't. Celine Dion however is a true Soprano. Singing mostly from the chest and can hold longer noted than MC and WH.

ActuActually, Whitney hit the notes much better than Mariah, Mariah's kept her voice constant, where as Whitney went all out. That's why she struggled. Mariah laughed because that note was hard, and it was a nod to Whitney. Look at both of them singing the National Anthem. How Whitey kept her noted @ the same strength while Mariah didn't even come close, she just let her voice flow (which pop singers like Justin Timberlake and Taylor Swift also did) over the powerful notes.

mariah blew her voice out years ago...when she first started it was crisp, clear and powerful. For the past ten years she's sounded like she's singing through an air gun... it's kind of sad, she has to whisper through most of her songs. Whitney's performance here was powerful ! Although she did last a lot longer than Mariah as far as quality of voice, she too has had issues and most likely because of her battle with addiction. Bottom line, Whitney set the standard begining in the late 80s.

Check out the YouTube video: "Sweet Inspirations - Sweet Inspiration" posted by 'lailoenisa'. Whitney's mother (Cissy Houston) was part of this 60's girl group and in this song you will hear what sounds like Whitney herself in the group. At the 1 minute point in this video Cissy takes lead and she blew away all the competition with those vocals back then.

Um, to the creater of this video...LOUDER does not mean BETTER. I agree with someone who says that they do not duet well together. Mariah always seemed intimidated by Whitney every time they sang together and Whitney would sometimes over sing to let her know "i'm the better singer" (and personally I think she is too) but their duet in this song isn't really my cup of tea. I like them individually. Personally, Mariah clearly can't outsing Miss Houston. Whitney will always be known as THE VOICE .

A massive chunk of Mariah's voice is disconnected which some would argue leaves her with 3 octaves.. and her lows are almost completely air.Whitney has a completely solid and connected low,mid,high chest and headvoice which is powerful all the way through.Mariah has gaps.

Both are great singers but in this performance Mariah did seem to shine more versus the Oscars where Whitney sounded better. As far as their artistry, I prefer Mariah. She's proven to be very versatile in the songwriting and production of her material. It's rare that an artist can have such an array of hit songs that range from 'Vision Of Love,' 'My All' & 'We Belong Together' to 'Honey,' 'Heartbreaker' & 'Touch My Body.' I also appreciate she takes risks like with her collaboration with O.D.B.

Sorry to inform you, but, Whitney so outsang Mariah on this. Whitney was totally relaxed and belting all her notes, and although Mariah did a good job, she was off and focusing hard to maintain her control. Also, on that first part, Whitney just belted all in one breath, while Mariah took a breath, and ended her note early. Whitney's jumping & carrying on was Whitney feeling it. Don't forget she's a (burning red hot) church lady! ROFL

@stevie586 BTW, I forgot to say. Don't pay attention to the notes they hit...it is the harmony. The song is arranged such that Whitney has more of the melodious parts when harmonizing, and Mariah is harmonizing with her. Although Mariah is hitting higher notes than Whitney on that part, it's done like that for proper harmony...they can't do the same note, or it'd be unison, and wouldn't sound right. That part isn't a battle.
