dono about you but my yj is fine for that usually never have to put it in 4x4 live in northern ontario so maybe its the type of tire you have or somethin
I had a 01' TJ, The problem with Jeeps in the winter is all the weight is on the front axle. I found hanging 400lb of steel on the rear bumper during the winter solves that problem.
I would highly recommend a twin stick shifter and try front wheel drive on ice in your CJ. I did this on my 80 CJ5 and really enjoy it. Far less spooky than 4wd on glare ice, much better traction than RWD mode. Very handy for alternating dry/icy pavement when you can't practically shift fast enough. It's not recommended for high traction and a heavy foot, the D30 tie rod was not designed to take it.
@MrAjb123ajb One of two things could result in that comment. One, you're 12 and your dad owns a ford and you haven't another opinion. 2 you've seen that on a few youtube videos where it's ford v. chevy and the ford wins.
Regardless, they are two completely different vehicles. It's like having a classic muscle car, then when it fails to perform, you go out and say, "Get a mustang". The CJ-5-7 are an american legends known for the prowess in climbing and all terrain.
@MrAjb123ajb i owned ford and i currently own a jeep i will never get anything other then a jeep again i have taken my jeep through stuff my truck would have never thought about makin it trough and in 2wd on top of it
Ya, trying to accelerate quickly in the snow is like trying to stop quickly in the snow... Doesn't work. You need to start off at an idle and use your engine to slow you down. The gas and break pedals are almost useless in the snow. And why didn't you have it in 4 wheel drive? I've never heard of a 2WD Jeep =/
next time dont drive in same ruts as everyone else, put left wheels in center snow and right wheels on far rightbank. the packed snow in the ruts freezes and turns to ice first while the stuff in the center is still snow. second, go slow, not spinnig tires, and if you lose grip turn front whels slightly to gain traction. lastly, use ockers if you got them and keep tire chains or two strips of 6 foot long carpet rolled up inthe back and you will be unstuck in a jiffy.
@Tephladon gootires and 4wd will help alot in traction spikes and chains are not a must. even ist not legal to drive with chains on the road were i live. and we get 6-8 feet of snow each winter
even siped winter tires in 4wd couldn't have helped that case, he was on an incline on solid ice. Rubber just doesn't have the coefficient of friction with ice required to move a 4000# vehicle uphill. He probably could have backed down, or maybe been able to move to the side, but it looked like those ruts were iced up the sides as well.
i have a question im going to be putting a 4inch superlift liftkit on a 1978 jeep cj5.just a few years ago had the motor rebuilt while getting fixed because of a problem when my father was driving it. after 9 months of sitting at a garage be worked on trying to find out the problem. well turns out my dad acidently put diesel fuel in the stock 304 v8.but i was wondering if i can fit 37 or 38inch tsl boggers under it with the 4inch lift and it has had other spring work.please reaspond.
I'm running a 6" Susp Lift with 35" Ground Hawgs. You'd need at leat 6" to do 37" or more, and DEFINATELY need to change the Ring/Pinions front and rear. If you're running the old AMC rear end you'll probably need racing axle shafts, too, as they are weak and will fail with the larger tires. Good luck with your project!

try not to rev (accelerate) so much at the start..... it needs to make enough friction to move just slow it down a notch?

Put boards or rubber mats under the tire next time, just make sure their long so they don't slide out from underneath.

I'm not even sure who makes them anymore... I think Rancho is always a good bet, but not sure they do the old CJ's anymore. Good luck!
