  • Well at least he recognized his celebration was a mistake..

  • That's why during this speech he was praising Metcalf as being a great wrestler? And yeah doing a backflip isn't the most modest thing to do, but I mean he just won the national championship. Who wouldn't be excited? Excluding the emotionless Metcalf.

  • I think Darrion is a good statement for how wrestlers should all be. He's very modest about his winning, shows respect to opponents, and goes out there does his best no matter what. Something that I look up to

  • @ncstate817 I think that's only because he did a back flip during the last three seconds of the actual match, as a show boat. He is not a good statement for wrestlers. Nor does he know how to make a good statement, but that's ok he's there to wrestle not to give public speakings.

  • @ncstate817 i think your on crack modest? he did a backflip during the match. modest my ass

  • he went to my school, rahway h.s. great wrestling program, another national champ, antonio garay

  • haha oh he injured his shoulder. because tough wrestlers typically don't wrestle through injuries like that. i.e. broken hands, torn labrums (a shoulder injury that most prefer to work through than repair)... call it what ya want. he wouldn't wrestle metcalf again.

  • @ljwassel your a loser dc and metcalf would both hurt you. that is the dumbest thing i have ever heard. i have wrestled at iowa im not some putts who threw his 2 sense in pushing through an unhealed injury only cause greater injury. why compete at 50% when you have a year to heal and compete at 100% the next year not wrestling metcalf being a relief or not is another story. but dc did the right thing healing his shoulder he is a national champ more than u will ever be

  • caldwell had a better day THAT DAY than metcalf. if he was confident he could do it again, he'd have wrestled 149 in 2010 and done it again. but he was afraid of losing... just like when he backed out of the beat the streets tournament.

  • @ljwassel He didn't back out you dumbass he injured his shoulder.

  • @72533 yawn ,classic comeback after i slammed your punkass. now get metcalfs nuts out of your mouth you sound cum drunk

  • i cant stand darron caldwell.

  • @IowaHawks203 I guess not after he stomped a mudhole in metcalf. Why would you like him?

  • @toolmantooltime have you ever been rated number 1 at 149lbs nation wide didnt think so asshole

  • Both guys are phenominal athletes and deserve respect. I don't think Metcalf should be judged by one moment where he had a lapse of judgement when emotions were running high. I'm sure both are class acts. Darrion Caldwell deserves all the respect in the world for coming in as the underdog and prevailing.

  • @AndrewKo1218 Best post on here - and agree with you 110%. The rest of the posts that I've had to wade through are pure horseshit.

  • 6th place (Metcalf) vs. 3rd place (Caldwell) USA open last spring for those of you who were wondering if Caldwell's two previous wins were a fluke.

  • good pt. Darrion did his thing and it was great to see

  • NEW JERSEY.

  • what are you talking about metcalf should have won he got his butt kicked and darrion caldwell did amazing. and that was terrible sportsmanship at the end

  • he gave brent a match and brent was to much of himself, he didnt keep his composer.

  • CORRECTION: BRENT METCALF IS NOT HUMAN hahahahah

  • I Still believe Metcalf should have won

  • @Vivalabamrocks53 nahh. you can't really say caldwell cheated or did cheap stuff but he really didn't. caldwell just got a little excited at the end but you know he earned it. and plus im a huge metcalf fan

  • he is a beast, metcap was too cocky and that was his downfall

  • metcalf does not get cocky. he gets determined.

  • @gcleek10 danm strait

  • haha you sound dumb

  • America is built by badasses like Darrion Caldwell and Brent Metcalf

  • @rightwing52000 I completely agree

  • Amen Brother!!!

  • I just came from watching the video where Caldwell pinned Metcalf in a vicious spladle...holy Jesus!

  • that was bs, he wasn't stuck

  • Caldwell has Metcalf's number ..

  • @omisunra hahaha

  • 1) Caldwell did get carried away at the end of the match.

    2) Caldwell won that match fair and square, and not by a little, but by a lot.

    3) Metcalf understandably was upset, but this whole situation would not have happened if he had just scored his points.

  • Darrion was not shy, he was just nervouse he was never much to speak in from of a lot of people. He was though, a bit of a show off in High School

  • He seems like a nice guy though. He actually seems really shy?

  • what a beast. go NCState!

  • u a beast man=)

  • WOW you are fat

  • Comment removed

  • yes but u need your shoulder blades to be flat on the mat for a pin not your lower back lol

  • hey 72533. when he pinned him metcalf's lower back was flat on the mat. he was pinned

  • Everyone here condemning this guy needs to understand that he's without a doubt an incredible wrestler. Im not a fan of his attitude at all but you cant take away from his ability,

Metcalf lost fair and square, But Caldwells should have been a little more conserative with his celebrations and what not.

  • man hell naw if he won he won, it was his last year I guess he had to make it memorable

  • @wayneboi07 he has one more title to win actually.2011 NCAA champ Darrion Caldwell has a nice ring to it

  • either cause you were fat you have seen how big these national champs are for there weight

  • hwe just got finished a match. mosty would stutter after wrestling metcalf

  • actually he had an incredible upset, but was embarrassed by his little backflip thing and was scared of having to answer those questions.

Plus you watch any national champ interview, they are all gassed during the interview, (those sum more/less than others)

Tho I am a Hawk fan all the way, this loss will only push him to do better next year and every other year.

  • He beat you too?

  • ah ah eh eh

  • dudes a beast wish i could learn from him

  • its called being in shape and cutting weight

  • true man. this kids just a fattie. i weighed 100 in 7th.

  • pigieonzilla and 72533 what the hell are you talking about you said wat national champ takes a year off. look at jake herbert he took a year off and wast doging anyone you guys are just mad cause your pride and joy of iowa lost. DC is a beast i dont see anyone beatng him.

  • Crazy what some of you folks argue about. This was an exciting match, and Caldwell did well in this interview--including not blaming Metcalf for the contact at the end, since Caldwell is the one who was celebrating with his back turned to the returning national champ with time left on the clock. I like this guy and hope I get to see these two wrestle again.

  • no i was actually impressed until he faked the back injury. then i was indifferent, until he pulled that backflip and i completly believe he is a lazy asshole who does not deserve anything he has accomplished.

  • The back injury was brillant!!! He crushed him from start to finish. He did better than Metcalf at the free style Nationals too. I think he might pin Metcalf the next time they meet.

  • hes jus nervous

  • Wow. Take the year off.

Go up a couple of weight classes.

This guy is avoiding metcalf for next year.

  • sounds like he's dodgeing metcalf to me what NCAA champ takes a year off?????? makes no sense to me besides the fact that he knows what would happen if he met metcalf next year after metcalf works his ass off. and yea that first match where he pinned him.... worst call EVER i hope that ref was fired

  • @72533 sounds to me like you are a moron

  • @toolmantooltime sounds to me like you have no fucking life going back how many months to make a comment about something i said that long ago. get a life bro get off the computer go get yourself a gf and get out of the house. Im guessing your fat and single.

  • @72533 Oh you internet tough guys scare me. Yikes sounds to me like your butt hurt over metcalf getting thumped on

  • @72533 really? well since you checked my profile(which is scary) you will see by my only download you can see one of my 5 kids. anyway how long does it take you to post something on youtube? takes me seconds so much for the being on the net for hours a day. i am married and have 5 kids skippy. So maybe you ought to try and find a girl/boy(with your affection for metcalf i am guessing boy) or something and you won't be so lonely

  • i will say brent is a better wrestler BUT dc owns him after that frist lost i cant find on the books brent give up what 10 team points to dc i like brent is a wrestler but dc beat that man and did it with in the rules if brent have not so cocky more wrestling fans would like him to

  • Both are great wrestlers and I thank the two for the most exciting final of 2009. If the two meet again, who knows what will happen.

  • Hope you have the same type of season for Rutgers.

  • i def agree i was first row matside and he was faking. he basically called a 20 sec time out since when did wrestlers act like basketball players

  • Bringing my wrestling background was not to brag, it was to prove that everyone who say caldwell is a faker dont know anything about wrestling. If i wanted to brag i would have said something like "I am a 2x state champ. You pieces of shit couldnt do that because you are a waste of space!" but i didnt. You are the reason people dont like youtube as much as they used to, because people like you make comments that have nothing to do with the video just to be an ass. And you can have my mom.

  • lol he said he heard him moaning

  • ya i agree that DC needed that injury time BADLY cuz he is tired i hate when kids do that when someone does that to me i cross face the fuck out them when im on top cuz thats when kids do it, but the reason why metcalf looked bad and didnt look like himself because DC took him out of his game

  • NJ represent!

  • YEAH!!!!!!!!!!

  • CLASS.

  • Wow doriangray you snapped. Whats up with all this hatred??? Seriously.

  • Caldwell is amazing he beat Metcalf 2 times hes the better wrestler and everyone k nows it there was 4 sec left no way Metcalf woulda taken him down Metcalf couldnt take him down the whole match like that 4 sec matter hands down Caldwell is the best 149 pounder there is NJ BABY!!!

  • Southern? Last I knew Iowa was considered the midwest which is primarily north....

  • We are talking about NC state...

    North carolina

  • iowa is a joke in itself enuf said so go do meth with all ur meth labs

  • iowa isnt that great of a high school state.........college is all recruits form different states....iowa just always had good college programs...iowa wrestlers arnt anyhtign special.

  • iowa High School Wrestling is some of the best in the nation. I challenge you to find a harder state tournament.

  • OH, Pen, NJ,

  • new jersey ohio california penn new york

  • California.

  • Iowa's not that great of a highschool state? You've got to be kidding me, i wrestle in the Missisipi Valley Confrence and it's not only one of the toughest in Iowa but it's been said to be one of the toughest in the nation, and I know I wrestle in it. We might not be the best but there no way you can say Iowa's not that good.

  • Yesser! Little Hawkeye here but not by choice. If you do ur research my HS is the newest addition but it wasnt cause we were bad. we left the CIML as champs.

  • i agree.. ohio or new jersey are best, Ohio- Grahm (best wrestling school in the nation) also ohio has st. eds which is also a great school. and new jersey has blair academy... research those teams they are by far the best 3 in the nation

  • I wrestled in Ohio and I agree, but Davidson Mi, and Brandon FL ar also really good. THe thing is Eds, and Blair are Private schools thet recruite and there wrestlers are not always from there districs.

  • Blair is the best wrestling school in the nation, better then Grahm and St. Eds

  • did you graduate? or do you still got DHHS?

  • worddddd, from rahwayyyyyy

  • You the man DC!

  • I'm disapointed in Metcalf. He should have hit him a lot harder than he did. When you have a wrestler who lays on the mat and doesn't get up 30 seconds before he tries a round off back hand spring, you knock the guy off the platform. I expect Metcalf to hit him hard enough so the "athlete" doesn't get back up to get his hand raised.

  • He never said he had a back spasm. The commentator did. He probably had some pain and needed a moment to gather himself emotionally and pyschically. By the way he dominated, the match was never close.

  • NEWW JERUUUZZZZZZZ STAND UP!

  • Comment removed

  • Theres a reason he didnt wrestle at IOWA Brands doesnt have time for showboats. He worked hard for that win but quit wrestling the last period and jus ran around and stalled. Stalling is a losers desperate attempt to taste victory.

  • He actually scored a takedown in the last period and put more riding time on the clock. He did have a chance at shutting out Metcalf, his only mistake was letting Metcalf score but he still dominated the match. Four takedowns and riding time to one takedown that did not make a difference in the outcome of the match.

  • Watch the match again. He did nothing but back up for the last minute and his "back spasm" what a crock!! He was gassed and knew that if he didnt take a minute to catch his breath Metcalf was gonna jus keep on him and hammer on him. Thats how IOWA wrestles! Their #1 for a reason. They are the most intense team in the nation.

  • just shut up about iowa. you're stupid. you probably arent even from iowa. metcalf got pinned , then dominated in their second official match,. college sports are bullshit, they recruit from other states, if iowa was number one all ISU IOWA and UNI wrestlers would be from iowa, and they arent. i bet its not hard to be number 1 and number 3 when sanderson and brands are your coaches. WAR CALDWELL.

  • yes they are but that doesn't change the fact that caldwell beat metcalf.

  • A bit of a showboat but this guy is legit.

  • he's from nj fool.

  • he is from Rahway, NJ, i wrestled him my senior year of HS and got dominated. he is not an ignorant person whatsoever. he's obviously nervous and shy when it comes to public speaking, like A LOT of intelligent and functional people are. how can you gather that he's ignorant?

  • he is from new jersey and has always finsihed a big championship match with a backflip. he wrestled amazing and is one tough wrestler. good for him

  • He is not from North carolina he is from Rahway New jersey from my High School , he came to our wrestling room a couple times after he graduated but I never wrestled him but definently should have I wrestle his brother 171lb who is no where as good as him and is an asshole

  • he wrestled great but i think he faked the back spasms lol

  • thing is you can use injury time however you please... even if its just to get your wind back

  • Comment removed

  • that was for twisterbko

  • he out wrestled and outscored him in all 3 periods. thats why he won. dickehead.

  • true that metcalf got the break as well, but he's not the one who asked for it. metcalf is known to break his opponents because he outworks them. the fact that he still had gas left in the tank was a huge advantage, and caldwell took that away with the "timeout"

great match either way, caldwell was too good of a scrambler it seemed

  • oh yeah, what was the score again at the end of the first period? oh right.....

  • haha "it's not like he had a Gun and I have a knife"

    ... good call Darrion

  • The clock was on 0 when Caldwell started celebrating and for the injury time, he was sick. I don't care what anyone says i think Caldwell is truly a better wrestler then Brent Metcalf.

  • haha brent should've pushed him off the stage so he'll remember that its not over until the clock says 0...kinda like you guys defending his celebration....all 0's!

  • there was a 3 second tape delay on espn. the match was well over before the flip. even with the delay watch the tape in slow mo and u can see it says 0 way before the push.

  • Thank you I keep trying to tell people that and they just dont get it.

  • oh they get it.. but they refuse to admit it. they will defend metcalf to no end no matter what happened. he had a lapse in judgement and made a mistake. all he had to do was apologize and itd be over with.

  • He quit wrestling with 3 seconds left!! No matter how many points you have on the board you NEVER stop wrestling. Ill admit that he got a legitimate win, but the way he handled the end of the match he deserved to get his a** slammed.

  • you clearly dont know how to read. " There was a 3 second tape delay on espn." AND Time was expired even on ESPN's tape. watch the replay.

  • with that said if metcalf was up by 5 points in the last period he would have tried to tech him. there was a big enough gap in time for him to come back. there is always the time for a huge comeback it's happened before in wrestling and it will happen again. i just wish he would have not took the fake time and finished like a true champion. just fyi i dont care which one won in the end i just want to see a true champ

  • statement he just made " i knew he was tired just like i was, and i just needed to stay my ground in the third period and i did" he took the whole third period from metcalf because he had a huge lead he knew what he was doing not saying he wouldn't have won anyways but everyone knows mecalf destroys people in the third period and he took the time with a fake injury to take the period away from him in my eyes i think they need a different injury timer

  • Caldwell broke the code showing no integrity and disgraced wrestling by doing trying a back flip. Thats a High School thing, it doesn't belong at the college level.

  • I have a question? Does you back hurt?!?!?! haha...go hawks

  • if you are a wrestler of any level, you know just as i do there is a code for celebration. you flex, scream, shout, jump, fall down, hug your coach, etc etc...but you do not ozzie smith that shit on the mat with time remaining in the match! HE DESERVED WHAT HE GOT! brent metcalf is your role-model wrestler & should be an idol to every kid on a mat. he show class, hardwork, and dedication to an honorable sport. he wont cry about the loss like we do,cuz hes already back in the wrestling room!

  • firstly, metcalf cried by pushing caldwell

second of all, there is a code, BUT all wrestlers understand that that code is NULL AND VOID should you win the ultimate achievment, state title, ncaa title, world championship

Every wrestler commits themselves 100% to reaching that goal. you never celebrate any win because the goal is to be state champ, ncaa champ, world champ

but once you win that, you celebrate,

AND MANY GREAT WRESTLERS have done this, especially at the high level

  • he killed metcalf. theres not a doubt in anyones head that he is the better wrestler, and if there is they need to watch the match a couple more times until it sinks in

  • hello morons

EVER SEEN A BOXER RUN OUT OF GAS......SOMETIMES THEY CAN'T EVEN HOLD THERE AREMS UP....THEY ARE HELPLESS AND GET THE TAR BEAT OUT OF THEM. THIS IS THE PRICE YOU PAY WHEN YOU DONT SAVE A LITTLE FOR THE LAST ROUND.

CALDWELL GAMED THE SYSTEM. HE TOOK A FAKE INJURY TIMEOUT (WE KNOW IT WAS FAKE BECUASE OF THE BACKFLIP). METCALF DIDN'T NEED A REST, HE WASN'T DOING THE SUPERMAN MOVES CALDWELL WAS DOING.

I HAVE FOUGHT AND WRESTLED WITH NO GAS...IT IS A BAD FEELING. CALDWELL CHEATED.

  • caldwells awesome, great job

  • lets make this clear. YES, it was innapropriate for caldwell to start celebrating. and YES, it was totally out of line with metcalf pushing him: whether he denies it or not, he knew right after he did it that his actions were wrong, look at his face on the video. YES, caldwell did take an injury time out, and MAYBE he did fake it. but its wrestling, he's in the national championship, so WHY NOT take that minute and a half. It's not like he cheated. Caldwell won by scoring points.

  • For anyone who thinks Darrion's actions were out of the ordinary or disrespectful, search on youtube for his consi semis match from last year's NCAAs against J Churella. What does Churella do with 3 seconds left on the clock and how does Darrion react?

  • That's a great point.

  • Churella celebrated early and Caldwell clapped for him with respect...just in case anyone was wondering.

What would you do if your dreams just came true...celebrate, can't blame him for being emotional.

  • this guy is a class act

  • Spoken like a man that has never wrestled.

  • It wasn't that big an upset. He was undefeated and had a win over Metcalf. He might have been stomped in december, but he also might have been struggling with weight. Jaggers said the same thing about his early season struggles and he pwnd people this weekend. I hope Caldwell stays in the same weight class as Metcalf. It could turn out to be a great rivalry. I hope they meet in the US Open.

  • hey they're three matches no match what way you look at it.

Darrion is up 2 to 1 on Metcalf, but dont be shock if Metcalf finds a way to wrestle Darrion again in some way.

  • I'm glad i watched this. I'd never seen Caldwell speak before. He seems like a nice, respectful young man. I wish he would've waited 5 seconds before doing his flip and Metcalf was certainly wrong too. But Caldwell was very classy in letting Metcalf off the hook for his actions.

  • Caldwell seems like a nice, respectful young man??? HELLO MORON!!! Earth to moron!!! What he did towards the end of the match showed me everything I need to know about this fucking punk. He showed ZERO class, and is a fucking fool.

  • there isnt an excuse, metcalf is still a beast. Caldwell is good no doubt, and for that jerk saying im jealous of Caldwell is a Dumb**** i could care less who won, I just follow metcalf because he was from michigan. STYLES MAKE MATCHUPS THATS WHY RANKINGS MEAN SQUAT.metcalf is still the better wrestler but when those two matchup it just seems like its a match for metcalfs style. you all can argue till your blue in the face you know who's better.

  • This is ridiculous. Caldwell is a good guy. It isn't any reason to hate him because he beat Metcalf twice. He's been the better wrestler when they've wrestled more than once. He might not be the better wrestler, but when they've wrestled twice, he has. Logically speaking though, it would only make sense that Caldwell is better. He had one bad match where he was out of shape and nowhere near the top of his game. What is Metcalf's excuse for losing not once, but twice? Caldwell 2 Metcalf 1

  • nice

  • HAHAHA to all the DC haters i laugh at you all, you must not be wrestlers, Its a whole different ball game when the marbles are on the table, and DC proved that, when it was on the line he brought it , and truthfully dominated that match.

  • how many times do i have to say it METCALF HAS BEATEN CALDWELL BEFORE HE BEAT HIM IN NOVEMBER IN AN EXHIBITION 19-3

  • And Darrion Pinned Metcalf the last time they wrestled in an official match last year. Metcalf is 69-2 record in college, and guess who those two losses are to, Darrion Caldwell. The 19-3 exhibition loss means nothing copared to Darrions actual wins of pin 1:56 , and now decision 11-6.

  • question.

have you seen the pin? ridiculous call.

  • It was in an exhibition, dc said himself that that match meant nothing, he went out with the mindset that it didnt mean anything, so there was no point in going all out, this match he said he knew what was at stake and he knew how to beat him, last time he didnt do it, cause it didnt matter, this time, WHEN IT COUNTED he stayed with his gameplan and beat him

  • Well of course he will say it didnt matter...HE LOST!!!!! If he would have won he would have said it was the greatest thing ever! And he didnt bring it as much as you all think. I saw every single one of Metcafs matches and that final match he was not on his game...when he is he is unstopable. That pin was lucky as shit and was not a pin at all! The ref stuck his hand UNDER his shoulder to check...if his hand fit under then there was space=no pin.

  • is it on the books

  • DC is better? metcalf has teched him at least once.

pitiful... everyone in the country really knows who the better man is

  • spelllin?!

  • THANK YOU finally some one knows what im talking about

  • Teched in January is as important as losing a pre season exhibition football game. Maybe DC didn't feel like battling that day (certainly required to beat BM) and instaed used the opportunity to familiarize him with his style and more importantly, knew taht what mattered most was March 21st.

  • In January he was getting back at him for getting caught the year before...lets see what happens after he stole his national title!

  • The Champ!

  • funniest thing ever happened at the end of the match

  • i do believe the gentleman has obtained the dubious distinction of national champion and perhaps we should applaud his effort. bravo. yeah, and he also did the damn thing when he busst metcalfs azz. enough with the class warfare. we all bleed red baby.......just enjoy the match

  • actually, he speaks quite well

  • Perhaps you can first give us the deifnitions of Jealous and Pretentious. Then please,no dissertations, just a brief correlation between a young champion overcome with emotion andhis need to convey more eloquently for your pompous standards

  • below comment meant for Juliann 22 arreola

  • I agree thank you dfonic2007

  • I dont see the "upset" metcalf is 72-2 in college....both losses were to Caldwell. Mecalf is 2nd best plain and simple.

  • metcalf won all his matches by relatively large margins, and his only loss he "got caught" .

  • You don't get caught in the NCAA finals. You arebeaten by the superior techniques ofyour opponent. Anyone who gets this far is certainly not a fluke.

DO we applaud Gardner or say that Karelin lost by a fluke. Anyone (DC in this case) who gets this far has the ability to do what must be done. NO luck here.

  • Bring down a step or 2 huh? They won the national title so I dont think the school was brought down at all.

  • Not the prettiest win but its in the books now 22 titles you cant argue with TOTAL DOMINATION
