The Japanese version had it set that when you reached a certain level (i believe 10) you gain more stats than previously so instead of 3 you would gain 5 from my understanding of what I've read. and that would increase every 10 levels. in the English version you do not get that little boost thus leaving you a little crippled and forced to grind. the other Apprentices of course level to the Japanese settings. which makes them harder.
The dwarf has less attack power than Kamil. He has higher defense than Kamil, otherwise is very similar. There are also places you can only get to (treasure) with him.
Move the damn cursor off the screen. I shut this down from that annoyance at, let me check, 1:06 because of that.

You dont need a disc all you need is a snes emulator and the 7th saga rom to play
