We did this Haka because of our school pride and because Chris meant a lot to everyone at spc, that is all, not for any of the shit you were talking about
@Flash13FLy I worked with Hawea Vercoe & he was a great man. He was an influential man to both Maori/Non-Maori at Reporoa College & I doubt he would've discouraged a mark of respect no matter how "incorrect" it would seem. A great teacher like him encouraged not discouraged R.I.P Old Friend...

@freedom031 tautoko your comment totally. Whatever Marae/Kaumatua agree to on their turf is their bizo & obviously they are all good with it so why does everybody think they have a say? Mind your business haters & stop making Maori look like extremists as a culture! Mana Takahi on the Whaanau Pani wishes is disrespectful!!!
Whakawātea Haka is a farewell Haka which is usually done in song...but none the less if this Haka was that of his family's wishes they should be respected all the same. We can only hope for friends like these to gather together in tribute to our own lives when they are cut short.
ok everyone is allowed there beliefs mate an as sumone hu has gone to many tangi and seen many of my whanau sent off with a beautiful haka and sum of u guys r trying 2 tell me that what we did was disrespectful 2 our family we werent challenging our dead we were sending them off with our respect and all of it and to the boys in this haka truely amazing well done guys
How can anyone find this disrespectful, clearly people don't know what the haka stands for, furthermore tributes to things people enjoyed in their life should also be accepted as good
i actually have tears in my eyes, and I'm amazed any of you guys broke down to see your friend leave and never see him again. Shame on the guys who don't like the video, this is the best tribute somebody can do for a friend, kudos to you, guys!!
I cant believe people are giving the guys that did the haka grief on here!! the family of chris clearly thought this was touching and a great performance in honour and memory of his life! i personally feel that was a moving and great send off and sure chris would have been proud too!! despite how upset these guys must have been they stuck to it and put on a great haka for chris! great effort and moving tribute if u ask me!! ( im from Wales )
to those who say that its disrespectful should be ashamed of yourselves..go take your stupid facts somewhere else, let the poor kid say goodbye to his mate.. i couldnt give a damn whether the meaning of the haka was appropriate of not . To be honest ,he could of just sung a stupid song for all i care,at the end of the day his heart was in the right place...
Truly awesome bro. Must have been hard for you boys to do that especially as the coffin was passing. If my send off is half of what you boys did for your friend.....I'll be happy!
bro dont listen to what all of them are saying u guys did great, dont listen to what all of the guys are saying about "you shouldnt do a haka at a funera"l and all of that shit, a haka is one of the best tributes to farewell a mate and everyone should respect that !!!
So moving. I cried. What a wonderful tribute for your friend. Cannot understand how anyone could be 'disrespected' by this - they clearly don't know what respect is.
a warrior is a warrior is a warrior - there is no apologizing for the loss of a brother. how you choose to honor him is your choice - nobody can take that from you and you are not responsible for the responses as a result and you owe no single soul an explanation. don't ever back down from that. you did good by him and that's all that matters.
bra dont worry the haka is a sign of respect doing it at the funeral is a great place to do it, so dont listen to these haters they dont know shit bra and sorry for your lost. 5 of my close friends died in my life and it sucks but atleast you know they in a better place now yeah.
To much bro, doing the haka is one of the best tributes to do for a tangi.
Ko te haka, e pa ana ki tenei kaupapa, he mea whakarangatira ki te tupapaku. Kaua e aro ki te hunga kore mohio ki enei mea. Ki to ratou pohehe he mea o te pakanga noa iho. E he! ka tae te tuku hei whakarangatira, hei whakapiki mana, whakapiki wairua hoki! Mo te whakatau me te poroaki hoki.

To the haters, you guys obviously don't know anything about mana.. They are sending their friend off.. The haka gives the friends and family and the one that has gone on to a better place peace and security..
Ok this obviously was a guy all those boys knew, they must have been in mourning as well! The family requested it and there shouldn't be anything wrong with it.. The only thing I think went wrong is the timing... Maybe they could have waited until he was laid to rest before performing the haka.. But if that was part of my culture I'd be honoured that they did that for me! Dont hate on the boys that isn't fair.
Hay to everyone who has commented on this page. I am leading the haka in this video and am terribly sorry to who ever is disrespected by the haka. @sExCsAmOaN school haka? Is it that most school/college(or organization) in NZ have their own haka team? Sorry if i sound ignorant or anything but i am a bit confused here.
@sExCsAmOaN dont apologise for anything. Your friend knows you werent challenging him. If the parents ask you to perform a Haka for their son then you do it. It would have made your friend and his parents proud to see his brothers performing the Haka for him. Thank you for taking a part in Maori cutlutre. I think you boys did a great job
@sExCsAmOaN You definitely showed pride in the haka and the love for your friend. Dont worry what others think. It was well done :)....Continue to hold that pride in your heart in honour of you loss :D....I thought it was awesome
Bro dont be worried about what others have to say. You did your school proud and it was nice of the family to ask for such an honor. Im korean and I ve done heaps of hakas lead by my friends who are Maori and they said the Haka is a challenge and an honor for it to be done. You wont have made any disrespects if you believed that you have done it correct and have given it 110% (re: Stephen Huinga, my bro down there from the coast but lives it up in Aucks.) . Thats all that matters.
do you no how i see it!! this haka aint about Tikanga an they are by no way Challenging the dead!! this is about them farewelling there friend! an there are obviously Kaumatua present while they are doing this haka so i think that you are just being a no it all Maori who lives by tikanga a bit to much because yes we need to be stead fast in the ways of old which involves compassion so dont be whakahihi..
No need to disrespect someones attempt at the haka. We as Maori are and should be proud that someone does it. Like a waiata there is NEVER a wrong time for one, same as Haka.
If their Mauri and Mana compells them to 'Haka it' than that is OK!
No, but under whose Kawa does it say that a haka is or isnt warranted to honour those loved and often performed by loved ones? And by who I mean you and anyone else.
@skankibounca what do u mean under whose kawa?...its all maori !
we all have our own tikanga and all that just as long as we dont forget noT TO CHALLENGE THE DEAD THATS IT...AND AS LONG AS NO ONE TAKES THEIR OWN TIKANGA ON THE MARAE. ITS ALWAYS BEEN LIKE THAT, AND I DUNNO WHO STARTED THINKING THAT IT WAS OKAY TO HAKA TO THE TUPAAPAKU, ONLY IF ITS HAKA TANGI, THIS ONE SURE AINT, LISTEN TO THE WORDS.
challenging the dead WTF??? Looks to me as though a bunch of school friends want to express the way they feel to their dead friend and in respect of them and that fact makes it righteous! Thats not up to anyone to tell them whats right or wrong dude.
lmao...well their really disrespecting their dead friend u idiot, havent you been taught properly off the elders on the marae!. who ever told you that it is RESPECTFUL to perform the Haka to a dead friend is stupid, you have got your thinking all wrong, in other words, you never fucck around with this stuff. Haka Tangi is apropriate though, but Haka, which is to challenge the dead!, Kao!. i wish u people get it right,
Well Ive spent most of my life working and helping on my Marae. Yet we've had plenty Haka performed at Tangi and we respect what people wish to do, More righteous to respect what people feel they want to do, than to try and stop, which is what we were taught. You sound like one of these Maori whom have just taken up a course and wish to expound all your new knowledge with us... fell free to e hoa.
OH YEAH?...TELL THAT TO MY GREAT NANNY WHO TAUGHT ME THE PROPER WAYS. SHE COMES FROM ALL OVER, AND ONE THING SHE TOLD ME WAS THAT NO MATTER WHAT TIKANGA , KAWA WAS ON THE MARAE. NEVER HAKA TO THE DEAD. YOU ONLY TAKE THEIR MANA AWAY....I HAVE PITY ON YOUR TUUPUNA BECAUSE IT SOUNDS AS IF THE TIKANGA ON YOUR MARAE HAS BEEN CHANGED. NOT GOOD, NOT GOOD.@skankibounca
no, your tupuna would be telling you to go learn how to speak maori properly, and its spelt Tiko* not Teko...Get your reo Rangatira right boy!.
you idiots have lost the ways of the old what a shame....Haka is to challenge. why challenge the dead when they cannot get back up and challenge back? damn stupid...but its appropriate if it was actual Haka Tangi. People need to learn the meaning of haka and get it right..
@Flash13FLy every tribe has different protocol , just because one tribe believe its wrong doesn't mean the same goes for everyone, iv seen heaps of haka at tangi ,when hawea vercoe was killed his students did sum mean haka while his body was being carried out. ......times have changed, every iwi is different, thats why so many disagree with what ur saying.
@sayWotFooL yeah times has changed but doesnt mean that we can change the way of our tupuna, haka and haka Tangi are different....Haka is to challenge somebody dont matter what iwi you come from, and yes i know that theres different kawa, different tikanga on different marae and areas , but you still dont challenge the dead, you may think that doing haka is good, but it aint. and i was at hawea vercoe's Te Ra nehu kei Te teko, because hes my second cousin. anyways, learn whats right!
@Flash13FLy If Haka is to challenge, why then is it considered disrespectful when other teams challenge back. Are only certain nations allowed to challenge and the rest have to just accept it, its very confusing. I've watched plenty of Haka as celebrations for retiring players etc. I'm sorry for my ignorance and perhaps you're arguing about a particular type of Haka but the intentions of the boys in the clip are clearly good. I don't see why you can't see that and move on.
@DaddyCalls okay, haka is to challenge. and a challenge is a challenge. who said its disrespectful to challenge back, thats what your suppose to do, its like someone trying to get the last word in an arguement right. anyways, these young men may mean well, but it doesnt mean to say what they are doing is correct . People need to get things right before they do things especially in Te Ao Maori. there are certain haka that people need to be careful with Respect it and know wht its about thts all
@Flash13FLy bro thats is utter bullshit that you do not haka the dead.a haka is also a way of expressing how you feel and letting grief go. i think you need to get your meaning of haka right before taking the mana away from someone that is doing such a special thing for their mate
no i wouldnt have to walk on to a marae and stop them, because they would have already been stopped by our kaumaatua u fool. get it through your RORO and stop speaking out your NONO. dont you know that it makes our kaumaatua sad when they see fukkin youngbucks challenging the dead?. it hurts them to know that our generation is losing the way of our forebearers. losing the way spreads by people like yourself.. CHALLENGING THE DEAD WILL SURE LET HINENUITEPO BITE YOU IN THE ASS.
A haka done at a tangihanga is not a challenge against the dead...its a challenge done against Hinenuitepo...against the underworld...come on Maori, get ur mohio sorted out!!!
@ urikohu yeah so you think? hinenuitepo? when did our ppl start challenging hinenuitepo?. its only been recent that most of our ppl think its ok to haka at funeral, get it right!. since when was that part of tangihanga?.its allrite to do haka tangi thats diffrnt, but not these sort. leave that for challenges!our tuupuna b turning in ther graves. its time to get it right!
weve always challenged hinenuitepo u fool!!! wasnt that the whole point of Maui trying to conquer death by entering into Hinenuitepo? get ur Maori rite boi!!! those stories were created by our tipuna...its all in the history man!!! wat a DUMB ASS!!!! MENA KAREKAU KOE E MATATAU TIKA TONU NEI I NGA KORERO WHAKAREREA MAI E NGA TIPUNA, ME TAKI HOIHOI!!! HAHAHA
its not right. and out of all people. i thought U would have known better, your from tuuhoe!!. but you are brainwashed! into thinking its pai to challenge HINENUITEPO!.dont muck around with her. who told u that its alright to challenge th dead?. an u should take a look at our history, our ppl did NOT haka the tupaapaku , they only did HAKA TANGI which is appropriate, ask our kaumatua today. im from mataatua an when ppl do haka at tangi, our kaumatua get mad. its time we learn!
yes i kno why you do the things you do, you are all just a bunch of fukin young bucks. thats why....i wish that you would get it thru your head that it aint okay chap. and im tuuhoe hard as well as ngati awa, MATAATUA all the way but, go ask our kaumaatua, they wouldnt be impressed. i hate seeing them sad because our ppl have lost it. now u go do your little haka to yourself.
Akona mai matou i o matou paapaa, mohio tonu koe ka hakahaka haere e o iwi e rua ki runga i nga marae katoa o Tuhoe me Ngati Awa, kua whakamarama atu ahau ki a koe he aha tatou te maori e haka ki runga i nga marae i te wa o te tangihanga, kaare ano koe kia whakamarama mai ki ahau mo te take me aukati i nga haka ki runga i nga marae...tena nei...

we all have our own tikanga and all that just as long as we dont forget noT TO CHALLENGE THE DEAD THATS IT...AND AS LONG AS NO ONE TAKES THEIR OWN TIKANGA ON THE MARAE. ITS ALWAYS BEEN LIKE THAT, AND I DUNNO WHO STARTED THINKING THAT IT WAS OKAY TO HAKA TO THE TUPAAPAKU, ONLY IF ITS HAKA TANGI, THIS ONE SURE AINT, LISTEN TO THE WORDS.
Flash13FLy 2 years ago
challenging the dead WTF??? Looks to me as though a bunch of school friends want to express the way they feel to their dead friend and in respect of them and that fact makes it righteous! Thats not up to anyone to tell them whats right or wrong dude.
skankibounca 2 years ago
lmao...well their really disrespecting their dead friend u idiot, havent you been taught properly off the elders on the marae!. who ever told you that it is RESPECTFUL to perform the Haka to a dead friend is stupid, you have got your thinking all wrong, in other words, you never fucck around with this stuff. Haka Tangi is apropriate though, but Haka, which is to challenge the dead!, Kao!. i wish u people get it right,
Flash13FLy 2 years ago
Well Ive spent most of my life working and helping on my Marae. Yet we've had plenty Haka performed at Tangi and we respect what people wish to do, More righteous to respect what people feel they want to do, than to try and stop, which is what we were taught. You sound like one of these Maori whom have just taken up a course and wish to expound all your new knowledge with us... fell free to e hoa.
skankibounca 2 years ago

@Flash13FLy what a load of teko thats what my tupuna would be saying
sayWotFooL 5 months ago
@sayWotFooL
no, your tupuna would be telling you to go learn how to speak maori properly, and its spelt Tiko* not Teko...Get your reo Rangatira right boy!.
you idiots have lost the ways of the old what a shame....Haka is to challenge. why challenge the dead when they cannot get back up and challenge back? damn stupid...but its appropriate if it was actual Haka Tangi. People need to learn the meaning of haka and get it right..
Flash13FLy 5 months ago
@Flash13FLy every tribe has different protocol , just because one tribe believe its wrong doesn't mean the same goes for everyone, iv seen heaps of haka at tangi ,when hawea vercoe was killed his students did sum mean haka while his body was being carried out. ......times have changed, every iwi is different, thats why so many disagree with what ur saying.
sayWotFooL 5 months ago 3
@sayWotFooL yeah times has changed but doesnt mean that we can change the way of our tupuna, haka and haka Tangi are different....Haka is to challenge somebody dont matter what iwi you come from, and yes i know that theres different kawa, different tikanga on different marae and areas , but you still dont challenge the dead, you may think that doing haka is good, but it aint. and i was at hawea vercoe's Te Ra nehu kei Te teko, because hes my second cousin. anyways, learn whats right!
Flash13FLy 5 months ago
@Flash13FLy If Haka is to challenge, why then is it considered disrespectful when other teams challenge back. Are only certain nations allowed to challenge and the rest have to just accept it, its very confusing. I've watched plenty of Haka as celebrations for retiring players etc. I'm sorry for my ignorance and perhaps you're arguing about a particular type of Haka but the intentions of the boys in the clip are clearly good. I don't see why you can't see that and move on.
DaddyCalls 4 months ago
@DaddyCalls okay, haka is to challenge. and a challenge is a challenge. who said its disrespectful to challenge back, thats what your suppose to do, its like someone trying to get the last word in an arguement right. anyways, these young men may mean well, but it doesnt mean to say what they are doing is correct . People need to get things right before they do things especially in Te Ao Maori. there are certain haka that people need to be careful with Respect it and know wht its about thts all
Flash13FLy 4 months ago
@Flash13FLy bro thats is utter bullshit that you do not haka the dead.a haka is also a way of expressing how you feel and letting grief go. i think you need to get your meaning of haka right before taking the mana away from someone that is doing such a special thing for their mate
0231Nati 1 month ago
Put it this was ye of small brain matter. Would you walk on to a marae and try to stop these people? You'd get sat down by your kaumatua.
skankibounca 2 years ago
no i wouldnt have to walk on to a marae and stop them, because they would have already been stopped by our kaumaatua u fool. get it through your RORO and stop speaking out your NONO. dont you know that it makes our kaumaatua sad when they see fukkin youngbucks challenging the dead?. it hurts them to know that our generation is losing the way of our forebearers. losing the way spreads by people like yourself.. CHALLENGING THE DEAD WILL SURE LET HINENUITEPO BITE YOU IN THE ASS.

its not right. and out of all people. i thought U would have known better, your from tuuhoe!!. but you are brainwashed! into thinking its pai to challenge HINENUITEPO!.dont muck around with her. who told u that its alright to challenge th dead?. an u should take a look at our history, our ppl did NOT haka the tupaapaku , they only did HAKA TANGI which is appropriate, ask our kaumatua today. im from mataatua an when ppl do haka at tangi, our kaumatua get mad. its time we learn!
Flash13FLy 2 years ago
