  • OpenSUSE is great, i installed it and KDE works much faster on this than in Kubuntu. =)

  • Why do windows always open in the top left of the screen and not the middle :0

  • Damn that thing is running slow! What's your specs?

  • @kalash156

    4gigs ram, dualcore 3ghz, nvidia7800gtx

  • @Linux4UnMe :O

  • In your review you said that LibreOffice and OpenOffice are pretty much the same thing. Actually, LibreOffice is way faster then OpenOffice on my my PC. OpenOffice Linux release pretty grows....

  • @DemocraWatch

well, LibreOffice took OpenOffice and added to it... so it is essentially the same but with modifications and new features... LibreOffice has grown in the last year or so while OpenOffice hasn't as much ;)

  • @DARKZLLZ

    nice. enjoy :D

  • I tried OpenSUSE recently, loved it when I could install XBMC, PlayOnLinux, Handbrake through the software manager. With Mint and Ubuntu, I had to add the repos and use command line to install it all. Only problem I had with SUSE was trying to setup samba file shares. Ubuntu was just click share, prompt install samba and I was file sharing. I really like the look of KDE, is SUSE the best KDE distro around?

  • @kiwicanuck1973

you could of just searched for the .deb and right clicked/installed it as you can get a deb for just about

    any program ;)

yer Suse + Kde if you don't care about the politics behind it's ownership/development, otherwise mandriva 2011 is going to be a force to be reckoned with and PcLinuxOs kde rocks

  • I have used Ubuntu for a while (still a total novice) and I am currently downloading Suse 11.4 and I think I may have bitten off more than I can chew. . lol.

  • KDE + GNOME and in the end just KDE...

  • what package manager does it use?

  • @grandmasterhack

    zypper..... Yast2 frontend

  • @Linux4UnMe is it easier to create packages for?

  • @grandmasterhack

to create packages for suse? dunno never tried

  • @Linux4UnMe sigh, this a very hard task for a game developer. i think think package management is the biggest problem that prevents developers from publishing games on linux.

  • @grandmasterhack

not really... alot of games are packaged in .run or .sh files which works on any Linux distro. The problem is that Most Game developers don't want to port games to OpenGl. It is easier to for game developers to create games for standard DirectX/Direct3d

  • @Linux4UnMe sorry for asking so much but how would i find out how to do this then? i searched "package in .run file" and i got microsoft and java tutorials.

  • @grandmasterhack

no probs... um... I am a little confused what you are asking me... My last comment was referring to how you can get .run and .sh files on linux which run across all distibutions which alot of games for linux come as... obviously if you downloaded it from the website...Not Package Manager... or sometimes they come in .zip and you extract it to a file and play from there...

  • where is Internet Explorer? does it have msn?

  • @vranakkk I know what you mean, but seriously.... who need bloated IE... Even if they made that open source and completely free, I wouldn't use it. The new Firefox 4.0 is not bad. But not always quite as fast as Chromium. I need both for different tasks.

  • Does Microsoft investing into Linux say something about the future of SUSE or of Microsoft...

  • @veggiefella

embrace, extend, extinguish comes to mind.... although they don't realise that it will just get forked... then again, they have aquired patents from Novell/Attachmate, so it wouldn't suprise me if they attacked the Linux Kernel as a whole in the future.... who knows... They play dirty... they are up to something....

  • @Linux4UnMe What I think about is that Microsoft is beginning to view Linux as a threat. When developers that have been supporting Windows and Mac are moving to develop for Linux (rumours that Adobe intends to develop Photoshop for Linux), Microsoft has to take notice. There is still a long road ahead for Linux to take serious root, but it is coming, especially when whole governments, educational systems and enterprise level business are moving to Linux.

  • I would also like to add that Mac, Android etc... are the gateways into developers beginning to port mainstream apps for Linux. It just makes sense, if Linux does become mainstream and the mainstream developers have not done anything to address Linux, their days will be numbered. Meanwhile open source applications continue to gain ground. I do believe that it is up to the Linux community to contribute for enhanced development, but that will come.

  • @veggiefella

    agreed

  • What was your Host OS? Kubuntu?

  • @6250valtra

    arch

  • Well I watched it again.. It's not that bad. It seems like you just needed to run through it as quick as possible. I think my problem is just that I have never used the KDE version before, actually I've never used KDE at all, so I just needed to see more of it to get a better idea. Don't mind me man, keep doing what your doing. I just talk smack sometimes when I don't get it the way I want it.. No, your video is quite entertaining actually..

  • @Manofheart777

    cool

  • Well I don't mean to make you feel bad about the video, I'm not ungrateful that you even made the video. What threw me off is that it seemed as if you where using the system for the first time and barely discovering what it has. It threw me off because I just thought, how can I trust this guy to give a good review if he's barely learning the system. I would say, just use the system for a while and when you make the review, go over the points like you've used it enough to know about it good orbad

  • @Manofheart777 it's ok, I don't get upset over comments,I am not a fairy. lol

Anyways, I have used Suse as my main for 2 years in the past and I am on and off between it and other distros. You havn't told me what I got wrong (if anything) or if there was anything significant that I didn't mention about the system which matters to a person who hasn't used it before and fit it all in to a 14min video after the Other things I covered, Lack of enthusiasm maybe, but I'm not a sales guy for suse. lol

  • If you do a review video, learn your material before you show it off so we can get a good idea if its any good. this is too shoty for me

  • @Manofheart777

fair criticism... but you didn't mention what it is that I got wrong or didn't know about?

tell me what you think that was then I "might" take your opinion on board

  • Is the dvd also live or are just the cds?

  • @KladionicaCity

from memory.... the Dvd's are just the installer version

  • openSUSE is not owned by microsoft you know, and as far as the license goes attachmate has most of the cards there and they seem to be leaving things alone with the developers.

Microsoft does not really own attachmate from what I know

  • @DancingMadRB3

I know. It is Sarcasm since Microsoft was involved in funding Attachmate to Buy Novell

  • is suse microsoft doing its embrace extend extinguish tactics?

  • @aaaaaaaaaaaaaaa78815

Who Knows at this point..... it is a big ?

  • @Linux4UnMe microsoft released a video celebrating linux's 20th birthday. perhaps they want to be like red hat and have finally realised their business model encourages piracy

  • I'm not going to Ubuntu 11.04 because of Unity, and have been looking around for a distro to call my home. I think OpenSuse just earned it, because Kubuntu rubs me the wrong way, and I know KDE should look better. And indeed, Suse looks amazing. Hopefully the learning curve isn't horrible compared to Ubuntu.

  • @sabombardonist

nah its pretty easy to learn man

  • @sabombardonist Yast kde integeration is damn ugly.

  • @sabombardonist you can run ubuntu 11.04 without unity, its an option at startup. I'm doing it right now.

  • @jeff30458

Until 11.10 comes out and it's bye bye Gnome Classic... Hello Unity ;)

  • The search function in the package manager looks pretty neat!

  • @Dannie92

    yeah it's not bad ;)

  • Hi, just watched the review and here's my thoughts on OpenSuse.

A bit of background - I've been in I.T for almost 30 yrs both on the hardware and develpment/software sides, though I havn't touched linux for about a decade. So I have adequate tech skills but very limited (recent) experience with linux.

As such, I've been trialing various linux distros for about a month now on a dedicated box I plan on using as both a server and occasional desktop box.

  • @AlaCarcuss

My requirements included both RAID and LVM support. Naturally, as the most popular linix distro I started with ubuntu 10.10 (alternate install, due to raid and lvm). I also tested extensivley - Linux Mint 10, Mandriva & Pardus (all latest releases).

To cut a long story short, I don't think you were enthusiactic enough in you praise for OpenSuse. This is the latest distro I've tested and frankly, IMHO it leaves all the others in the dust in almost every department!

  • @AlaCarcuss

Suse is good... and your right... the installer is great etc.... Kde is great on Suse... as For their Gnome implementation It doesn't come Close to Mint (in my opinion) Out of the Box experience is not as good as Mint, Package management (in the gui) still leaves alot to be desired (slow) Compared to Mint/buntu. The only thing I am impressed with is the installer, Kde, Yast, repos and tumbleweed. Not enough for me to be overly enthusiastic about. Been using Suse 4 years.......

  • @AlaCarcuss

The install process was a thing of beauty and offered everthing I needed right out of the box (raid/lvm etc.). Setting up things like samba and my hard drives was a breeze. All my hardware was detected and there was almost nothing left for me to do apart from the auto update at the end. To top it all off OpenSuse has the best default desktop (both the KDE 4 & Gnome 4 versions) I have yet seen.

Ubuntu was reasonably good too, but a distant second to OpenSuse in my books.

  • @AlaCarcuss

Simply the most professional packaging of linux I've yet seen.

Oops! Of course I meant Gnome 3 in my post above lol :-)

  • Man, you have the worst pc I ever saw. I know you have to load gtk into the memory before starting firefox, but I have not to wait that time to browse the internet since 2002...

  • @bpiero

I have 2 words for you

    "Virtual Machine"

  • Open suse is basicaly the Beta software test OS so that it have firefox beta is quiet obvious

  • Is openSUSE by Microsoft and Novell? Or just Novell?

  • @JeremyPassarelli

hehehe. Well.it is hard to tell at the moment.... Novell sold Suse to Attachmate which was funded via Microsoft and Attachmate gave Suse patents to Microsoft.... so the real question is... who really owns Suse? Attachmate or Microsoft?

  • @Linux4UnMe

I'm guessing MS will finally be good at coding. Ctrl+C and Ctrl+V do wonders!!!

  • @Linux4UnMe This is BS. Attachmate is corporation; it's not "funded by Microsoft". Novell sold some patents to a consortium in which Microsoft is a member. One has absolutely nothing to do with the other and the patents have to do with office software, not Linux. So the real question is only a question because people love to espouse conspiracy theories about Microsoft like it's still 1990.

  • @duncreg

Attachmate did not have the Money to buy out Novell. That is Clear. Attachmate had to get 2.2 Billion to buy out Novell. That is clear. Microsoft got a Large amount of patents from the Novell/Attachmate deal and states that they will sell its 25 percent share of the patents on to Attachmate and retain only a license to the portfolio. Microsoft have not admitted funding, but they have admitted getting patents. One can be naive or add 2 + 2 together

  • @Linux4UnMe Attachmate is a 30+year old corporation that has acquired many other products and has over 65,000 customers. How can it be "clear"? It's either a fact or you're making it up (unless you have the financial docs to prove it). . Microsoft is publicly traded and can't just hand Attachmate cash. In fact, if it sells patents to Attachmate it's COSTING Attachmate money!!! You're "adding 2+2" is exactly what I accused you of: making up conspiracy theories to smear openSUSE.

  • @duncreg

and Attachmate is a Private company and are not required to inform the public of it's business dealings... which is why Microsoft are doing what they are doing through them. You can call it a Conspiracy theory if you like.... but conspiracy theories only arise when people don't tell the truth...... Maybe I am wrong... Maybe Not. Microsoft decline to comment on their dealings with the Novell/Attachmate deal.... But they admit they have aquired Suse Patents. That part is Admitted by them

  • @Linux4UnMe

Why do you think that this Deal went under investigation??

I am not smearing Suse..... I have said time and time again that Suse is a Quality Distribution, one of the best...... I say that in This video..... But the fact is... Microsoft is involved in the dealings with Novell/Attachmate... Read the news.... We don't know the full details yet.... We only know they have aquired a large number of Suse patents. Did you atleast know that part? Or dismissing it as a conspiracy?

  • @duncreg

Mate there are Several Microsoft-led consortium of vendors and Attachmate is one of them. Google the words "bloomberg attachmate-seeks-1-09-billion-in-new-loans-to-fund-acquisition"

    and also

"Novell acquisition delayed by DoJ patent investigation"

If you still think that nothing fishy is going on... then I won't bother debating my point with you anymore.... Just Dismiss the facts and Call it a Conspiracy

  • @Linux4UnMe It's not a conspiracy so much as it's a reading comprehension problem. CPTN Holdings LLC wants to buy the patents, of which Microsoft is a stakeholder. Attachmate is buying everything else. The sale is held up while the DoJ investigates the patent sale. The investigation has nothing to do with Attachmate, and Microsoft does not own or control Attachmate. Period. Now I use openSUSE, but it's sub-sub-1% market share. Why would Microsoft give a $%$ about it? Think about it.

  • @Linux4UnMe All this FUD is getting ridiculous and you're helping to spread it. In a forum an openSUSE user wanted to know if other people were having problems playing a video file type, because he was beginning to suspect that Microsoft may have paid Novell to introduce a bug to ruin desktop multimedia experiences to drive users to Windows! That's the level of crazy going on, and you're theories-without-facts encourage it.

  • @Linux4UnMe Lots of Linux users still live in a pre-1990 world: The Berlin Wall is still up, the Soviet Union still exists, and Microsoft is still led by Bill Gates before he got his soul back, in a pre-cell phone, pre-Internet, pre-ARM world. It's 2011 and Microsoft doesn't give a $#%@ about desktop Linux's 1% market share. Ballmer lies awake at night worrying about tablets, iPhones, ARM and the cloud, not openSUSE. It's time to let it go. If Atari & Amiga users can let it go, you can too.

  • @Linux4UnMe Something to note about the Attachmate deal, it that it wasn't only MS, a few other big players were involved including apple.

  • @triplesquarednine

    yes, and Oracle

  • microsoft suse lol! : )

  • @locanix

LOL yep. Pretty much is now....... the pawns have been put in place............. if ya know what I mean ;)

  • Nice Review - thanks.

  • @OmenX13

    thanx ;)

  • Make sure to review Fusion linux... it's a big win for Fedora.

  • @Justgoodvids

funny you say that, I was testing fusion in a VM yesterday and thinking about it.

Looks like a LinuxMint in the Fedora world..... like.... Fusion is to Fedora as Linux Mint is to Ubuntu.

  • @alanstryder

it is probably the best Kde distro out there alongside Mandriva.

For newer packages, you should be able to go to the BuildService and find packages in "factory" which are newer

  • FINALLY!! Someone who has the balls to come out a with a review of OpenSUSE 11.4. I downloaded yesturday and upgraded my 11.3 systems with it. It is very stable and beautiful as always, although the Firefox BETA is kinda stupid... YaST is alright, but thank you for the review! LONG LIVE SUSE!!

  • @74ryanwolf

    hehehe no probs. thanx mate

  • I have a question :

how can I change in KDE the system tray arrow to expand on left not up? The arrow between the volume icon and the clock down in the right...

Its really annoying for me, I like it better the way it was ...

  • @scorici

do you mean moving the taskbar left and right? shorten and lengthen? if so, you just click on the

cashew at the very end of the panel and there is a blue and green arrow at the ends that you can move

  • @Linux4UnMe I mean the hidden icons in system tray , they appear as a menu now instead of appearing in the toolbar like it use to be.

  • @scorici

    ohhhhhhhhhhh I get ya.

I don't think that can be changed that I am aware of.........

  • I was in the process of downloading this, but had wireless issues with 11.3, got stuck with the kwallet and knetworkmanager password loop, and there was auto-partitioning errors when dual booting in some older versions, so wasnt sure...

  • @lindsaymobil22

really? Can't say I tried 11.3 with wifi but I never got the auto partition errors you speak of..... then again I can't remember if i installed it to the metal or a VM. I use to run Suse as my main distro but that was from 11.0 -11.2 if memory serves me correct

  • i cant use linux anymore,it doesnt support the multitouch of my trackpad,on my hp dv7-4040sp,if i put two fingers in it the mouse goes mental, and i love linux,i just dont get why it doesnt work with it,and why there is no synaptics drivers for linux.

  • @linuxpowerification I'm using Arch now and I know for sure that there are synaptics drivers.

  • @iLoGiiKzv0

im not sure for this trackpad, because it doesnt have imdependent button, its just like a giant button. But i cant find synaptics drivers for linux anywhere,on their site there is only for windows, this sucks.

  • @linuxpowerification the drivers are not on their site, they are in the repository of your distro. and if you use a distro that comes with a GUI, it's pretty likely to have the drivers pre-installed. they just don't support multi-touch functionality out of the box.

  • @CedsHouse

i tried to install ubuntu 10.10 to get rid of windows 7,but i cant put the touchpad to work properly,if i keep my finger at the left button(its just a mark on the touchpad, not an independent button) ,and move my other finger to scroll a page down, the mouse goes nutts, and jumps everywhere on the screen, and that only happend if i put two fingers on the touchpad.

  • @linuxpowerification

ah i see you have a few responses. I would suggest posting your problem in the Ubuntu Forums where their are alot of other people who might of had the same issue as you and would be willing to help you out

  • @CedsHouse that was supposed to mean "if your distro comes with a GUI /by default/".

  • @linuxpowerification

hhmmmm I havn't got experience in this area as I don't have a laptop. I know Linux has Multitouch support

built into the kernel but it is still very early with driver support. Have you tried it in Ubuntu? Probably more chance it is supported..........
