Having no internet, and in a 3rd world country with no one else around me with the same game, it was all me. Clearing each level was so much fun. It definitely is one of the best games ever made. You missed alot of hidden powers, but thats ok, you're playing after 20 years... i spent alot of time with shinobi :)

The life bar goes up every 50 thousand points. Plus on the junkyard the second part of it you can pick up lives easily on the first conveyor belt there is 2x life in the bottom corner of it so just pick it up and lose it and repeat it. This was even more entertaining with youtube's 'transcribe audio' option turned on. It transcribed one line of dialogue as "but your life neutered respect to the original".
FYI - you can snag yourself a LOT of extra lives in the industrial level. On the first reverse-going conveyor belt there is a one-up just below the first "bend" of the belt. If I recall correctly, you have to use the spinning 8x shuriken shot to get it. Then you ride the belt down to your death, pushing Shenobi to the right to grab it just before he falls. It turns out this is actually TWO 1-ups, so each time you die getting this, you get one more life.
This is quite an excellent review. The fact that he feels really passionate a bout the game comes across very well.It's a pity his reviews of modern games are nowhere near as good as this.

i just got this game for the genesis...i don't like it. the difficulty is ridiculous, worse than Ninja Gaiden, partially because i cannot beat the first boss because of sluggish, unresponsive controls. i should have bought Streets of Rage 2.

@bladerj samurai didn't have honor either, they were treacherous deceivers. the bushido code was created after the heyday of the samurai. ninja had masters, and most ninja were samurai.
I don't know if Godzilla teaming up with Shinobi would be such a good idea. It reminds me of the Star-Wars games. Where Darth Vador teamed with the main character. While it might sound like a good idea in theory. This just brought down the average age of those playing the game.

You didnt put in the infinite shuriken code in the options menu.... you reduce your starting shurikens to 0 then hold back for a few seconds.... the two 00's become the infinity symbol!
that power up that makes you jump higher doesn't help in the stage 7 level with the big waves... you still only jump as far left and right as normal... i only found this out a few years back! lol

I agree with what you said about the updates of classic games, that was great punditry. I would like to add something though, and this is something that has plagued me as far as video games are concerned for the last 20 years: PLEASE keep the controls simple! I pretty much stopped playing games when the SNES came out because I remember thinking there were all these buttons and so much stuff to remember and different combos and such that it confused the hell out of me and turned me off.
Regarding the swap from side scrollers to 3D games, I frequently think of Mystical Ninja for N64 and it's sequel. The first was 3D and the second was a 3D sidescroller.

Was really enjoyable watching you play. You showed some real heart and skill playing properly on the original console, not using savestates to easily beat the game like so many other videos too!
seriously... CGR needs to review the power rangers side scrolling game for snes and gen. it was awesome... I just played it again the other day. it has a level of detail and quality you dont see in a lot of games based on shows or movies. and the bosses are awesome. its like double dragon meets shinobi

I would absolutely buy anything that has to do with Godzilla. So a side scroller where Godzilla teams up with a ninja? Sounds bad ass. You could just do it with a straight up character select screen: choose Shinobi, Godzilla, Spiderman, Batman, or the Dog.
I mean, I love the Godzilla fighting games pipeworks is doing but what I wouldn't give to play another balls-to-wall insane side-scroller like GMOM. The Kitchen Sink was even in it!
Yeah seriously, 2D desperately needs to come back. Sega should try 2D platforming with series like Shinobi, Alex Kidd, Wonder Boy, and Vectorman, and Sonic. I believe with those series as 2D side scrollers in today's world would probably break records in fun, storylines, and characters! Just think.... new games, classic, fun gameplay with more "suspension of belief" than imaginable!

Don't worry about platformers, there's plenty out there. Commercially, there's Castlevania, Mario, and other things like that that just haven't changed, and a majority of "art games" are straight up platformers with metaphors.
Other independent side-scrollers, like Cave Story, are getting commercial versions as digital downloads. It's the beginning of the side-scroller renaissance.
There is also a version 1.04 that was made when this game made it onto the Wii Virtual Console that removed Spidey and replaced him with a new boss that acts like him.

@Capstain259 Agree Streets of Rage 2 is better, probably the best Sega Genesis/MegaDrive game and still in my top 5 faves on any platform.
However, to EASILY beat the 1st boss next time you play...
...Firstly go to options and selet 00 (ZERO) shurikens but wait until the 00 turns into an infinity symbol - now you have unlimited shurikens.
When you encounter boss #1 simply jump onto the wall and use the sommersalt shuriken move all the time and you can beat him with no damage!

I'll be damned if that's not spider-man! He has the same colors, the same exact stance we're pretty used ot seeing him in, and he shoots webs. All of the above equal up to four things: a Spider-Man Fonie with good gear, an action figure with a crappy gimmick, one of Spider-Man's many clones or Spider-Man! I'm going with the clone thing.

You didnt put in the infinite shuriken code in the options menu.... you reduce your starting shurikens to 0 then hold back for a few seconds.... the two 00's become the infinity symbol!

I agree with what you said about the updates of classic games, that was great punditry. I would like to add something though, and this is something that has plagued me as far as video games are concerned for the last 20 years: PLEASE keep the controls simple! I pretty much stopped playing games when the SNES came out because I remember thinking there were all these buttons and so much stuff to remember and different combos and such that it confused the hell out of me and turned me off.

Regarding the swap from side scrollers to 3D games, I frequently think of Mystical Ninja for N64 and it's sequel. The first was 3D and the second was a 3D sidescroller.

But it just isn't important to the content they make. Sure, Doug might briefly mention James' wife or he might make a casual video with a wedding ring, but it's his personal life and we shouldn't care anyway.

and seems to me some levels are missing (or maybe i just forgot them)
but i do know for sure that spiderman was not definately there
and godzila was replaced with some giant dino-looking robot
btw the most enjoyable level for me was level 1, and pretiest for some reason

seriously... CGR needs to review the power rangers side scrolling game for snes and gen. it was awesome... I just played it again the other day. it has a level of detail and quality you dont see in a lot of games based on shows or movies. and the bosses are awesome. its like double dragon meets shinobi

I would absolutely buy anything that has to do with Godzilla. So a side scroller where Godzilla teams up with a ninja? Sounds bad ass. You could just do it with a straight up character select screen: choose Shinobi, Godzilla, Spiderman, Batman, or the Dog.
I mean, I love the Godzilla fighting games pipeworks is doing but what I wouldn't give to play another balls-to-wall insane side-scroller like GMOM. The Kitchen Sink was even in it!

Yeah seriously, 2D desperately needs to come back. Sega should try 2D platforming with series like Shinobi, Alex Kidd, Wonder Boy, and Vectorman, and Sonic. I believe with those series as 2D side scrollers in today's world would probably break records in fun, storylines, and characters! Just think.... new games, classic, fun gameplay with more "suspension of belief" than imaginable!

Don't worry about platformers, there's plenty out there. Commercially, there's Castlevania, Mario, and other things like that that just haven't changed, and a majority of "art games" are straight up platformers with metaphors.
Other independent side-scrollers, like Cave Story, are getting commercial versions as digital downloads. It's the beginning of the side-scroller renaissance.

There is also a version 1.04 that was made when this game made it onto the Wii Virtual Console that removed Spidey and replaced him with a new boss that acts like him.
