I think this is a decent explanation for it, especially because it takes into account the other 2 swings. But they say it's been swinging since like 2007, and that constant wind couldn't have been continuously swinging.

I call BS on your theory. Had a similar experience as a teenager. NO WIND....middle tire swing FLEW back and forth. Other two on either side wiggled from the middle swings momentum. Watched for almost 20 minutes before falling asleep.

The pendulum effect just doesn't work for me. First off the wind is blowing perpendicular to the swing. Second, all of the examples all have only one thing holding them up. The swing has two chains holding it up meaning you would have to bring the effect to both chains with the same force. Plus friction with the air would eventually cause the swing to stop and prevent it from starting in the first place. Plus clocks work by gears rotating inside them to keep the penulum swinging.
Fact or Faked huh...how come no other swingset in the world has ever been reported doing this? Is this the only playground in the entire world with resonance and the perfect amount of wind? Ok people i would LOVE to know where you guys got the idea that anywhere in these reports that someone said that they swing was under 24 hour surveillance prior to History channels team showing up. I saw the fact or faked episode as well. Though they ruled it a fake, it is wierd how it seems to be swinging by itself. By the way, although they said it could have been wind, one test I would have done would be to put the swing in an enclosed area (to cut off the wind), set up cameras (for at least 24 hours) and see if it starts swinging by itself (somebody would have to watch the camera too to avoid contamination). If it happens then, then it could be paranormal.

I'm certainly not saying that this is paranormal however the wind explanation seems a bit weak in that the wind is blowing perpendicular to the way the swing is moving. Also according to F or F, they had to apply fourteen miles an hour wind to get movement. Has anyone checked to see if this wind speed is common in that area? The bridge is within a huge valley, lots of wind travels through their, and due to the steel cables not being deep enough in the ground on both sides of the bridge, its caused the steel cables to move in a wind storm, thus causing the accident.
under further investigation, i now know why it moves. wind pulses hit the swing seat from the side, causing the swing to start to twist. as its twisted a certain way, another gust of wind hits it again and causes it to move perpendicularly to the wind. much like wind hitting a planes aileron causes the wing to move a certain way. this continues until the swing cant swing any fast from the present wind speed.
one steady bit of wind on one side (front or back), would slow it down. the wind would have to blow in PERFECTLY timed pulses. like when you swing you kick your legs at the highest point, the wind would have to hit when the swing hits the highest point. youre telling me wind knows when to do that? i hope not
your explanation is udder rubbish, the resonant frequency of all 3 swings will be relative. The variance will not be so great that the other two completely lack motion beyond the slight jarring from the moving swing.
The thing about this is the fact that, not only was the wind going in the wrong direction for it to caused it to swing, is that it kept going far too long for it to be natural.
Definitely not resonance but the theory about the swing size doesn't make sense either. For the same reason as resonance. It may take less wind to move but this has been happening for a long time. I don't think that the wind would be strong enough and be at the right angle all the time. I don't know what it is but those theories just don't make sense.

@wiseguyknowsit You'd believe it if you saw it with your own eyes. That's what it took for me to believe. I also experienced a phenomenon in the bathroom of a hotel I worked at. I turned the water on to wash my hands, the water in the next sink was turning on and off with my faucet. It's handle (the secondary valve to let water out) was not moving. The engineer pulled the underboard off so I could see the plumbing. His final words? "Someone was saying HI" CREEPY!

I call BS on your theory. Had a similar experience as a teenager. NO WIND....middle tire swing FLEW back and forth. Other two on either side wiggled from the middle swings momentum. Watched for almost 20 minutes before falling asleep.

@Garrador lol one gal did check it out...so I was told. She tried sitting on it while it was swinging and couldn't, she kept falling off. Everyone there knew what the swing did. I didn't believe anyone until I saw it for myself. It was a bit freaky, I was young and somewhat scared so I just waited to see if it would stop. Honestly, I didn't even want to blink! Fatigue got the better of me. When I woke up the next morning, first thing I did was look out the window...nothing...all was normal.

The pendulum effect just doesn't work for me. First off the wind is blowing perpendicular to the swing. Second, all of the examples all have only one thing holding them up. The swing has two chains holding it up meaning you would have to bring the effect to both chains with the same force. Plus friction with the air would eventually cause the swing to stop and prevent it from starting in the first place. Plus clocks work by gears rotating inside them to keep the penulum swinging.

Why has the apparent wind not changed since it's first been reported? And how do we know if this hasn't happened before it was first discovered to swing on it's own?

Ok people i would LOVE to know where you guys got the idea that anywhere in these reports that someone said that they swing was under 24 hour surveillance prior to History channels team showing up. You had a kid who noticed it and came back the next day. Etc. no one babysat the swing to make sure it was perpetual. This resonance/vortex is just horseshit. It was a ratio of wind to surface area. Case closed.

I saw the fact or faked episode as well. Though they ruled it a fake, it is wierd how it seems to be swinging by itself. By the way, although they said it could have been wind, one test I would have done would be to put the swing in an enclosed area (to cut off the wind), set up cameras (for at least 24 hours) and see if it starts swinging by itself (somebody would have to watch the camera too to avoid contamination). If it happens then, then it could be paranormal.

I'm certainly not saying that this is paranormal however the wind explanation seems a bit weak in that the wind is blowing perpendicular to the way the swing is moving. Also according to F or F, they had to apply fourteen miles an hour wind to get movement. Has anyone checked to see if this wind speed is common in that area? AND when they put another swing right next to this one it did not show the same tendencies. Odd little phenomenon, fun mystery.

Sigh. The wind in the video is blowing towards the camera. If you don't believe me look at leaf near the end of the video. The swing is facing another way. The wind is not making that swing move the way it is. Also the wind would make the other swings move no mater what if it was the case even though their seats aren't as wide. They aren't moving. Fact or fiction show is dumb anyhow.

It was found that the center swing is bigger and wider than the other two creating more surface area for wind to push on it, much like a sail on a boat. It's not resonance and the Tacoma Narrows fell because of poor engineering.

The Tacoma Narrows bridge fell because of a structural failure. The bridge is within a huge valley, lots of wind travels through their, and due to the steel cables not being deep enough in the ground on both sides of the bridge, its caused the steel cables to move in a wind storm, thus causing the accident.

under further investigation, i now know why it moves. wind pulses hit the swing seat from the side, causing the swing to start to twist. as its twisted a certain way, another gust of wind hits it again and causes it to move perpendicularly to the wind. much like wind hitting a planes aileron causes the wing to move a certain way. this continues until the swing cant swing any fast from the present wind speed.

one steady bit of wind on one side (front or back), would slow it down. the wind would have to blow in PERFECTLY timed pulses. like when you swing you kick your legs at the highest point, the wind would have to hit when the swing hits the highest point. youre telling me wind knows when to do that? i hope not

your explanation is udder rubbish, the resonant frequency of all 3 swings will be relative. The variance will not be so great that the other two completely lack motion beyond the slight jarring from the moving swing.

Definitely not resonance but the theory about the swing size doesn't make sense either. For the same reason as resonance. It may take less wind to move but this has been happening for a long time. I don't think that the wind would be strong enough and be at the right angle all the time. I don't know what it is but those theories just don't make sense.

THis is inconclusive, it baffles scientists and paranormal experts, theres definatly more to it than your theory.
