This is from the official VHS release - the TV broadcast version has a slightly longer edit (during the end of the track). There are subtle differences in the audio mix between the two versions also, e.g. at the start of Night In Shanghai.
Well i suggest to everyone to listen the radio broadcast of this concert in Pekin in 1981, searching in Google with "jarre concerts in china radio broadcast", and then go to Alvaro M Rocha website. You'll hear the real stuff. And then you'll get your own conclusions.
It's probably because this radio broadcast recording was from Bejing. There were played only a few tracks like: Oxygene 1, 2, Fishing Junks, and Magnetic Fields 1, and 2. All the rest, and official relase was from the Shanghai concert. If I'm wrong, somebody correct me please.
@jjorquera The reason those radio recordings sound so different is because at that concert they didn't have enough power to run the effects processors like stereo delay and reverb and all the others due to the outdated chinese power system
That he is not actual playing while turning the knobs is right. The Synthesizers are programmed by these knobs. Each knob represents a note in a short sequence of the music that is continuously repeated. With the knobs he varies volume and frequence of each tone while the sequencer plays the music.
So he is not "playing" live, but programming live. Pretty much the same for me.
I know a lot of sounds a pre-set. That is the nature of electronic music. What I don't believe is that no sounds were played live. What is the point of taking capable musicians on tour if the whole sound is playback?
I don't believe like in a previous comment, that only the drummer was playing live. There are pre set sounds, but that doesn't mean that no one was actually playing an instrument,
This is by far the best version of Magnetic Fields 1 and it's a shame it was excluded from the concert album. The piece has been modernized many times over the years, and there are things in other versions I like too (Delacroix' bass part on the 1986 recordings, or the Theremin intro on the Aero recording). But this old performance remains the best! Lucky Chinese! :-)
loved mf1 on the oxygene-inhouse-tour. forget the drummer, but he really kicked ass on that track, itchy light show. it's a shame, this track can only be seen on the china-video.
it's a fantastic recording. hard, rough, pure 80's. it's well done on lyon, too.
he is a great actor, but no musician, who needs to hear someone on stage. in fact, on "concerts in china" only the drummer roger rizzitelli needs to hear something to get along with the sequencers. in the 80s - fairlight-backup with page r. "what do you want from me?"
i'm sad about saying something like this about jarre, my early keyboard-idol. jarre "live" is just show. a good one, but just show.
although: china is the most impressive simmons-drumshow. impressive.
Perhaps you can educate me. Do the musicians actually play their instruments on stage at a JMJ show or do they let a tape run and mime it all. I love the music but have always wondered if they actually need to play anything since it is all electronic and could just be a playback through the PA?? Help!
few parts were played "live", like the magnetic-fields "solo" with that mini-casio and the audience. (you might find it on yt, not on the record). it might not be a tape, but sequenced songs from the allmighty fairlight.
but don't mind: it's a good show. electronic music is hard to reproduce live on stage (did it myself, it's hard and you NEED those sequencers). if it's done good, you erase tracks, you really play live - and you don't fake your audience. jarre fakes a lot, but i love his music.
But from what I have seen in a concert (with a mini camera on his head) is that he's drawing the potmeters/knobs life, running from synth to synth. Also if he was an actor, then he has to take with him twice as much instruments. One for playing and one for acting
it's a musicians/keyboarder job to play the keys, not the knobs.
again: jarre's music and studioskills are timelesse, but he is not playing live. if you know this fact, you'll enjoy the show more and you don't feel betrayed.
The best version from the Magnetic Fields Part 01 with little bit disharmonic glides to the beginning of the track but a gigantic chorus part at 1:49. The great Jean-Michel Jarre
Apart from the bit goofy drums this is the best version of this song indeed.

I think that JMJ's composition sounds as JS Bach, but i don't know what Bach's composition.

@strepkins well to be true, all china versions are the best... the tracks were full of action... later concerts reduced the sounds and structures.

Wow, a blast from the past JMJ again!
I remember dancing around the livingroom in my PJ's when I was 8 years old to this.
...thank god they didn't have camera phones then.

If you're suggesting that this is somehow "fake" because of what you heard on that website, I very much doubt that.
