With such a huge part of Aang's character coming from that culture, how could the default ethnicity for him be white?

The actors I am not against however I dont trust that the studios are hiring based on acting skills. Which is a reasonable judgment, considering that the open casting call for Aang specifically said they were looking for Caucasian and any other ethnic descent. Its really not that much of a stretch to believe that they went looking for Sokka and Katara actors of Caucasian decent first and didnt even look too hard at non-whites. Hiring according to race.

Avatar is set in a fictional universe, oh wise one. There are no Asians, Americans, etc, it merely has Asian cultural influence.
And why should it even matter that a Caucasian is taking the lead role? The movie is made in the US, meaning it'll have a largely white demographic. But that shouldn't matter. Just because the lead role isn't what you want to be racially (from a cartoon with ambiguous races), you're claiming it to be racist? Ridiculous.

Asian and Inuit characters being replaced with Caucasian actors. There are Asians in the film however they aren't played as the main characters. If somehow Lord of the Rings made a cast of only asians and blacks would that be comfortable with you?

There are no caucasian characters in the Avatar Universe. They simply do not exist! Just like there are no minorities in the Lord Of The Rings Universe. Aang ethicity is clear from his clothes, his spirituality, and pretty much all the other contextual clues that his character was modeled after the Tibetan monks. With such a huge part of Aang's character coming from that culture, how could the default ethnicity for him be white?

In your sense it is alright if there was a fantasy movie that is based entirely on african culture with people with african names and had the main characters white. The casting of the avatar is nothing new to me as they always have been casting white actors for leading roles. I am not the only one who protests again Hollywood's whitewashing. Actor Robert Ito once said "When the script called for a larger Asian role, it was almost inevitably given to a white actor."

I believe the respectful thing to do is to hire people to play the characters who actually have something to do with the source culture the mythology is based on.

Because unless the source material explicitly says he's supposed to be Asian, and it does not, then there would be a problem because they would be derailing from the original character.
You make it sound as though the movie should be exclusive to a particular race for the sole reason that it uses that race's culture. In that case, Michael Dante DiMartino and Bryan Konietzko should have never created it since they're not racially a part of that culture!

The actors I am not against however I dont trust that the studios are hiring based on acting skills. Which is a reasonable judgment, considering that the open casting call for Aang specifically said they were looking for Caucasian and any other ethnic descent. Its really not that much of a stretch to believe that they went looking for Sokka and Katara actors of Caucasian decent first and didnt even look too hard at non-whites. Hiring according to race.

Graceful race might be a social construct but it is a lived reality. fantasy universe not equal to real race arguement is also blown out of the water that we read/watch things in terms of things that signify. why would the creators use real world indications of Asian culture if they didn't mean for it to be seen as Asian. If i had to relate Avatar to real world cultures those cultures would all be Inuit/Meso-American/Asian Inspired.

I'm a huge fan of the cartoon series...but this just doesn't look too good to me. My first problem is that M. Night Shyamalan is involved. The only thing I have to say to that is: The Village. Lol.
My second thing is that it doesn't look like Aang is gonna be acting like a kid...the way he was in the cartoon was awesome and funny lol. But I'll still see it cause I'll get to for free lol. So hopefully it won't be bad.
