@rogwheel ROGGY BABY ??? NEIL YOUNG IS AN ENIGMA !!! --- HES LIKE A SPOOK IN THE NIGHT !!! --- HE TOLD ME THAT HE LEFT CANADA CUZ FRANKLY ---- IT SMELLS BAD !!!
I think I heard part of that version of 'Down By the River'. During that tour a BBC show called 'The Old Grey Whistle Test' was filming a 1 hour special about Neil "going country". As far as I know they never broadcast it apart from a sneak preview, with some bits of interviews and 'Back to the Country'. Then, at the end, the host said, "And just in case you thought he'd forgotten the old stuff..." and they showed a couple of minutes of GREAT 'Down By the River'!
I love you Neil your music gets right into my soul and makes it sing, such brilliant music over so many years it is totally impossible to have just 1 favourite
I called up Tim Drummond tonight and he was in good spirits. Some of his favorite memories are of playing with Neil and friends - from The Stay Gators to The Shocking Pinks to The International Harvesters - some incredible players, indeed!~
I went to this International Harvesters show in Melbourne Australia at Festival Hall. It was the first time Neil came to OZ. Neils right these guys were really in sync and just hit that groove. I too loved Ben Keith's slide playing.I remember Rufus being a really big guy who just threw himself into his music.
"Ain't singing for Pepsi, Ain't singing for Coke, Ain't sining for nobody make me look like a joke". Niel has always been a non conformist. He actually does march and play to his own drum. "You know a body feels empty when there is no love inside it. You know a body feels empty when there's no love at all". Rockin Roll ,Rock a Billy, the Shocking Pinks, Niel has always pushed the limits..... Nice reflection of that time and the artist in your life. Rock on Niel!
I've always loved Old Ways because it was the first Neil Young i ever heard , i bought it on the day it came out , purely out of curiousity . I was 18 and bands i liked (Green On Red , The Long Ryders) used to name him as an influence , i thought , hmmmm , think i'll check this fella out . I thought it was amazing and didn't realise it was any different from any other Neil Young album. Still love it despite having all the rest , i always will !!! CLASSIC album.
What can you say? Just Neil paying tribute to his band...to his friends. Listening to him talk about the late Ben Keith in particular is very moving. Gotta get back to the country back where it all began...
@reelife Agreed. A show where he, say, plays a small set followed by an extended period of him just talking about his experiences and telling stories and his ideas about things, followed by another short set would be one of the more worthwhile ways to spend your money. Then again, I suppose all his songs are talking about his experiences and story telling and his ideas about things so really, you get that every show.
@ecclesiasticous not totally useless at all. I think this would be a great idea and I betchya Neil would be into it. I noticed during the Greendale tour, that he seemed to really get into telling these little side stories, that in some, way were offshoots of his life, for sure. Plus as time goes on, I'm sure Neil wouldn't mind taking it down a notch and just relaying some of the stories of his life. Who knows, maybe this little ole post will make it to him and give a little inspiration :)
Just listened to the interview. I loved Hawks & Doves and Old Ways when they came out and I still love them. Thanks for being you Neil! It's always the right thing at the right time.

Whatever period of life this guy was and will be N.Y.'s firm message is always PEACE!
Better than anyone he knows and spreads how PEACE is the best a man can get.
Even what a lot of people miss the most ... the more if they just do not know or hate it.
God bless!
