  • does anyone know what amp was he using in this video?

looks like an orange ad30 but i heard soo many people say he uses vox ac30.

also is that a p 90 in that 335 or is that a humbucker?

im in love with this tone.

    cheers

  • @051234darren Howdy, those are orange speaker cabs, looks like 2x12 cabs. If you look under the one on the left, there is a Vox head. I cannot say which one for sure, but probably a AC30 or variance. Also, probably a humbucker. His tone is pretty great.

  • Bon titre, j'aime bien, peut faire un carton en Europe !!!

  • Great band

  • its good to see a rock band with a good drummer again. no offense to good drummers but this is one of the few great up and coming drummers (along with the guy from AM taxi, hes good too)

  • Fantastic band, fantastic drummer! Love this song.

  • Reminds me of U2..the only exception being that Darren King isn't human, of course

  • Lol! He is out of his mind but in an awesome way.

  • haha i saw them at bamboozle and ive never heard of them and for all of the other bands i was like jumping with the crowd and like pushing and moshing but when they played i like started to jump and after like 3 seconds i couldnt do anything but stare at the stage in awe

  • Saw Mutemath live too. These cats are ridiculous. If u ever get a chance, go see 'em.....oh yeah, and buy all of their cd's.

  • thumbs up if you think the drummer Darren King is a BEAST!!!!!!

  • @kakee222 Representing McAllen Texas

  • @kakee222 Look up Danny Carey.

  • @kakee222 thumbs up if you just talked and get a pic with darren and you got the bottleneck from Todd!

  • This song was at the beginning of The Stepfather! Just thought I'd throw that out there! =D

  • boy, what a drummer

  • The performance feels and looks so natural to them, unbelievable talent

  • this whole band is ridiculously talented

  • I bet the drummer uses big drum sticks using that crash/ride alot

  • darren king!!!!! wth!!! sick....i want that cymbal

  • i saw them live, and they were awsome and crazy!

  • think that stage is small enough?

  • @Tehyamz

    I wonder if it's a 22" K crash/ride

  • ? i thought they did this backwards...

  • the best drummer.

    de la conchadesumare xD

  • Hell yeah. These guys out on an awesome show. Saw them this weekend at Voodoo Fest in New Orleans.

  • Probably my favorite TV performance from any band.

  • Blown away seems to be the most often used phrase. I definitely, like Dave, was too.

  • saw them live yesterday and i was blown away

  • MUTEMATH is definitely one of my favorite bands. I was a little disappointed at this video; I was hoping they would run around more and break stuff ;-).

  • im happy this band hasnt fallen in to the pit of shit music. like the kooks. and indie shit. i hope they never do either

  • hey I understand what your saying but come on the kooks are not shit, they have kept their sound

  • badass!

  • Drummer's a beast.

  • hELL YEAH. tHAT DRUMMER KILLS.

  • the soudn was taken out...

  • these guys are unbelievable performers. i'd do anything to see them live. talented songwriters too.

  • Just saw this episode from Letterman. They have a sound like the band Yes in this and couple other songs. Bravo! This old fart of 51 has a new favorite band!

  • 1:35 wtf

  • What?

  • sick break

  • Comment removed

  • The singer sounds like Bono

  • @scav98 the difference being, that bono is a pretentious talentless cunt, but i see what you're saying

  • haha, dave is happy! that was awesome.

  • this performance is just AMAZING!!! i want ot see them perform live sooooo bad. GO MUTEMATH.

P.S. - Darren King, Best Drummer EVER!!

  • You have to look at the whole picture - this isn't a drum contest. His playing intertwines so well with the music that he makes the drums sing.

That's what impresses me so much, is that he doesn't showoff or go over the top, he plays appropriately for the song and sounds incredible

  • I should qualify that... I mean he doesn't showoff to the point it detracts from a good song. You are supposed to showoff when you're a showman :P

  • My dad has been a drummer for 25 years now and when he says a drummer is good. I better beleive hes telling the truth.

  • Coming from a person who has seen drummers play live that have 5 cymbals and 4 toms, to darren who has two toms and one cymbal, no body, absolutely nobody does as much as darren, with the energy that he has. Possibly one of the greatest drummers.... to me. But other drummers in screamo bands like august burns red, they are great drummers too.

  • the drummer is good, but not amazing. two cymbals and two toms can be made to do more. shoot, the drummer for The Devil Wears Prada uses what like three cymbals, the snare, two toms, and a double kick pedal and a single bass at concerts? he just has what he needs to play the song.

  • what says more about a drummer, that he has a massive kit to hide behind or one that uses less and sounds better?

    Darren King is amazing.

  • Wait...did you just bring out "the devil wears prada"...dude. They suck. If you are going to compare drummers at least talk about god ones. I hate slipknot but their drimmer is good. Neil Pert from Rush is good. But the devil wears prada, no, not good.

  • I think a lot of people are excited about his energy and interesting fills, not just his kit.

Regardless, hes fun to watch and is very creative

  • Indeed

  • it's not the tools, it's the musician. Syn Gates could play a first act guitar from wal mart and make it sound good

  • LOL he sounds like shit on his own sig guitar

  • HAHAHA that's funny jackass. I'd love to hear you play better. Post a vid and let me know :-)

  • that drummer is fucking amazing

  • that drummer is sick nasty

  • My year 12 music class band wants me to do the drums for this.. How the fuck.. Going to be a long weekend *__*

  • yeh.... but do it, and blow them away!

  • how's the practicing going?

  • I can do the studio verson of the intro, verse and chorus, but I'm having trouble remembering the structure near the end of the song, and I can't nail the same fills so I just wing them, rar

  • he's got the KEYTAR! haha

  • lol Dave seems reasonably impressed, like a king admiring his court entertainers. har har!

  • MM + SSPU + Muse + tour = hell yeah?

  • yea. HELL YEA.

  • what sspu? :o

  • SilverSun PickUps. Decent band.

  • Comment removed

  • HAHA! I love Dave's reaction at the end. <3

  • lol love it...he looks a tad drunk xD

  • i love this drummer! hes got a freakin tiny kit, but he shreds! its awesome. not to mention two cymbals? haha

  • this quality is crap

  • There need to be more bands like them( well I dunno maby not cause then it wouldnt really be cool anymore)

  • that means u like garage rock then

  • love their enthusiasm

  • haha I love Dave's reaction to them. I don't think I've ever heard him laugh quite like that.

  • "How about that drummer? Look at that guy!"

    Hahaha.

  • I just want to brag and say that I met them ;) It's about time they get the recognization they deserve!

To those of you who say he sounds different; wouldn't you be nervous performing on national television? Maybe he was sick? He's still great!!

  • This guys rock! Ive loved them before Twilight! AHHHH!!!

  • aw they were in twilight?

    fail...

  • no kidding they were on the soundtrack. if you were a fan before twilight. you'll likely hate their new song. its called spotlight. it was followed by one of their worst live performances ever on one of the late nights.

  • you know. the lead singer isnt perfect. but he can sing rlly well, its rlly similar to the album. compare to like singers, for instance avril lavigne*shoot her* who sound fine in the album. but cant sing shit live. theres a reason these guys make good money

  • the bassist is really fucking good too.

  • oh man, that drummer...

  • and to the dude who said his voice sounds different on the album-WRONG he sounds amazingly close

  • keytar=amazing and yes they are unspeakably amazing live

  • anyone else blown away by the drummer? He friggin pounded those pigskins

  • Oh yea darren is a amazing drummer

  • Yep him and Matt Tong are the best drummers in the world at the moment IMHO

  • i don't know about that.........have you heard of thomas lang or Jojo Mayer? If you haven't heard of them then you probably haven't heard the best drummers in the world check em out or thomas pridgen from Mars Volta

  • Lang and Mayer are good individual drummers but practice their solos constantly and don't incorporate that into many songs so they don't count. Again Pridgens amazing yeh but the difference between those guys and Matt Tong is that the drumming is awesome is EVERY song and how he makes it fit with the music is also really impressive. And I'm sure he could do what the other guys do with practice because that's all it takes when you already have insane talent.

  • excellent way of putting it but on Pridgen I have to disagree look at Wax simulcra -The Mars Volta especially the performance on letterman

  • Yeah, Prigdin is a beast. Still this drummer has to be one of the most active and stil musical drummers ever. Plus I think Mute Math's style of music enhances busy drumming and vice versa...

  • I don't know if I'd call Darren's drumming busy, he does use a fair share of fills, but he's all pocket in terms of not playing uneccessary parts.

  • Yes its true that he's focused on the pocket, but when you compare him to someone like ?uestlove then he seems pretty busy. But let me say that busy in his usage isn't a bad thing. Like I said before, the genre that he plays in (rock) calls for more of a busy player than hip hop or funk. But I enjoy Darren Kings drumming just as much as ?uestlove's... I was just pointing out the music style. And if you think Darren's not busy, check out"Noticed". You dont have to be hittin 300 things to be busy.

  • So I totally agree with you, and yeah Noticed is wild. I just don't consider it busy because typically busy means the drummer is playing something totally irrelevant overtop of the band and its entirely detached from what their playing, but Darren totally isn't like that.

  • Yeah Darren is all about the groove even when he's playing 16ths and 32nds on the high hat. And he makes that 4 peice kit sound huge. I was amazed when I first learned that he was playing with only HHs and a ride. But he makes it sound great.

  • I'm no drummer, so I don't really understand what makes Darren such a damn good drummer. Someone explain to me why making a small kit sound huge is such a compliment? Thanks in advance

  • Comment removed

  • The reason is because the more creative a drummer gets the better he is at getting different sounds out of just one or two pieces of equipment without sounding monotonous. Give most people a kit like that and they can't do too much with it. But once in a while you'll get guys like Darren or ?uestlove from the Roots who can stretch and create more sonic palletes out of a limited recource.

  • aw man, for y'all that think they sound bad live, check again! im not even a huge fan; in fact, i was told to check out this song but this live performance is pretty well put together. don't get it....consider how many 'studio' bands there are that can't hold a candle to this live. just my opinion

  • i love the drum fill at 1:35

  • haha letterman is so awkward at the end of their performance. probably blown away by the drummer as everyone else is :)

  • Darren rocks on the drums...but of course he does since he is from my hometown of marshfield missouri!!!

  • indeed to all positive comments (((((((=

they are really epic. it was just randomnes that i know them and im very happy to know them. i love all songs from them *____* MUTE MATH 4 LIFE!
