Being a professional potter throwing every day for my living, and seeing many not so great potters on youtube, I want to say that Isaac is absolutely great, in an ever so down to earth, humble way. I give this man deep respect and wished I could have assisted him. This is a true master potter. I am in awe.
Thanks for posting. I think the music you chose is very fitting for this master's art.
hahahahahahaha! without Bernard Leach, Shoji Hamada..... pottery wouldnt be what it is today.
just goes to show how un-appreciative people are these days and can only focus great talent on one person.
i love it how people think some one is such a great potter because he throws big. i thought only high school students thought that....? maybe im wrong. hahaha!
but this too is great and Isaac Button is right up Leach's and Hamada's alley. maybe in your isolated world he rated high enough.
Fantastic. If we really had any sort of respect for this stuff then IP would be some sort of national treasure and all school kids would be shown this film on national IP day.
The music is beautifully judged as well.
I'm not sue about some of the music credits though. The Swan is Saint Saens and I think that the second piece is Vaughn Williams.
I love that he is throwing with a shirt and tie! Not something that one sees very often among us scruffy potters nowadays....I wonder what the little cylinders were going to be used for...anyone knows? Thanks for posting this video, it's great!
thts actully my great great grandfather because soil hill pootery (his pottery) now belongs to my family and my great granny button was his daughter i went to soil hill once and his coat was in a toilet with a sovering in the pocet

I'm a pottery teacher/studio technician in Coquitlam, BC, Canada. I've been watching the Isaac Button video over and over! I can't watch it enough. I've sent my students the YouTube link and they too are, of course, amazed. I would absolutely love to get more information on Isaac Button and Soil Hill. Any information would be very much appreciated!
Thanks for that, I remember being shown the whole film when I was in college in the 80's. Brilliant to see some of it again. Have you got any more. Have you got David Attenborough interviewing Lucie Rie
he was great great grandfather my great granny button was his daughter so his pottery (soil hill actully belongs to my family i went to see it once and in the toilet was his jacket with truppence in
Thanks j... My pottery tutor who had been the thrower at Grassington Pottery gave me a large shell calendar colour picture of IB which i still have. I'd love to learn more about IB + family.
Thanks for making this available. I'd heard about it for a long time. It's legendary among us potters as well as an important historical document. By the way, the guy making balls for Isaac and carrying away the pots is probably the late british potter and writer, Robert Fournier, one of the makers of the movie. I hope you will put more of the film up for us to see.
Thanks for breaking the stranglehold on this shell film documentary by showing this film extract. Hopefully it will become available to purchase/hire at a realistic price.

According to a friend of mine, they wanted to go back a couple of years later to do a sound track with dialogue but Button had already died.

Check with potter and author Martin Lungley: he mentioned that Alan Fournier had been his tutor and knows lots about the background.ADCox
