  • Mr. Alf423 What artist in this century hasn't had some vice or another? Ugly? Yes Drunks? Perhaps, but my god they are great. Open your mind, close your mouth and enjoy it for what it is, entertainment.

  • They're just a bunch of drunks

  • Bristol Rovers

  • PERFECT DRINKING SONG. You can't help but sway! x

  • Me being der tosser.....

I'll just go fuck myself nowww....

There is some slight possibility that I might have something outside the normal rounds - but blame them: they're the British, and they'll take it like men -- no? joke.

Please, God, make me half as good -- for posterity!!!!

I always wanted to be English.

    There it is. Hoo. Hahhh..

    Please continue..

If something did go wrong, those damn Brits shouldn't have loaded for that......

  • I like being more uptempo. Some Irish stuff rite hurr son.

  • This version is pretty vulgar. Yuck. My how low we've sunk.

  • weavers ----gilbert seeger hellerman hays leventhal---1949 in music

  • Hey buds, it's a drinking song isn't it?

  • I've heard so many versions of this song from the weavers, leadbelly, and others.... But this.... Well, it sounds like he was dipping a bit too much into the Irish Ale prior to making this recording. I am not saying it's not music artistically speaking, but if it were art, it would be a canvas on the wall with paint thrown wildly all over the place on it. Just me two cents as an amateur musician.

  • @ronjr009 Until this version, it was one of my favorites. He can't sing and his liver is probably hard as a rock at this point. What a waste!

  • Thanks from Irene XX

  • he was named lead o'belly at birth

  • my opinion, he´d be much better if he was sober.

  • what a beautiful drunken madman god rest ye merry gentelman..

  • Didn't Johnny Cash do a cover of this?

  • @Tonimfurgie35

No, it's a Leadbelly song from the 30's Cash did a version, as have the pogues - Tom Waits does an amazing version too (more recently)

  • From a West Virginia hillbilly, with some texas, in Florida,

I love Shane and the Pogues.

    Thank you everyone who posts.

  • You tossers should quit nitpicking, yes it's 'The Pogues' but so what? The importance is in the music. cosmicarbiteroftaste can just calm down.

  • Shane is obviously smashed out of his head singing this. While his abillty to function while totally drunk is remarkable, this rendition of a somewhat hackneyed song isn't.

  • What a disaster for this great song. These guys know so little that they can't see enough of what the song's about. A better recording quality would help us hear what they are singing. None-the-less I'm glad these people are singing it with a Scottishy twist.

  • You Sir are a Fool

  • Pretty bold statement to make, oh yes, you don't have to face me. You can just insult me/anyone from the comfort and safety your carpeted computer room. Have you ever heard the original time period singers of this great song? I respect The Hogues. I'm sure when they are older, they may have a better idea of what this song is all about. Then maybe, but only maybe, they might sing it with some kind of soul/depth.

I agree with HarmannPalmer, "pity for the beautiful song". There's hope.

  • Also my 6 bedroomed house has polished wooden floors not Carpets.

  • They are irish, and its the Pougues. not the Hougues.

Shane Macgowan is critically aclaimed as one of the greatest Poets of the 20th Century and no one would deny that , so Scottishy twist ????

  • Sir:

I do apologize for my mistake re: Irish/Scottish. In our Country/Appalachian music here in the USA both Scottish and Irish traditions are Deeply Loved and Highly Regarded. There has been a cultural confusion, which is regrettable. There are plenty of prominent Hougues here in CA, so for that mistake I also apologize. It's most commendable that the guy's a great poet. That doesn't make him a great musician; though I can tell The Pougues seems a good group. I stand by my estimation.

  • Please check out the Songs "Dirty Old Town" "Old Main Drag" "Sally Maclennane" By the Pouges with Shane Macgowan. Fantastic songs you may end up a pouges fan Yet . Best A

  • @andreasswarfeld pedantic I know but they are 'The Pogues'.

And their version ........ well I am 65. I suppose my opinion sucks as much as their version .

  • what are you on about ?

  • @andreasswarfeld It's the 'Pogues', from 'Pogue Mahone', and of all of them, Shane is the only one with Irish parents. He went to a posh school in London.

  • So what !

  • @andreasswarfeld so you're ignorant is what.

  • The Pouges fused punk and Irish Folkmusic.Macgowan is Critically acclaimed as one of the Greatest lyric writers of the 20th century. They had a individual musical voice that trancend any issue of importance regarding the members nationality or background. Infact one of their greatest hits was writen by an Englishman. if you had any idea about music you would be able to see that the greatest music always comes out of different cultures sharing musical ideas. Now Fuck Off you TOSSER !!

  • @andreasswarfeld Have another Ritalin son.

  • @cosmicarbiteroftaste ha ha look MmeLnfer thinks your a tosser also. ha ha ha

look at what you wrote "shane is obviously smashed out of his head" you sound like a right silly cunt. hahaha

  • @andreasswarfeld After a comment like that, how could anyone take issue with this man?

    An upstanding gentleman, I think.

  • @andreasswarfeld dont even need to say ...we know :)

  • @andreasswarfeld Which song? I'm curious which one you mean.. This one was put together by Leadbelly. Shane MacGowan is an amazing songster, though. cheers.

  • @nichmars Dirty Old Town

  • @andreasswarfeld punk? you obviously dont know punk. i see the irish and folk. but not punk

  • @josh3mery Look a bit harder , punk is an attitude and the pouges had it .

  • pity for the beautiful song

  • Comment removed

  • This song should definately be re-released - and the Pogues can so express this song so well. I recall hearing this song on Jules Holland New Years Eve show - I hadn't heard it for ages but it was performed so well. This is the first time I've heard the Pogues version - if anyone could revive this song a combination of The Pogues and Jules Holland could - maybe it will stay only in my dreams - Goodnight Irene

  • Classic song glad to hear it done again.

  • shut up

  • agreed.
