  • Different dialect than I'm used to.

  • seriously i think you said it wrong

i can ask a irish person and they will tell me lol

  • Ní raibh sin ceart... Is amadánaí iad :) nah.. Tbh it wasn't THAT bad ;)

  • if you are so clever y dont you make you own video so i could watch it. it just wanted to learn to pronounce hello

  • Im irish :)

  • I likez Irish...

  • There is no one way to say "yes" and "no" in Irish Gaelic; it varies depending on the verb that was used in the question. Also, the pronunciations that are given for "Sláinte" and "Sláinte chughat" are totally wrong - there are different dialects of Irish Gaelic, but those pronunciations are wrong in EVERY dialect. The "r"s are also mispronounced in this video - the "r" sound in Irish Gaelic is not the same as in English - Just letting everyone know :)

  • @ConanMcBrien yes, but it's used all the time when chinking glasses

  • spastic,

  • Ní thuigim i ndáiríre cén fáth an mbacaidh aon duine le gaeilge a fhoghlam má tá siad ag teacht anseo ar laethanta saoire mar ní labhraíonn ach fíor bheagánn daoine gaeilge, beidh na meircéanaigh níos fearr as béarla ceart a fhoghlaim.

  • There's a school in the U.S. that pays people to come learn this beautiful language.

  • i've actually never heard anyone say sláinte before in real life :/ and i'm irish !!

  • If you guys think this video is so awful, make your own and shut up.... or just shut up, this is just for novelties sake...

  • This is awful..

Irish pronunciation is difficult and it should be taught properly, not grossly over-simplified for the hell of it. Not only do 'tá' and 'níl' not mean 'yes' and 'no' but she is saying 'tá' wrong, the t should be soft by placing the tongue behind the top row of teeth as it is said. The fada (accent above the a) signals that is should be a long sound, not short. Her dialects are mixed up too.The first Irish I learnt was from such videos and it took ages to get out of these habits.

  • its freezing cold in ireland!!

  • This should be withdrawn, the whole video is one long cringe, why on earth someone would post this baloni to mislead people with a genuine interest in Ireland and the pronunciation of words in its native tongue is beyond me ??

  • It's called Gaelige or Irish over here.. And 60% of that was wrong. Just plain wrong. Next time, get someone who has a high level of Irish to make a vid like this, because those were baby mistakes.

  • @brizzo7 You do actually reply to Dia dhuit with Dia is Muire dhuit. Also, Dia dhuit does NOT mean good day. It means "God be with you" or more commonly translated as 'hello'.

  • I'm not going to repeat what @TheWhistlingGypsy said, but I will say that this is very misleading. Scots Gaelic is Gaelic. In Ireland, we call our language "Irish". In Irish, it's Gaelige.

  • @siofra44000 Except for all the native Irish speakers who also refer to it as Gaelic, but I suppose they're wrong. Maybe you should tell them.

  • I hate how they say if your going to Ireland! they speak Gaelic in some parts of Scotland too!

  • experts say the sexiest accent comes from northern ireland haha im irish :) .... Erin Go Bragh!

  • If you said that to most Irish people they wouldn't have a clue WAT u were on about

  • That's about the worst pronunciation ever!

  • craic agus ceol is not Irish night life. Irish nightlife is getting so fucked you shit yourself and get thrown out of a club!!

  • Frickin serious?! Dia Duit is pronounced "gia gitch"

  • @wickedrocketelvispel

depends on dialect - I learned it as "djee-uh gwitch" from an Irishman.

  • @soozcue Yeah I learned it too... I guess it does depend on where someone is from the way they say it.

  • @wickedrocketelvispel

Forgive me, but how the fuck would you even know that?

firstly, that is totally incorrect, and even though it does depend on dialect, you and your "pronunciation" would be laughed out the door of any irish establishment.

Im sorry for bitching here, but "irish-americans" and the way that they treat our language and culture, as if we are a quaint and rediculous breed of ignorami, really incense me and most native irish.

So, don't talk shit about what you don't understand.

  • @rokchick01 I apologize for my lack of knowledge. I learned to pronounce it from a native Irishman. Sorry to have disturbed you.

  • @rokchick01 I would love for you to create a video with all the correct pronunciations.

  • I speak Irish, I dont like speaking English. People need to realize that there ARE two languages on the Island. Just because you don't speak Irish does not mean that no-one else speaks Irish. Ireland is a bilingual country. Two languages are spoken on the Island. Get your facts right and stop labeling the country as if it only had ONE language. It does not!

  • isn't it pronounced "slan cheh"?

  • Sláinte Chugat is pronounced "Slawn-tah coo-eth"

  • I have never heard "sláinte" pronounced more horribly!

This video is a bit of a joke to be fair... Also you respond to Dia duit with "tá mé go maith". And there is no actual word for yes or no (trust us irish to be awkward!) but rather you use a negative or positive form of the verb used in the question.

Also, to all you americans and whoever else who thinks they're irish - don't bother trying to speak Gaeilge when you visit. You just embarrass yourself and none of us could be arsed with it...

  • @brizzo7 emm "Dia dhuit" means "hello" or 'God be with you' to be precise..."tá mé go maith" means "i am good" ! The reply to "Dia dhuit" is "Dia is Muire dhuit".

  • If people take advice from this video they are going to get a LOT of funny looks here in Ireland.

You've basically pronounced everything wrong, which can give the words comepletely different meanings. Also, English is our first language.

Let's leave Irish language tips to Irish people, shall we?

  • @xCoolxForxCatsx

English is not our first language. Check the constitution of your country. There is a different between First language and Majority language.

  • actually this is also weong the irish alphabet didnt develop in the 8th century, it went through a spelling reform in the 1960s before that it looked a bit like russian

  • Dia Diut means god be with you not good day

  • its called Gaeilge ... not gaelic

  • @jumping4joy1 cood you pointed it out, gaelic or gaeligh is the sister language of irish, Scottish gaelic

  • @missatomickitten It hasn't been our native tongue is hundreds of years, to be fair. There was a revival of the language in the late 1800's which mimicked a revival in nationalism at the same time. It would be nice to speak it, but it's almost the same as saying the Italians should understand Latin or the Americans should understand Chereokee (or whatever the language is of the Native Americans)

  • Gaelic is the language of Scotland. Ireland is Celtic.

    Fail.

  • @PrincessAirionna565 you'd only have a celtic cross in ireland! gaeilge would be closer the mark!

  • @PrincessAirionna565 Nice try, but there is Irish Gaelic and Scottish Gaelic.

  • Most of the people who correct her pronunciation can't even seem to agree. Haha.

So i'm just going to conclude that none of you are right, and no one really knows how to speak this language.

  • @goodlum a lot of people speak this language. and i've just read through some of the comments again and actually most of us do agree on what aspects of her pronunciation are wrong.

  • Rory Gallagher is missing, hehe !

  • There are so many things wrong here! Why would you go to the bother of making this and then uploading it when you haven't bothered to check if you're right! Step 4 is completely wrong - there is no one way of saying yes and no in Irish. "Tá" and "Níl" generally mean "there is" and "there isn't". Step 5 could hardly be pronounced more wrong. It's pronounced s-láinte, not sh-láinte. Step 6 - "ch"s in Irish are pronounced like a flemmy 'c'. The word could never be "chewgat". Can't stand ignorance.

  • @TheWhistlingGypsy That's mostly true, but you have to account for different dialects...

  • @xtremlyrandomgirl i thought i did account for different dialects! My mam's from Ulster and she doesn't speak like this woman, my dad's from Munster and doesn't speak Irish like this woman, I have friends from Connacht and they don't speak like this woman, and I'm from Leinster and definitely don't speak like her ha!

  • @TheWhistlingGypsy You took the words right out of my mouth!

  • @TheWhistlingGypsy THANK YOU!!! Shocking video altogether.. They should really take this down!

  • @TheWhistlingGypsy True,very true . I agree with you

  • @DjKitty321 thank you for supporting my mad rant haha

  • dirty yank bitch cant speak right with that penis in her mouth

  • Da fuck is dis shite?,FAIL Just get off da fucking internet like.

  • @InTheMix2010 straight up thats the truth such a pile of gomies whoever made this video

  • for feck sake that woman should be banned from trying to teach anyone gaeilge when she couldnt even pronounce the most basic of irish phrases right!!!! jaysus!!!!

  • @sexyred1611 Just curious why you're typing with an irish accent.

  • Gwahahaha! This is just terrible:)

For future reference: "Slainte" is pronounced (Slawn cha)

And "le do thoil" is pronounced (Le though hell)

Also Ta is pronounced exactly the same as the english word "thaw" and does not mean yes, its the verb "to be" ie the word "is". "Nil" also does not mean no, it means "is not". In Irish(or geailge, NOT gealic) you are suposed to answer each question with the verb it was asked with, but you can just say "sea" (sha) for yes and "ni hea" (knee ha) for no.

  • Another point for mossie2644:Basic study of Western Civilization shows that the Germanic tribes (including those in what is now the British Isles & Nordic Countries) existed independently of the various empires in the Mediterranean (including the Latin speaking Roman empire). It was a Germanic tribe that finally led to the downfall of the Roman empire, which is why Germany & Italy were known as the Holy Roman Empire for hundreds of years afterward until nobility chipped away independent kingdoms

  • @hjourdenjackson The Roman Empire invaded the British isles including Ireland and slaughtered many of the Celts. This is why some of the natives have Italian features.

  • @BerserkerInChains It's also why there are Roman ruins in the British Isles. However, the Celts had an established language and culture long before the Romans ever made contact with the British Isles: Julius Caesar wasn't sent to the Gauls because they were all good buddies and shared a common language. The Gauls were closer to Celts and the Germanic tribes (culturally & linguistically) at the time, and it would be hundreds of years before Rome had enough influence to shape languages.

  • @hjourdenjackson Of course, the Germanic tribes in that region were quite distinct from the more eastern ones and even so they were typically different from their neighbor tribes.

  • As a student of languages, I have to back up mossie 2644 here: only 5 languages come from Latin: French, Spanish, Italian, Portugese, & Romanian. Latin has influenced the grammar of English, & with the intermingling of languages, Latin words persist today (ad hoc, quid pro quo, etc). However, there are multiple language families, & Latin is only 1. Gaelige is another, as are Germanic, Cyrillic, Greek, & even Sanskrit! Look up proto-indo-european to see the european language family tree!

  • sláinte CHUG-AT? oh dear god fail!! :L It should be pronounced hug-at xD

  • Comment removed

  • they make us look like a bunch of ejits... no one actually says this stuff :-P the prounication is totally wrong aswell :-P

  • if some one started talkin to me like dat wit an american accent id smack de fuckin head of dem

  • dia duit means god be with you. good day is la maith. the irish alphabet was around about 800 years before the roman one dont know where your getting your info from!!!!

  • @mossie2644 well actually there talkin about how all languages came from latin, so your wrong

  • @MrSLaKoNe1

sorry it's you who's wrong the celtic tribes came from northern germany and spread to many different places they evolved seperate from and remained an enemy of rome throughout their existance. one tribe who settled in the north of spain were the geal. under the leadership of milisus the geale they went to ireland because of the encroaching roman empire. they were the first gealic celts to arrive in ireland. but trust in one thing only the romance languages came from latin!!!!!

  • @mossie2644 Remember theyre talking about the ALPHABET, not the language. the way we write (ie what you see here) or its traditional Irish varient, which tends to have more round characters and sometimes looks a bit like Cyrillic or Greek, and as she said in that horrible fake accent, has fewer letters, is in essence based on the latin alphabet, you can't deny it. Maybe youre thinking of Ogham? that was the "original" way of writing Irish and predates latin and most other written languages...

  • we'd all think yer a bit weird cos noone speaks irish here

  • @D3m3trivs PS I dated a Greek-Australian girl for some years however I never could get to grips with the language. She was alot of fun though ;)

  • @D3m3trivs cool thanks. My info comes from the discovery channel so you know. Not only is it hard to find info on ancient Scotland it's extremely hard to get USEFUL Scotish Gaelic learning material. They stopped selling Speaking our language before I got it on DVD. The Irish are so lucky to have more support for their language. At least some of our cousins are able to retain their culture.

  • When making a Gaelic video it's important to specify Irish gaelic!!!

  • @QRAclub Oh my gosh, thank you!! I was thinking the same thing.

  • its "shlawnta" not "shlownta" or whatever... and no Irish person refers to the Irish language as Gaelic, it's Gaeilge..

  • and also its gaeilge or irish not gaelic....gaelic is the sport! GET IT RIGHT!!!

  • @musicfreakme91 gaelic is the Scotish language.

And just to add, Celtic with an "S" sound as in Seltic is a sports team. Celtic with a "K" sound (Keltic) Refers to the original inhabitants of the UK and Ireland (if you don't count the Picts). For those that are interested, the word Celt comes from the Greek word Keltos meaning Barbarian. They got upset cause our ancentors sacked Athens while migrating from the Caucuses to Britain.

  • They may have gotten a few wrong but Gaelic is a correct spelling

  • FAIL. The narrator is simply a garden variety bad actress.

  • slainte chugat??? how retarded are these videos!!!

  • @musicfreakme91 Just say Sláinte and drop the rest

  • Comment removed

  • @brockschoenbeck i know like, i learned irish for 14 years, these vids are so stupid though they cant even get the pronunciation right!! ???

  • wow dis is so bad even d title is rong!!!!n d pruncistion is desperate!!!lol

  • I know this is horrible pronunciation and I'm just learning.

  • Wrongness, so so much wrongness surrounding this. Pronunciations are wrong, Tá and Níl are incorrectly used, and the language is Gaeilge. Gaelic is a sport.

  • I love Ireland. I think the names are so beautiful :)

  • This is pathetic! The pronunciation is all wrong of sláinte (it should be 'slawnta' not 'shlawnta') and for chugat (there's not even one of the dialects that says 'chug-it', it's 'khoo-it'). As for her yes and no, that's just plain wrong! Tá is the verb for 'it is' and níl means 'it is not', yes and no are 'sea' (shaa) and 'ní hea' (nee haa)

    Stupid howcast!

  • Is she pronouncing "Dia duit" as "duit" or "guit?" I can't tell.

  • Embarrassing... Only like 2% of the country speak "Gaelic" as their first language, and all of those have English. Come to Ireland, but don't try and speak a language most people don't understand...

  • Pretty easy pronunciation! the key is to remember what you are saying lol

  • lol chugat sounds like chug it !! get it cuz its irish ;)

  • ne maith liom a video seo

    :(

  • LOL WHO CARES IRELAND ISNT REAL

  • @serenitybond fuck you you fucking cunt ireland is the best country in de world if you say anything like that ever again 'chuirigh me bata adhmad suas do thón'

  • hiii. are you a mythological creature?

  • no im just a very patriotic 13 year old

  • its a country of drunks

  • Your just stereotyping

No one likes people like that

  • well if your american you fat fuck would think that wouldnt you stop being so stereotypical. how would you like it if i called you all fat !!!do unto others as you would like done to your self

  • im not american, im scottish, you drunken irish

  • untill someone breaks out of that stereotype then im sticking with my statement

  • @dp17197 im not american, im scottish, you drunken irish

  • o god help you the only thing worse than american is scottish

  • The Irish are just scared of the scotts because were a breed of warrior like no other. The Scottish are amazing fighters now that's the truth being stereotypes, anyway, we're blowing this thing out of proportion, BANG!

  • yur right lets just agree to disagree

  • yes

  • @dp17197 kiss my american ass!!!

  • yeah... nice try guys. Should have included amadán and óinseach because with these basics the people using the guide might be hearing it quite a bit.

  • one question.....whats key Gaelic?.....o_O

  • Gaelic is the traditional language of Ireland.

  • and scotland

  • @Kruglles Actually the national language of Ireland is called Irish, oddly enough....

  • oh, cool.

Well it is a old language that people in Ireland don't really speak that much anymore, right?

  • Oh wow. Ya know, there are about 10,000 people who would literally kill you for saying that, but luckily I'm not one of them! But from a practical point of view, it's not spoken that much. About a hundred schools are taught through Irish (mine included) and there are certain areas in Ireland in which Irish is spoken all the time! So if you're gonna come to Ireland, make sure you don't make that mistake!

  • prionsias is right and wrong at the same time 1.people like me would kill you for saying that 2. there be alot more people wantin your head than just 10000

did you know that more than 50000 people are currently taking part in a cross country run around reland just for the sake of celebrating or language

i will be running more than 20 km 2morrow just for the craic

  • jaysus, so many errors!!! tá sé úfááááásach!!!

  • @ni00ni ye yanks are shite at pronunciation ... to all you fat fuck out there dont try to be irish cause your not

  • is duine Eireanach mé haha

  • @dp17197 don't call me a fuckin yank when i'm from Limerick okay?

  • no not you all the people in howcast your clearly (like me) very proud of your native language im from kildare

  • @ni00ni yank. Who the hell uses that

-just you people. I guess all the rain soaks your brains.

  • @dp17197 you again.i'll have to slap you down punk

  • sorry the no was for another comment!!!!!!

  • So according to comments they have a bunch of things wrong here. So this should be called "How to Look Like a Jackass in Ireland". Ireland sounds like an amazing place to live btw.

  • @supersloth3 thanks its cool here howcast should just not try

  • @supersloth3 If you're not worried about being blown to hell by the IRA. May be a wee bit better nowadays but the presence is there.

  • It's Gaeilge not Gaelic and they got some pronunciation wrong!

  • no and do you even speak it

  • I hate the way they said Ireland!

    And It's Gaeilge NOT Gaelic!

  • Its Gaeilge not Gaelic and its le do thoil not le d'thoil

  • Ní dóigh liom gur é "shlawinte chuggat" an tslí cheart chun "sláinte chughat" a rá.....

  • gaeilge, not gaelic. gaelic is a sport here. anyway i live in ireland and I know all of these words.

  • hey what does conas a ta tu mean my teacher told me to look for the definition it's gaeilge i think but can you tell me what it means

  • how are you

  • cool then im not going to fail the test my teacher is going to give

  • Lol yeahh

  • Hows it going

  • how are you

  • I think this language sounds soo cool

  • it is cool but dont learn it based on this video the pronuciation is all wrong

  • is mor an naire e seo- cad a dearfadh Flaithri O Maolchonnaire?
