I don't get why so many English people don't like the Germans. The English are descended from the anglo-saxons, a Germanic people, we have lots in common with each other. OK. I would like to say a few things and get some others cleared up.

1. This was only composed by John Williams, not written. A different, but worse, version was used in Last Crusade but nonetheless this is a version Williams composed.

2. Even though this was written in the 1800s to remember the battle of Konnigratz Hitler favoured this tune and used it in many of his marches. It is a pity that this was remembered due to Hitler and not for it's origional purpose.

The pomp and circumstance, and the theatrics of it all makes me want to jump up and do a big SEIG HEIL without any regard to the politics of it. It was pure, sheer genius in terms of the patriotic achievement of the Third Reich, and that is something that I think it is safe to say exclusively as a fan of history. Even if it was misguided, and even if it was brief, for a short time Hitler did indeed give his Nation somethin gin which it could believe. Totalitarianism never looked so good.

While having something to believe in greater than oneself is very important, The problem with the Reich was that it idealized not a set of principles, but a mortal man. A recipe for disaster. Also, the whole lack of emotion and compassion in the ideology (never mind the hatred) made it rather inhuman. It was a bad kind of mind fuck. Pomp and circumstance and uniforms were not central - everyone had it.

We talk lots about ideals, about embracing or supporting, or fighting for them; but Hitler went a step beyond that. Him and Germany were interchangable in the context of the Nazi social model embraced then.

It also forces some kind of democratic system since no man is at the top. This works if principles are put before men.
