@silu81 This bothered me when I first saw the movie. Fenelon was transferred from Auschwitz to Bergen-Belsen, which was liberated by the British. The movie doesn't make this very clear -- perhaps that part of the story ended up on the cuttting-room floor.
This was the film that coursed me to try to understand the Nazis. I was eleven when I first got to see it. Till then the war to me was all John Wane, Ealing Studios flicks and excitement. I have had the good fortune of knowing two death camp survivors and a guy that looked after quislings after the war ended. The Nazis are something that should not be forgotten as they demonstrate the inhumanity of man and the way governments can sale a lie so big it becomes a truth.
For those too young to remember, this film caused a sensation when it was aired on CBS in 1980. For one, T.V. movies rarely if ever ran for three hours. Also, this was, I think, the first broadcast where there were no commercial interruptions for the last 45 minutes or hour or so. It's graphic depictions of life in Auschwitz (which had been predated by the miniseries "Holocaust") were treated by the media with the greatest gravitas.
Such a horribly sad film...yet beautiful because she was able to keep the humanity inside her alive...I'm amazed at what people can do to each other and still consider themselves human...
@stingotz52 I think Vanessa Redgrave is extraordinary in the role. And no offence, Barbra may be a lovely actress and singer, but this sort of role is way out of her range. Besides being Jewish and a 'star', it is laughable that anyone would even consider her for this role. Redgrave owned it.
I, like some others have been looking for this for a long time. A very powerful and must see movie. Thank you for taking the time inuploading for people to watch.
Lovely but very, very sad movie. I wish the reporter at the end had just let her sing the Marseillaise without interrupting with his rotten translation. Most people already know at least the gist of its lyrics.
Barbra Streisand was originally offered the role of Fania Fenelon. Streisand resembles the real Fenelon much more than Vanessa Redgrave, who ultimately took the part.
I remember when this aired on TV. Well made.. Everyone should see it!! Thank you for sharing it with the world!

Thank you for the upload!
The conditions for the jewish women at Birkineau were worse than for any other group (e.g. Czechs , Gypsies) and that says alot. It was a death camp.

I don't remember seeing this until 1983 or so when it was on HBO. Back when there was only HBO. I'm glad to see it again.
