Wrong, a blockbuster does not have to be about larger than life characters. There are plenty of novels that are very down to Earth and capture people's imagination. It's more about being able to relate. A novel must be believable (characters and plot) or the reader can't immerse themselves in the narrative.
However. I agree that there is some useful stuff here. My problem is with the instant boast (write instant blockbusters...)
Name some examples, they will likely be exceptions that prove the rule. Most larger than life characters were originally smaller than life nobodies before making their ascent to greatness. Harry Potter (orphan), the Pevensie children (war refugees), Luke Skywalker (not in a book, but literally a water farmer) Bilbo Baggins.
Ignore the naysayers, great lecture. Both entertaining and informational.
