My cousin was going to be 16 years old when he was imprisoned for being "Albanian nationalist and separatist" in 1987. He was a school boy who protested to oppose the decision of Communist Party to ban the Albanian language from the schools. He was sentenced to 6 years for organizing this protests. I went after a year to visit him in a prison. He was a different man.

Nationalism didn't trigger the death of Yugoslavia. The USA passed a law in late 1991 refusing to deal directly with the SFRY any more as an independent country for the purpose of foreign aid. It declared in that law that it would only deal with the component republics. After that, you can send in any infiltrators underground to intensify the trouble, and the country explodes, and is conveniently annexed to the EU which can use its oil pipeline & its waterway to the Adriatic.
