Amazing to think that this was before the album recording. The perfectly written and already precise tune tells of the wealth of talent that is Suzanne Vega. As for the performance... perfect.
@wazmacmusic Actually, both of these songs were already recorded - Cracking on her 1st album from '85, Ironbound on her 2nd from '87. Other parts of the concert (Part 3/4) have 'new' songs on them, i.e. Men In a War.
@mycommentuserid For my money she is the most underated female singer/ songwriter of the last 30-40 years. It is sad to see girls like Brittny spears and lady gaga become millionares with 1/10th (and thats being extremely generous) the talent she has, while she remains in obscurity. LOL I had solitude standing on tape for years then heard fancy poultry on a radio at a mall. I hadn't thought about her in a long time I just downloaded her discography.
suzanne vega is a fucking songwriting genius.i've met her and she comes across as a sort of cosmopolitan, nose in the air kind of bitch. but her in-person persona (driven by whatever insecurities might exit) has nothing to do with her art.from cracking to widow's walk she's created moving sweet sadness with her melodies.i can't imagine not wanting to listen to her in the future.
My favorite song of Susanna. My first vinil

eldrian2. I totally agree, although the meaning of the line "wings are nearly free" escapes me. Can you shed some light on that for me?

Don't worry about meaning... just enjoy!

Allow me.. it is such a line that makes Suzannes lyrics, poetry to me.
I feel no need to have a rational explanation for something that simply appeals to me.
I like how this line gives a totally different context to both the lyrical idea to have wings, and to be free.
Both won't allow you to fly.

"Ironbound" is one of the most provocative, symbolic songs of hers----moving and sad and urging.....
"wings are nearly free".

Sweet guitar at the end. So deep and transcendent.

After I heard these songs, I immediately went looking for my copy of Solitude Standing. Couldn't Find it though, *sob*

Both of her early disc are very good. Her music has a way to touch.

@Zodibigh Very true, but they were LP's not discs. cd's had not been invented yet

@bigrigbob2010 Actually, they were on cassettes, too. We sometimes referred to records as "discs" then, as you probably remember!
Regardless of the medium, this woman is a marvel, isn't she?

@bigrigbob2010 I owned both in disk (LP) but CD's were available in 1985 however.

this is a great melody. I've taught it to my girlfriend on guitar. it has a great atmosphere, we could feel that place, Ironbond section.

thinking back, it probably wasn't too long after her divorce and the death of her brother tim. i was wrong in not cutting her some slack.

How long ago did you meet her? I met her 4 & 5yrs ago & didn't get that vibe at all. Actually she seemed like just the opposite.
