What an amazing band...Punk is not a musical style but more of an ethos. Television were definitely a punk band....Ive never heard this song before but it fits right in with what they were doing in the 70's....and I agree, Marquee Moon is splendid cover to cover. The guitar work is brilliant..Im still trying to figure out what they were doing on most of it...and my favorite line from the whole record - "...I fell into the arms...of Venus de Milo."...Fucking brilliant!!
Television inspired my guitar playing since the very beginning in 1977. Too bad very few people know them. Best guitar players ever! It's very hard to follow what Tom is playing...he doesn't play on blues scales and his chord progression is very jazzy and classical at the same time.
Richard Lloyd just nails it on this song. His flamenco-ish runs really make this song work. When Television hit the stage at CBGB's in the 70's I don't think that anyone knew how influential this band would be. A boat load of current bands owe at least a partial debt to the ground breaking work that they did. Check out Interpol and Franz F. and you will see what I mean.
Great song, great delivery, great guitar work/sound, good video...This song could have been big hit with the right push...Girl looks like she shot up a real good bag!
Sounds like people still don't get Marque Moon. It's one of the unabashed masterpieces of rock and roll. Every song a masterpiece. Incredible musicianship, two of the best guitarists in the world IN THE SAME BAND. Maybe it's one of those cultural moments when you say, "Really, you don't like Marque Moon ? Maybe we shouldn't have lunch" ;) Adam and the Fucking Ants ?? Yes, we definitely shouldn't have lunch.......
@heyrubes007 Well, compared to a lot of punk rock in the era, "Marquee Moon" sounds like it can get away with being played on Top 40 radio. And don't knock "Dirk Wears White Sox" - it's still a nice punk rock record...just not one of the greatest.
@heyrubes007 You're so right! If only people started listening to this great album. Where else can anyone find such spiralling guitars, surreal lyrics and tight rhythm section?
For me this is far superior to anything on the vastly overrated "Marque Moon" LP. I mean, it's an okay record and we all know the two guitarists can certainly play but it doesn't even come close to Adam and the Ants "Dirk wears white socks". Btw Lloyd Cole has without a doubt ripped off Verlaine's irritating vocal style!
@MisAnnThorpe Adam and the Ants certainly wore a lot more makeup than Television did. I'll give you that, but calling "Marquee Moon" vastly overrated, well...pay less attention to lyrics and more attention to the way the guitars weave together.
@mnwalke I can assure you that I've given the lyrics minimal attention. I've tried to get into "Marque moon" but it just isn't the incredible record that the music critics always made it out to be. Three years later, Talking Heads released "Remain in light". Now that's a GREAT record!
I honestly wish I could start enjoying complete films and television shows at youtube, however it's honestly too bad that is definitely never going to happen. #VIDEOPOSTERID#, which is exactly why I'm choosing stream episodes (.) net at this moment to enjoy the tv shows and movies and youtube for every thing else!
Television is the eponymous third album by American art punk band Television. The album was released in 1992, fourteen years after the band's second studio album and subsequent break up in 1978. A video for "Call Mr. Lee" was filmed and aired on MTV to limited play.
I just read about them in "Babylon's Burning - from Punk to Grunge" by Clinton Heyling.....really good book about the NY scene the London scene and what came after...till Cobains death. Some rock historians believe that the punk ride began with the seminal Stooges, MC5, New York Dolls, Television, Ramones, Blondie and continued in London with the Pistols, Clash, etc..coming back in to Seattle where it assumed different forms and died with Cobain.
Hi! I 'm looking for a song listening 25 years ago from this band! like that: "sometimes i forget taht we supposed to be in love, sometimes i forget my position". If u have news... Thanks!
This song is really great! I've never heard of these guys before, but I'm enjoying this. Not a big fan of the guys voice, but this style is about so much more than that.
We are big fans of Television and the new wave scene. If you could have a listen to our stuff (click our name and it will take you to our videos) and let us know what you think it would be much appreciated. Thanks
I will make note of that. I like music a great deal.
Might I in turn reccomend "Please Kill Me" by Legs McNeil and Gillian McCain. Quite possibly the best book written on the subject of 1970's era punk rock in existance. Not a great source for the london stuff or anything post 1979, but essential for everything that came before. If you aren't already familliar with it of course...
I got this book as a Christmas present this year, and I've been reading it for the last month and a half or so. I'm almost finished and yes, it's is a great book really informative as far as the punk rock scene goes in New York.
For amps in the old days, live at least, it seemed to be Ampeg VT-22s and Fender Super Reverbs. For shows since this reunion they seemed to use Vox AC-30s. Lloyd has stuff like old Supros, and Verlaine used a Mesa Boogie combo in some stuff you can find here over the years. The tone is more in their fingers and imaginations than gear, though...
I don't doubt they trememdously influenced punk; but I see a more direct link to the Punk sound from bands like "the Sonics" (Listen, for example to 'he's waiting' ).
Verlaine uses a Jazzmaster or Jaguar with really heavy strings, which has something to do with it - Lloyd almost always uses a Strat. In the late 70s they used Deluxe Reverbs exclusively but this is an early 90s recording.
My favourite bit is Lloyd's bit of insane guitar-strangling from 3:06-3:22 or so.
