@CDMVette Probably filled it with water to preserve the weight distribution. A full tank on a Focus would be (if my numbers are right) around 100lbs, which is pretty significant. Then again, they used mannequins instead of full-weight test dummies so their concern for precision might be less than I'd assumed.

In the head on crash test both car ideally decelerate from 120 mph to zero the same rate as crash to static concrete wall.

But you have to think too did they doctor the crash to make it look that way ie set it up to convence people their car was better? I have seen some old 70's metal cars hit telephone poles going a hundred miles an hour and the drive walk away no scraches but killed the car, where as the plastic cars I have seen hit the same pole the driver died on impact.

I think this is a pretty interesting piece of footage. However, you need to keep in mind what it would represent. If it were to be related to a car-to-car crash it would be two Ford Focus 3-door hatchbacks colliding head on at a closing speed of 240 mph (120 mph each). That would mean that each Focus was traveling at or very near its limit at the moment of impact.

The likelihood that you would actually observe such an occurrence in the real world is pretty slim.

Better explanation: If Car 1 is driving in a certain speed & angle, we call the force of the impact "X". If Car 2 drives in the exact same angle & speed (in opposite direction) the force of the impact will be "X". The force a wall generates to "stop" a car running in to it will be EXACTLY as big as the force of the car. In this case X. And both cars has force X. So it's like hitting a wall.
