  • Beautiful carol. Am listening to it during Morning Prayer here in CA at 10;38a (PST) in the morning. :)

  • "...and the glory of the Lord shone round about them: and they were sore afraid.

"And the angel said unto them, 'Fear not: for, behold, I bring you good tidings of great joy, which shall be to all people. For unto you is born this day in the city of David a Saviour, which is Christ the Lord.'" And suddenly there was with the angel a multitude of the heavenly host praising God, and saying, " Glory to God in the highest, and on earth peace, good will toward men."

  • is there a version of this song that is sung by Mitchal Crawford?(i want it 4 cristmas.)

  • Wonderful! Except the last line, the most important of the song,is obscured by the volume...but beautiful singing!

  • STEPHEN!!

  • What is santa's favourite pizza? Go to 0:18 for the punchline

  • 1:56 If I was the page, I would have soiled myself at this point

  • I am not a Christian but this song reminds me what Christianity should be about, helping one's fellow man inspite of circumstance.

  • @dsarkissian

Totally agree; Jesus seems as good a man/idea as any to remember for two weeks of the year. Now if only we could convince everyone to give up two weeks a year to Socrates I'd be a very happy man! lol

  • @dsarkissian it's all about the unconditional love #loveyourenemy #goodsamaritan

  • Good King Wenceslas pray for us always.

  • This is such a good carol. It not only has the festive spirit, but has a wonderful message; that of giving to the poor and needy. It's something we can all learn from. Merry Christmas

  • I love this version, and think it's so cute how this boy rolls his "r's" like the Scottish.

  • This is my favorite Christmas song!

  • Yes, this version is in Carols for Choirs

  • Beautiful !

  • how does Good King Wenceslas like his pizza?

    Deep and crisp and even.

  • "Therefore Christian men be sure, wealth or rank posessing, he who will now bless the poor shall yourself find blessing!"

  • @JordanAP96 Truth in that.

  • would anyone happen to know if the sheet music for this arrangement is available?

  • @handelfan610 This is the arrangement by Reginald Jacques, and it is easily found in Carols for Choirs 1 (that would be the green book in that series). It was not until about two years after I saw this video that I sort of stumbled upon this arrangement in Carols for Choirs.

  • Does anyone know who the treble was?

  • Eeek, Thomas Allen!

  • The baritone soloist here is none other than Sir Thomas Allen! Thanks very much for sharing this!

  • THANK YOU AWESOME :):):)

  • MERRY CHRISTMAS

  • A heart-warming carol, one of the best in the world of Christian mythology.

  • @teddy1066 yep, so much better than jewish or islamic mythology. and tonnes better than atheist nonsense.

  • The fellow doing singing the bass counterpoint was excellent. Of course, the rest of the choir and the soloist fellow were also excellent too. Very sweet!

  • weird

  • God, I started crying hearing this... beautiful! Thank you for posting :)

  • Ouch, not the best treble soloist I've ever heard!

  • How lovely. Simply beautiful. This is my favorite Christmas Carol because of the wonderful message it contains. Thank you for posting this. It has really put me in the Holiday spirit.

  • I had no idea Stephen Harper was such a good singer!!

  • I had no idea Stephen Harper was such a good singer!!

  • Six people are obviously Satanists

  • @kamelion7 maybe they just didn't like the rendition? Nothing very satan-y about that. :/

  • @kamelion7 nothing wrong with being a satanist... is there?

  • @londongaucho No, nothing wrong with being a Santaist. :P

  • Are the two solo singers supposed to be the King and the Page? I thought that might be the case judging by the particular lyrics that they're singing!

  • @Inkyminkyzizwoz its Thomas Allen and some kid

  • @MrMrmike5 What meant was is it the case that the man is singing the lyrics that are supposed to be the words that the King said and the boy singing the words of the Page?

  • @Inkyminkyzizwoz Yes, Sir Thomas Allen sings the part of the King and the treble (whose name I do not know) sings the page.

  • @Fozzymaple Bet his voice has probably broken by now!

  • Czech king Wenceslas (in czech - Václav) :-)

  • OH Yes! God bless Sir David Willcocks!!!!!

  • Ha! :D Love the song!

  • Beautiful and two good soloists. I did not know this Chritmassong but i very much like it

  • What a beautiful and heartwarming video of this wonderful, traditional song. This has always been my favorite Christmas Carol - as it deals with giving and love and concern. Things the world can always benefit from. Thank you for posting this. I will watch it again and again.

    2010

    JESYS IS LORD

  • Song o nasem kralu Vaclavovi, Dobry kral Vaclav..njn, jako Maja, taky prezpivana do ruznych jazyku :-D lol

  • Thanks! MandyJ it is really nice that we see this christmas, i also pray that you have good fun, in this blessed day that our LORD and Saviour JESUS CHRIST was born, and i wish all of us happy Christmas and New Year to come in few days. may we all be blessed in Jesus Name. Amen!

  • Jesus was probably born closer to easter given the differences in calendars and the fact that christmas is a hijacked holiday bringing in several pagan holidays from Rome and Germanic tribes.

  • Jesus was born in Bethlehem, which is Hebrew for the sign of Virgo. Study the dates, when Zechariah was in the temple, he had to be off duty when John was conceived. Then study the relative ages of John and Jesus, that puts Jesus's birth in the summertime. I don't have chapter and verse for you, but John was born in Spring, and Jesus half a year later.

  • im singing this for my christmas concert 2morrow

  • Thank you ! How lovely to hear this on this very very snowy day in Washington DC, just a few days before Christmas. This is how this carol was meant to be sung.

  • Everytime I go past Seaham on the train I think of Sir Thomas Allen - whom I would not have found out about were it not for this video. Thank you very much for that!

His voice is incredibly powerful. Wow.

  • My choir, Brecon Cathedral Choir sang there, not long ago. Amazing place to sing in.X

  • I heard this right after the Morehouse Spelman version both excellent in their own way

  • Morehouse/Spelman has Wencelas on their version

  • The young chorister was bit shakey at first, but he soon sorted it out, and otherwise it's just brilliant.

  • Merry Christmas and Happy Feast of St. Stephen!

  • Greetings, and a Merry Christmas to all from Shreveport, Louisiana!

  • Merry Christmas From Ballston spa, New York, USA!

  • Awesome singing. Thank you. Merry Christmas!

  • That's Sir Thomas Allen - megastar! One of our finest (UK) opera singers.

  • Far OUT, that Tenor has a fantastic voice!

  • To my ear, he sounded more like a baritone, but I agree, he does have a great voice, and extremely powerful.

  • Who is the wonderful baritone soloist, and for that matter who is the treble soloist?

  • My God!!! that gave me goose bumps.

    fantastic

  • ellow!!!

    this is video beutifulllllll

  • death by killing by one of the conspirators and then being killed himself. It is said that the large statue of Wencelas in St. Wenceslas Square will come to life and defend the motherland from the enemies of Czech with the sword of Bruncvik. I did a short study on Wenceslas at school for bonus credit haha.

  • Wenceslaus himself is venerated as Saint Wenceslaus and is the main patron saint of the Czech state. He was extremely generous to the poor, orphans, and widows and did great charity works. He was overrun by Henry I because of his agreeance with the Magyars to an anti-Saxon alliance. Boleslaus, his brother along with three assasins killed him in order to succeed Wenceslas. He is cannonized in the Czech Republic as St. Wenceslas. The paige that is mentioned in the story avenges Wenceslas'...

  • i love this song! i get to sing the part of the page this thursday for my choir's Christmas concert.

  • In this age of religious illiteracy, how many even know what the feast of Stephen is? In the USA, only the liturgical churches,i.e.the Roman C's, the Episcopal, and higher up the candle Lutherans, the E. Orthodox but few others. Dec.26 for the info of any "Bible Belt" Christians reading this. Now feel free to return to your "praise" band and your attempt to monopolize the word Christian.

  • @brassspitoon St Stephen's is Dec 26, in the UK we celebrate Boxing Day on this day. It's mostly observed in Ireland and Scotland... Stop being pedantic to people online... you sound like a sad bible basher.

  • Soloists are fantastic!

  • "King Wenceslaus" was actually a duke named Vaclav ruled Bohemia around 929. Duke Vaclav was a devout Christian known for his generosity to orphans, widows, and the poor. Tragically, his reign was shortened when he was assassinated and was honored as a martyr.

  • i read that he was assassinated by his twin brother, who wanted to overtake wenceslaus and start a pagan revolution.

  • i never knew that, how charming, a decent King then, great stuff, one of my favourite carols.

  • wow

  • this is i think the most wonderful arrangement of this song! every component of this song makes it seem just about perfect. 5 stars and favorite!

  • freakin awesome singing!!!!!

  • York in England is an absolutley beautiful city. Lincoln is very similar in its appearance and I always make the effort to visit them at Christmas.

I went to Lincoln in December 2007 and they had carol singers on the little cobbled streets, a huge choir in the Cathedral, Christian prayers, everything traditional about Christmas - it even snowed. Would highly recommend going there for a true feeling of Christmas.

  • i have to sing this song in Advance Mixed Choir

  • absolutely gorgeous!

  • happy christmas to you.

    i love chrismas music.

  • same here and a very Merry Christmas to you my friend!

not long to go now isn't it?

  • I agree! (Although, technically, Good King Wenceslas isn't a Christmas hymn. The feast day of St. Stephen is December 26th, the day after Christmas.)

  • Great to see this again! I did have it on VHS once upon a time. I love this descant.

Do you have their "I Saw Three Ships" arrangement with the Northumbrian Pipes from the same programme?

  • if we all could listen to the words, do 1 good deed for a stranger, the payment should be "pass it on to another"

  • You're not kiddin a treat!! Excellent. Thanks for the great post.

  • Really excellent as yet told!

Someone knows who is the arranger?

I have this same version recorded on a Naxos CD (by another great English Choir) but it's not related...

  • wats so bad about this comment?

  • Is the baritone soloist Thomas Allen?

  • heartwarming. thank you much.

  • Jolly nice indeed. I don't like Christmas at all really, but this carol is fantastic.

  • very nice rendition. Thank you

  • my favorite minster
