Chuck Yeager himself said the F-20 was the best fighter he had the oportunity to fly.

Brazilian F-5 are now modernized, with HMD, data link, new radar, avionics of 4th generation, glass cockpit... and derby and python IV missiles. In few years brazilian F-5 will have the A-Darter too. A very nice aircraft =D

Im airliner pilot and i was a FAM (mexican ir force) pilot, and had a chance to fly the F-5 and it's a very handy plane and it really kick asses. my favorite plane over F-18 or F-14, even F-22.

The older F jets were more radical than the new ones today, they are just untouchable in dog fights, manual all the way, screw all the tech planes today, nothing can touch style and skill that the old Fs require :)

The plane becomes more automated in terms and easier to actually fly, but with that extra brain space the designers can cram in more sophisticated weaponry. Things have moved from Rudder/Stick towards Weapons Manager, its the way things have always been.

F-5 has better stability.. slower accel..

better Avionics and stronger radar..

1) It is a teaching tool for the students. For many of them, this is their first real-world BFM dogfighting experience. They are flying against instructors, so what good would those instructors be if they didn't instruct at points.

2) For safety reasons. In the BFM training exercises there is a 500 foot bubble rule, and numerous other safety rules to prevent midair collisions. That is explained more a little after this part in the movie.
