I just found a baby kitten last week myself. I begged, pleaded, but my research parnter says three cats is enough. At least he agrees with me on not handing her over a shelter that doesn't have a no-kill policy. She's just four weeks old!

You should try to get her to a 'half-way house' for cats. Some shelters have that available ( at least they do in Sweden) where volenteirs care for the cat/cats in their home until a permanent home can be found. They always make sure there's at least two cats in each home too, so they won't be lonely.

Either way You should make sure the 'no-kill' shelter actually is a 'no-kill' shelter - apparently there's been instances of false advertisement in the us... :[

It's a fact that mother cats can and do abandon even their entire litters. Cats usually make pretty good mommies, but not all of them do, just as not all humans are good and responsible parents.
