  • i am a classical violinist (although not yet a refugee although intrigued by fiddling and certainly nothing more than an amateur even after 14 yrs training haha), and i am intrigued by the tuning. do most bluegrass fiddler depart from the traditional tuning in 5ths? (i.e. GDAE)

  • I believe most bluegrass fiddlers stick to standard tuning... This style of fiddling is considered "old-time" fiddling (versus bluegrass fiddling which usually tends to be jazzier, notier, and incorporates some improvisation). A lot of old-time fiddlers play tunes in the key of A out of this AEAE tuning partly because they can drone on adjacent strings a lot in this tuning.

  • You can also play the melody on the high strings then switch to playing it on the the two lower strings easily in this tuning. In general old-time fiddlers and banjo players often incorporate a number of different tunings in their playing.

  • Have you really been playing only a year? No way!! Are you a classical violin refugee? :)

  • Thanks for the comment. Nope, I never played classical, but have been playing old-time banjo for a number of years. At the time of this video I'd only been playing fiddle about a year. Now I'm at about two years of playing.

  • Well done!

  • Good job, my boy.
