Oh my god, she was a genius. As a singer, I am completely in awe of how much emotion she brings to the performance, without all the pyrotechnics a la Idol that add nothing to the song and actually dilute the humanity of the singer. Beautiful lady, amazing artist, viva Mahalia!
-Woah this is wayyy b4 i was born i cant believe she is my cousin i guess talents pass down <3 i love her voice is amazing no wonder so many ppl llovedd hher
Herbert Hoover had a file on MLK. I wonder if he had one on Mahalia. They were both under Gods blessed guidance. The America of old money and white privilage will never sing along to the spirit that pours out of this glorious and humble music. If America can ever be united, I don't believe it's in my lifetome or that of my childrens. I think that the old curse of slavery will be on her till Jesus' return.
This is my favorite Mahalia Jackson song. When I get to New Jerusalem I'm going to sing in the choir with Mahalia & the angels and my voice is going to work : )
@greenpilgrim50 Greetings and Peace! Thank you for your response. I feel the same way. I will tell you this day folks are getting meaner and meaner and will do anything to you and feel that they have don God a service. Those songs help me to stay strong and face life's daily challenges. I really appreciate the opportunity to communicate with those of like minds. Peace be with you and stay strong.
@davionbattle1 Thank you for your response. I am trying to find someone who could record that version taped that day. I would like to record all the songs that she sang that day. Those songs keep me going when life beats me down. They are really anointed.
My Grandmother used to play her all the time and as a kid I liked it but never understood her Music until i got older, oh the appreciation and understanding i have for this God created voice is immeasurable ! Nothing like foot stomping music from the old days ! May God return us to a place where Family meant Unity and Bond. We lost it!
This woman has sent chills up my spine since i was 3 years old I'm 48 now and every time I hear her amazing voice I still get chills and a lump in my throat now. She is a creation of God.
Raised by my great, grandmother who played Mahalia Jackson's songs 24 hours each and every day, I now realize why. This song is "special" to all of us who have had great trials and tribulations. I find this song quite inspirational. It keeps me going in the face of persecution, hindering and restraining forces the challenge me every day. Masterpiece in the realm of spiritual music in my humble opinion.
Mahalia, God bless you as you continue your further experiencing in Him and His Christ. I pray and hope to meet you on that day set aside for Him and His own. Glory be to God in The Highest!
It's interesting to me how a genre that was initially thought of as the devil's music (blues!) could eventually marry so beautifully with church music. I absolutely love this, thank you for uploading this video.
omg...i love that song and i love that woman...she was amazing and her vocals were incredible and unmatched by anyone...even today's so called singers dont come close 2 ms. mahalia...this song and all her music was meant for everyone...thank u so much ms. jackson for ur voice and ur music...thank u jesus for ms. hahalia...and thank u elfeco for uploading this gr8 vodeo...may god bless us all forever...
What I have grown to absolutely love about her, and I wish my fellow gospel singers and musicians would take inventory of, is how like a jetliner, she taxi's from the gate, she eases up the tarmac, picks up speed, and the next thing you know you are airborne, 35k feet up in GRADUAL order! The point is, SHE DIDN'T RUSH ANYTHING, she took her time and drew you into the song. It's one thing to listen to her, but to watch how The Lord convicted her is just POWERFUL (Happy 100th Birthday Mahalia!)
This was before the age of microwave gospel singing. Mahalia knows how to build a song. Don't rush it like many of these singers sing gospel today. Come out of the gate like a racehorse.
we gonna join the heavenly choir, we gonna sing and never get tired, Thank God, Thank You for being so good to me! She always gives me the pentecostal doo-dads.
I love Her voice - God has blest her - People sing gospel like its suppose to be sung...from the heart with the anointing - there is a place for entertainment and then there are songs that encourage the shekinah glory of god to be in our presence
Thank God for giving her such a great voice and an open heart to use it for Gods glory and not for her own. I feel like God is blessing us all trough her singing
If this doesn't move You? The conviction in these words and in the sound of Her voice,Thank You Jesus for Being sooooo good to Me,Hes worthy... Sooo Worthy, Call His name to get to know Him, He is a ROCK to those that are desperate. Hes waiting on You.He calls to all.
@TheGalen62 Try to find a real, Bible preaching and Holy Ghost filled church of God in your area. I strongly consider that you seek Jesus Christ through prayer and go to a Christian church.
Do what Acts 2: 38 says from the Bible, because you must be born again to see Heaven. Get to know the Lord. He really loves you and wants to save your soul from total condemnation. Believe on the Lord Jesus Christ. He is the Truth, the way, and the Life.
Do you know what year this was recorded? And what church it was in? I've played this video dozens of times - amazing, powerful, passionate performance.
Praise God for this lovely woman! Praise God for recordings so that we can be uplifted. Thank you in the name of Jesus. I give my heart to you Christ. This very moment, this very day. Please forgive me a sinner. I say it before men so that I stand in your love and acknowledge you as my savior. Amen, Amen. Thank you Jesus!
If somebody can sing better and with more emotion than Mahalia, please don't even bother to tell me about it. I don't wanna hear it. I don't think I could stand it.
A beautiful thing was happening to America. Imagine the impact of that era.... I can only imagine.
I don't know. This goes mainly to fellow African Americans, but it still applies to everyone, and all there is to say is that we as americans are losing our sense of community these days. Life isn't an a battle for superiority. We all can get together, and accomplish the same things. Children today need to learn from this era to help build a stronger, more American country.
@SilentBlues23 We need to follow what the Word of God says, have our self right with the Lord Jesus Christ and stay close to God. By "staying right" with Jesus, is by first doing what Acts 2: 38 says from the Bible and keeping our walk with Him.
@SilentBlues23 really thats 4 everybody cause it aint just african americans so get ur facts right... and us kids arent the only ones that need 2 learn its the stupid adults 2... cause some adults just do stupid things 4 stupid re-sons... and sometimes jst 2 do it.
@SilentBlues23 I so agree with you. You have your heart in the right place. Let us stop demonizing groups/other people. This stuff has to stop. . . it was unlike Christ.
"You know my soul looked back and wondered, how did I make it over."...This video is remarkable and the expressions on the crowds face....priceless...The words touched some and shamed others in that crowd!!!
i wish the new singer, of these time would find the real soul, and sing from ther hearts, and not for money to sell and album,,,,,,, singing is a gift from god,,,,
@cyoohoos So, you've never misspelled a word a day in your life? And, anyways, who asked YOU to correct me or anyone else? Because I misspelled ONE word, the U.S. is doomed LOL? I think you are stupid if you think that's all it takes for this country to go down hill. Judging by your comment, you're probably a very lonely person with nothing better to do. This audience was desegregated because even amid civil rights struggles the nation was closer to God than it is now. More people remembered God, that's why.

This is the gospel of good news that i remember moved the folks in church so much. I appreciate all gospel. To God Be The Glory!Rosegarde1951@yahoo.com
This song by Mahalia Jackson is sooo moving knowing that it was the day before the March on Washington. It seems that the song had a "multitude of voices" of African-American ancestors of the past who seem to join in wondering "How did I get over this slavery/suffering in the land of America". A great song.
wow this is awesome this song is like history since it was before the ihave dream speech they should play this song during Mrtin Luther King Day dont know if they ever have bbut i think that would be grea a tribute to the both of them
I come to this clip so often, I think I'm personally responsible for the viewed number increasing. You'd think I'da had enough by now. Nope, I'm sure I'll be back soon. Hee hee.
Hey, I’m a young artist, & I would really appreciate it if everyone would check out my cover of Michael Bublé’s “You’re Nobody till Somebody Loves You.” Although I’m knowledgeable that Michael Bublé was not the first to record the song, my version was inspired by his rendition, nonetheless. I promise you that you will not regret giving my version of the song a listen, & it will truly knock you off of your feet! So please listen & enjoy! Thanks!
This is my favorite video on youtube. I can't begin to say how much it has meant to me over the last few years. I come back to it over and over, and every single time I listen, I get chills. The Universal Love poured through her. In this moment, she was its perfect instrument. Every time I hear her sing this, all of my little problems get put into perspective. That spirit flowing thru her gives me courage to go on. Every single time. "God said, 'Touch her in my name.'" I am touched.
I SERIOUSLY JUST DO NOT UNDERSTAND why do people GO TO VIDEOS, listen to it, and click the DISLIKE BUTTON. Why even go if you know you don't like the artist or the song? YouTube really needs to disable that feature! Pointless and stupid! Who would DARE NOT LIKE THIS?????????? Mahalia Jackson CLASSIC!!!!
@foyogood, because God gave free will to all humanity; I'm one of the 3000 who "like" it but just because 15 either truly "dislike" it or are just being funny, it is worse to take away their choice. It's like if you're african-american and you don't like Obama, you're a sellout and your voice should be silenced. We're either free or we're not and thankfully we still are free.
I cannot stop my tears this morning listening to Mahalia jackson...she is so real...unpretentious, genuine...I feel her joy! They don't sing like this today being so full of themselves...Mahaliah pours it out and there is enough JOY for every one! God rest her precious soul.
Amazing how these folks - most of them - can sit there still when Mahalia is singing her heart out! Kind of amusing...like it wasn't politically correct to praise the Lord cause of the diverse audience. Didn't matter...Mahalia made herself happy...she praised him, anyhow!
when she sings "I feel like shoutin," she's actually is shouting and she's in perfect vocal control. I love listening to her. She does naturally, while singing, what people train many years and spend untold dollars to achieve. No need to mention the emotional energy transmitted here. This voice is a treasure.
the folk that disliked this song, idk why but i juss feel the presence of the lord everytime i hear this or hear someone sing from the heart...it is so amazing...smh
Thanks Mahalia, your music brings joyfull tears to me in my time of desperation and uncertinty, praise Jesus ! love a poor white boy that your music has touched my heart !
@mrliveth I agree.....this music is for expression, not entertainment. kinda reminds me of the attitude the J.S. Bach had...he signed every piece "To The Glory Of God"
@mrliveth Boy, you ain't never lie..evrybody wants to be a superstar now..it's sickening.I just listen to the gospel my grandma use to listen to..these days it's hard to tell if u going to church or a club, shades in church?? Thank goodness for youtube.
@mrliveth Exactly, it wasnt about the riffing and the finger twirling and the haff nekkidness! It was about glorifying the MOST HIGH. No fancy moves just the beauty of the voice HE gave them. This song made me want to cry, she reminds me of my grandmother who died in 08, who also looked like her and was also a beautiful singer and song writer, though never famous, but truly missed.
So sad that we can't hear such songs about God like this from regular radio stations anymore... Because we select more ungodly political party, leaders, they make our country more away from god step by step saying " equality of all religion"; Equality? as we all see, that's the way to take away christian's right slowly & bring more Islam or Budda whatever.
so sad many christians are blind, just vote for any men or women who are against our christianity because of their color or association.
When u get to your 60"s 70's 80's and God Bless when u in your 90's , and u live to see death, desrtuction that man cause, you'll ask yourself HOW I GOT OVER, Thnk you heavenly father, MY SOUL LOOKS BACK AND WONDER HOW I GOT OVER< Think about it, There by the GRACE OF GOD, goes me
"CAKOLEY", I suggest you read my comments again. I simply stated that there were 15 (FIFTEEN) people out of thosands that viewed this AWESOME video and for some same reason they didn't like it. I asked what could they not SEE!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!! You must have me confused with someone else.
Testament to a group of people who could get together and stood strong in a time in history where they were truly under hardship. I'm glad that the video shows the crowd too, its nice to see how touching the song is to everybody. I'm unsure of the lady dancing at the end though. However, I guess I can't judge. Fantastic voice, I tingle every time I hear it!
No one can call themselves a fan of this gospel queen, until you can own her entire vinyl record collection like myself and you have not heard her until you hear her on vinyl nuff said!! Vinyl Rules!!! and so does Mahalia Jackson the Creator of Gospel music...........
gospel just doesnt get any better than this, amen! thank you for posting this.

This song by Mahalia Jackson is sooo moving knowing that it was the day before the March on Washington. It seems that the song had a "multitude of voices" of African-American ancestors of the past who seem to join in wondering "How did I get over this slavery/suffering in the land of America". A great song.

Mahalia Jackson CLASSIC!!!!
foyogood 8 months ago 3
@foyogood, because God gave free will to all humanity; I'm one of the 3000 who "like" it but just because 15 either truly "dislike" it or are just being funny, it is worse to take away their choice. It's like if you're african-american and you don't like Obama, you're a sellout and your voice should be silenced. We're either free or we're not and thankfully we still are free.
bajofry13 8 months ago
@bajofry13 Well, why watch the video then???? It's that simple! You can also exercise your freedom by going to other folks videos you do like!

Didn't matter...Mahalia made herself happy...she praised him, anyhow!
ministerzel 9 months ago
when she sings "I feel like shoutin," she's actually is shouting and she's in perfect vocal control. I love listening to her. She does naturally, while singing, what people train many years and spend untold dollars to achieve. No need to mention the emotional energy transmitted here. This voice is a treasure.

ILLSLAPAHO 5 months ago
