It is worn on the head outside of the ring before the fight and inside of the ring during the "Wai kru" dance. After the fighter performs the dance his coach removes it, sometimes saying a little prayer or blessing for good luck, and then the fighters fight.

It does indeed look like a tennis racket hat though. I have never heard anyone ever say that before. It made me laugh.
