@MurphyMonster That's because typically the truck race opener at Daytona is the best of the 3 series races that weekend. From the 2 I've been to at least, they were better than the 500's that year. Awesome racing, until shit like this happens.
Tickets for those seats would probably run you around $100 a seat for a cup race. Probably $30 for trucks and nationwide. For a superspeedway race the higher up you are the better. Yes you could see the whole track from there.
What row and seat number and the price was that where you where if you don't mind me asking? Could you really see the whole track from there or did it seem that way because of the cam?
Correction: it was 2000. Thanks 88nascarracer. The trucks do NOT use restrictor plates! Quote from wikipedia: "However, restrictor plates are not used for Camping World Truck Series trucks. Rather, air intake, aerodynamic, and, eventually, a tapered carburetor spacer were implemented for those races. Combined with the aerodynamic disadvantage of the trucks, this allows NASCAR to avoid the use of such equipment for the trucks."
@cds383 People forget NASCAR planned to use restrictor plates on the Trucks after they flirted with 200 in testing and they keep the plates in reserve for them.
if this wreck were in the 70s or 80s geoff would've been dead easily. those cars even 10 years ago were safe. geoff's car and the fence absorbed most of the impact. and all he had was some burns and a couple broken bones considering he could've died right there
This comment has received too many negative votesshow
that's exactly why Nascar and it's fans both suck. Most of these hillbilly fucks only go to see crashes. It's pathetic. Once again, this just proves why F1 is the highest form of motorsport.
I beg to differ. There are plenty of people that go to the race just to experience it and, yeah, see the wrecks. But the few million people that are watching every weekend aren't watching for the crashes; they're watching for good, hard racing with a great bunch of guys.
joey logano was there, some guy had him caught on tape when he video taped this crash, joey stood up and pointed in front of that guys camera during this race
thanks you again for uploading the longer version, i try 2 find all nascar, drag racing, u name it in motorsport form a spectators point of view so i know wat its like to be there.
if that was me and the radio was still working lol, i would have come on the radio and said im gonna need a new pair of pants and beer and ill be just fine, wait make that 2 beers lol. )( got stewart#14
what gets me is how this is one of the worst crashes in the history of nascar and he lived, while earnhardts didnt look all that bad but it took one of the greatest racers to ever strap up. ill be honest i remember watching this wreck and i thought he was dead once that truck started to flip.
i agree, its the shear shock on everyone in their mind thinking theirs no way he could survive, while earnhardt's crash, people were shocked he died because the crash was barely even aknolaged. and then out of no where its like "Earnhardt dies" i remember hearing about it that night and wondering how the hell it happend, its the "spectacular" that makes it the worst wreck anymore. if that makes any sense?
no his wreck was acknowledged, DW immedately said that he didn't like the angle of that hit and he was scared for Dale. I think he knew then that something bad was wrong....
yes, but their was still a crowd in victory lane and michael waltrip and everyone thought everyone was fine. it didnt look that bad, alot of drivers have been drivin to the local hospital instead of the infeild center, thats what i mean, nobody really expected him to die or even miss the next race
I saw this happen on t.v., but this video - from a spectators view - totally brought tears to my eyes and had me on my seat even though I already knew the outcome. Thanks for posting. Great video
this crash happened in 2000, and joey is 19 years old. so if that were joey he would be 10 years old. that guy is older than that. plus the uploader of this video mentioned in the description of his shorter video that it is him in the white shirt. (him as in the uploader)
After watching it again, if you watch directly after the contact with the fence (0:56) you can see the car rotate about 300 degrees or more before kinda lifting after being hit by another truck.
When the trucks first raced at Daytona they didnt use any plates, smaller carbs or tapered spaces. It was full bore 700 hp meaning these guys were doing about 190 mph in the draft. Bodine probably hit that wall at 175-180 mph. IMO it should be the same way today with the trucks they punch such a big hole in the air that it slows them down just enough. I mean look how fast these indy cars go shouldnt they have restrictor plates too?
@bigdaddymatty17 indy cars have more downforce, they are easier to control-they have six times the downforce, and the tires are twice as big, and the cars weigh half as much
also, the trucks would be doing around 210 without any spacers at daytona today, they're more aerodynamic
every time stock cars get too fast at daytona we see horrible wrecks-look at edwards and newman and martin this year in sprint cup, they got too fast this year
The trucks would probably top out at 200 mph without these stupid spacers. Yes they are more aerodynamic but they are also that much safer than they were 10 years ago. My advice to nascar is do away with the tapered spacers it makes for much better racing.
They should give the trucks back their 700 HP unrestricted at Daytona and Talladega again. On all tracks give the trucks back their 700 HP not this reduced "taper space" 600 HP crap. Racing just isnt the same as it used to be.
i've said it before and i'll say it again.... this is the absolute best representation of what it's like to actually see something like this: confusion. noone has the slightest idea what's going on, they just know it's not good. "did someone get hurt? i don't know?""who was that?""is he movin' in there?"
i've been to over 20 races by now, every time it's the same...you just wait quietly, praying for the best, watching for any sign of movement.
Isn't Joey Logano 18? so if this is 2000 then he'd be 9. Doesn't matter that was a hell of a crash good thing that fence was there or thos fans in the first few rows would be dead!!
i think i once heard logano say he'd never seen daytona before the first time he raced there, plus i've seen him at an autograph session or ten, his face is skinnier than that
and thus the truck series was 1 and done as far as unrestricted daytona races. they were averaging 200mph in the draft that day. i remember watching this live it was surreal. geoff was interviewed the next day at halifax, he said looking back, it was a miracle he made it thru that crash alive.
they were not averaging 200MPH, as a matter of fact they were averaging less than 185MPH. Even today if they were unrestricted they would remain below 200MPH, however trucks actually fly easier than cars (go figure).
I was there that day on the in field, the crash was right in front of me, I thought I experienced the end of the road for a driver. A piece of the fence from across the track landed 12 feet away, I will never forget that day.

Jesus H. Christ, I'd have clapped for him too after he survived that...
That was possibly the worst wreck in NASCAR.

Me and a friend were at this race, like 4 sections before the crash. Was amazing. Another friend of ours was taping this right where it happend and later sold his video to the local news. Crazy...
