Half the comments here are arguing over where the bagpipe came from. Hah, classic Balkans! There were all sorts of people around Mesopotamia during the Greek and Roman empires. These empires were only a loose confederation of city states. Certainly the Romans popularized the gaida in culture exchange but it doesn't mean that they were the ones who originally created it. The Thracians used it heavily. Enjoy the music for what it is.
@foobastion I agree with you. However, it was musicians in ex yu that wanted to clear out our differences and fights, but it didn't work, did it? Can't ever tame this kind of people.
Messopotamian, egypt, asian, greek, roman instrument called ask-avlos (the sack of pipes) or gaida used to be very popular in ancient blalkanic territory. After the usage of it by Romans and the exchange of culture with other nations like Gales and Celts it was rapidly spread in whole europe. names and varieties of it : veuze, muchosac, dudelsack, bock, great irish warpipes, bagpipes, great highland bagpipes, sac de gemecs, galician gaita ,the greek gaida, surdelina etc. No matter the origin, music is pure!
@ifandiev At the time bagpipes were first played there was only Rome and Byzantium. No Bulgaria, nor Serbia, nor FYR Macedonia. In the ancient times Roman Emperor Nero first mentioned Bagpipes. There is still no proof if they origin is in the lands of Balkans or Celtic forests. Either way it is a beautiful instrument and Celts do not defer much in spirit or temperament from Slavic tribes that inherited big part of Balkans and ancient Macedonia. Just enjoy music for what it is. Rhythm and melody.

The BALKAN gajda is a cousin of the bagpipes.. It was derived from celtic tribes a very long time ago during the BC years. They look similar, but have different sounds. I play an Albanian Gajda.. and its the same shit. I dont think anyone in the balkans can claim this instrument as there one, but regardless its a beautiful instruments.
Congratulations, Cory! All your 18 pieces posted (so far) here are simply AMAZING! Your dedication to the instrument resembles merging with it. Excellent job, keep pushing!
Thank you. Your playing is both masterful and accessible. I can see what you are doing and do my best to follow. Your videos are the best teaching/learning videos I have seen.
For someone who is not native macedonian it sounds awesome. Bravo
The song starts with the words"Ceniv se u popa da mu pasam guskite..." (I was making a deal with a priest to grazing his ducks or gooses ). But the real name for the song is "Sarena gajda" and it origins from the region of the city of Kumanovo

When did Tatari make Gajdi? Bulgarians have no culture, they loan most of their culture from the Macedonians.

In the book 'Macedonian folk music' by Linsey Pollak, Linsey writes the title of the song as: seniv se u popa.
A nice melody!
