I think there's a difference between having a sad life & having sad things happen to you during your life. We all experience the latter, but few of us have an overall sad life.

Bettie grew up & lived well despite having been abused. Divorce isn't necessarily a sad thing, especially if you're divorcing from a lousy spouse. Although it is true that she wasn't given royalties for her work, she did fight back, got her money & secured her old age.
