Is this song really called Monica's theme? If so, that makes sense. Everytime I hear it, I think of when David and Monica spends precious time together.
If we all look into the eye which is our soul we would know we are controlled but to care is to die, but to care is to lie. For i'm not an ok english jack but part of the pack.
I appologise for the mistake of identifying the humanoid entities at the ending as aliens. That aside, I am puzzled at how can a scene where a son (albeit an artificial one) sleeps next to his mother's corpse can be considered a happy ending and not a morbid (if not perverse) twist.
This music, this film is the epitome of our humanity. At the end we all want our mommies. To all the mommies and their children. Please don't let it end.
@decoren45 I agree. Steven Spielberg has stated that the alien ending was Stanley Kubrick's intention all along. However that may be, it left me somewhat unsatisfied, despite the macabre turn which slipped under most viewer's radar (since they were likely too busy crying): David gets to happily sleep next to his mother's corpse. This is a strange twist only Kubrick could've come up with.
@giulianobevisangue this was a so so movie, not spielberg's best and it makes me wonder just how different this movie would have been had kubrick lived to complete it.
@giulianobevisangue Those 'aliens' are enhanced technology. They're not flesh and blood, which is why they reverence David and want the best for him. I thought the ending was by far the best part of the film.
@giulianobevisangue I really dont think those where aliens you are refering to. I thought they where aliens when I first watched it but I think they really are robots that were made in the future. I think they made them look like aliens or non human like because after a while they decided to stop making robots that look like humans. Maybe to avoid getting them confused with people like they did with david or to keep them seperated from humans. Who knows why, that is a completely different story.
@giulianobevisangue I actually happen to like the ending they decided to go with. Your right they was going to just go with the underwater ending. It could have ended either way. But I felt like the ending they went with had more closer and honestly I am so glad they went with that ending. It was sort of closer for david as well, He now knows his mom is dead because 2,000 yrs have passed and she told him she will only live about 50 more yrs. So that gave him a reason to stop looking.
@giulianobevisangue for the Blue fairy. And it explains the reason cutting Monica's hair scene. I also think it was needed, because joe was trying to tell him that humans were so bad and they didn't really love him they just love the things he do for them. Also at the very begining of the movie, the business lady said something about if we can get a robot to love a human, will that human love it back. If it ended with the underwater seen that question isn't really anwsered for certain.
@giulianobevisangue But with the last seen, Monica said that she always loved him. That proved Joe wrong and answer the question that a human can actually love a robot.
Amo muito esse filme !!! Uma verdadeira obra de arte !! Eu amo quando o Joe fala: "When the end comes, all that will be left is us. That's why they hate us "
OMG when I first watched this movie I cried the whole night through and nobody could calm me down...still such an unique masterpiece with important questions concerning the future...
and a great soundtrack, I mean it's John Williams, duh! he's a genius.
i was watching this movie with my girlfriend and when the scene where the mother holds david and speaks those words so that david will love her forever and only her. my girlfriend looks at me, holds my neck, and starts saying those same words. it was funny.
R1COs hit the nail on the head, this film was largely critically ignored and slated on release, prats like barry norman sneered at it. They all singularly failed to decode the message inside the film, one of the futility of the human condition, that we are incapable of recognizing our strengths as a species while playing to our weaknesses. We are in the gutter looking up at the stars when we should be sailing amongst them. This film bears testimony to the genius of Kubric the humanist.
... a machine must tell a story of a man´s heart, of a man´s soul and man´s feelings, because mankind didn´t knew to recognize its own true nature and to respect and charish it... sad
Why from 2:50 ? Le début est tout simplement une des plus belles musique de film. Après 2:50 c'est de la musique d'ambiance pour film. Mais la mélodie : une des berceuses les plus aimantes qu'il y ait eu dans un film
What made this movie even more sad was the idea of his real mom (not the mom which is played out by the meccas at the end) not knowing how much David really loved her and did all of that for her, waiting for his mother for years.
a robot looking for love from his programmed mummy! And shows love like a true love is ment to be. forever & timeless, selfish-less & painful (hurts inside) so sad and so tearful.
a score is usually shaped by the film's story, so I'd agree there's an influence.
It's interesting that you say you took it to portray a search, because I took it to be David's unyielding hope, the purity of his love. but that's the beauty of music; it can have so many different layers and meanings.
@Vanze42 John Williams just understands how to compose the perfect score for any movie, no matter if it's a war drama like "Saving Private Ryan", the cruel and tragic circumstances that made "Schindler's List" such a great theme or "E.T.", when the boys took off into the sky on their bikes. Williams is a veteran in this business - a truly gifted one - composing scores for movies since 1959.

the score blows away the movie. It wasn't a terrible film by any means but I personally would put it at the top of the list of the weaker Splbg efforts. It's sappy, dumb and just doesn't work. Often I feel people confuse the power of a score too much with the film itself
You´re right often people confuse the power of a score with the movie itself, but this isn´t the case, the story written by the genius of cinema one of the best directors of all time stanley kubrik is one thing, but in therms of the quality of the direction and all the others aspects of the film, AI is definitly a masterpiece and one of the best movies of spielberg it is just much more subtil then the others.
