Yeah, Abebooks rocks. You can sometimes find Objectivist material from the Ayn Rand bookstore on ebay. It helps to subscribe to the corresponding RSS feed, so you get notified automatically and don't have to check manually.
I would also recommend using AbeBooks, but sometimes it is worthwhile to, after locating a particular book, go to the seller's own website. Sometimes they offer cheaper prices - say a dollar less than you would have to pay on AbeBooks. Obviously depends on the seller (I use thriftbooks a lot), but it's worth checking.
One nice thing about a college student is the access to such a big library. Of course Cropper is right, most of the books are tripe, but if I'm looking for something specific the school usually has it.
I always prefer to get books from the library and read them through first before thinking of buying it. There are very few books that I've bought that I still read once in awhile, though and it's very rare that I'll buy a book brand new. It has to have good subject matter or be scientific in some way that I would be interested in reading more than once. Most of the books I own just sit on the shelf and haven't been opened in about two years or more.
My advice about buying books: Buy as many books as you like, and spend as much as you want to for them. BUT---IF YOU BUY A BOOK, ALWAYS READ IT BEFORE BUYING ANOTHER ONE!!! If you don't do this all that will happen is that you will eventually have a whole roomful of books, and you'll feel like a loser because you know you should have read them but didnt....

You clearly do NOT speak from experience. My favorite pastime is buying books that I have no plan to read. I consequently have hundreds and hundreds of books I've never read. But...
When I want to research the Knights Templar, or Alexander the Great, or recessions in U.S. history, I have 5 or 10 books within reach.
Saying "read one before buying another" is an excuse to not buy books. What are libraries for?!?
Definitly true, I sooo do not have time to even browse though a 3 dollar psychothearpies books.I leave for work in 10... minutes...anyway internet is good for books, but for those lovely spontanous buying moments used book store. No shipping cost. Also alot of those books are like a dollar or less (my 3$ psychothearpy book was in the expensive section :-P). And library sales are GREAT!!!! I also had old school that discarded a ton of books, I got about 50 of those.
**Forgot to mention I'll probably be moving to Canada on a working visa for 1-2 years in a year or so.. perhaps that'll be my reading holiday! I'll be able to order books from the U.S. much quicker :)
My brother and I went to B&N recently because he wanted to find some good history books. It was a disaster because just about every book we looked at had explicit socialist tripe in its description. For the ones that didn't have that we weren't at all confident of its quality.
So yeah, I definitely wouldn't buy new unless it is recommended by someone else or you've researched it a bit.

That Greek food you mentioned is pronounced "year-oh".
And yes, the Greeks mastered food as well. What they make is truly delicious qua delicious.

There are so many old books out there you can actually get for a penny (unfortunately though plus 3$ shipping of course).

You buy books that you don't plan to read?
This explains quite a bit about you.
It's like buying water that you don't plan to drink.

"It's like buying water that you don't plan to drink."
No, it's like buying water which you would only drink in an emergency.

Thanks for answering my question.
I've got a big cart of stuff from amazon, all new, if I choose each of the books used copies, I'd have to deal with many vendors other than Amazon :(
I'm pretty sure on that anyway..
As for the library I'll have to ask at the library what happens to their aging books.
I liked your response to the Turkish remix of Mozart.
