In Japan she is called both Hatsune and Hatune.

In Japanese the pronunciation of the Kanji is closer to Hatune, so when it is romanized into the English alphabet they spell it how it sounds :)

Explanation: Those are used for input devices, like microphones.

If you look carefully at the original art of Miku, all of the close-ups you see here are on her, including the MIDI-plugs. I never realized that Miku was so detailed.

But good eye for noticing. ;)

@Caspercom Yeah. There's tons of musical aspects to the vocaloids design, for example, Gakupo Let's see.... His sword has computer keys on it, the blade is a spectrogram, his shoulder pad appears to look like a syntesizer of some sort, and the gem on his chest looks like one of the visualizations in a media player.
